Article Synopsis
  • The NIH-funded Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers (CEGIR) formed a diversity committee to combat systemic racism and implicit bias in the care and research of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs).
  • The committee established mission statements, integrated diversity discussions into meetings, and launched educational initiatives, such as a speaker series and a publication library.
  • Their research agenda aims to address demographic understanding, reduce bias in literature, investigate health disparities, and create a framework for ongoing projects to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in EGID research and care.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the sociocultural factors in the Black community that contribute to a delay in identification of Black children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Methods: Four focus groups with parents of typically developing children were conducted at 2 Black Churches using a community-partnered participatory research approach and the socioecological model. Participants completed sociodemographic surveys, viewed CDC Autism Training Videos of Black children with ASD, and reported on their behavioral observations.

Objective: Extremely preterm (EP) impairment rates are likely underestimated using the Bayley III norm-based thresholds scores and may be better assessed relative to concurrent healthy term reference (TR) infants born in the same hospital.

Study Design: Blinded, certified examiners in the Neonatal Research Network (NRN) evaluated EP survivors and a sample of healthy TR infants recruited near the 2-year assessment age.

Results: We assessed 1452 EP infants and 183 TR infants.

The Many Hosts of Mycobacteria 9 (MHM9): A conference report.

Tuberculosis (Edinb)

September 2023

Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA; Infectious Diseases Institute, The Ohio State University, OH, USA. Electronic address:

The Many Hosts of Mycobacteria (MHM) meeting series brings together basic scientists, clinicians and veterinarians to promote robust discussion and dissemination of recent advances in our knowledge of numerous mycobacterial diseases, including human and bovine tuberculosis (TB), nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection, Hansen's disease (leprosy), Buruli ulcer and Johne's disease. The 9th MHM conference (MHM9) was held in July 2022 at The Ohio State University (OSU) and centered around the theme of "Confounders of Mycobacterial Disease." Confounders can and often do drive the transmission of mycobacterial diseases, as well as impact surveillance and treatment outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • High-grade gliomas (HGG) in young children are complex and have unpredictable outcomes, necessitating further study beyond retrospective analyses.
  • A study conducted at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital analyzed a cohort of children with histologically confirmed HGG using advanced genomic profiling and imaging, leading to insights into four distinct tumor categories.
  • The findings revealed that infant-type hemispheric gliomas (IHG) are the most common, especially in very young children, with significantly better survival rates compared to other types of HGG, suggesting a need for tailored therapeutic approaches.

Impact of Telemedicine on Delivery of Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care.

J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr

October 2023

From the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, OH.

Objectives: Outpatient inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care shifted from office visits (OVs) to a model with integrated telemedicine during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. We describe the impact of this shift on delivery of pediatric IBD care.

Methods: We collected electronic medical record data from office and telemedicine visits for pediatric patients with IBD at a single center from April 2019 to December 2020.

Electronic address:

Loss of oral tolerance (LOT) to gluten, driven by dendritic cell (DC) priming of gluten-specific T helper 1 (Th1) cell immune responses, is a hallmark of celiac disease (CeD) and can be triggered by enteric viral infections. Whether certain commensals can moderate virus-mediated LOT remains elusive. Here, using a mouse model of virus-mediated LOT, we discovered that the gut-colonizing protist Tritrichomonas (T.

The Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP) aims to create a multi-scale spatial atlas of the healthy human body at single-cell resolution by applying advanced technologies and disseminating resources to the community. As the HuBMAP moves past its first phase, creating ontologies, protocols and pipelines, this Perspective introduces the production phase: the generation of reference spatial maps of functional tissue units across many organs from diverse populations and the creation of mapping tools and infrastructure to advance biomedical research.

Blood vessels in different vascular beds vary in lumen diameter, which is essential for their function and fluid flow along the vascular network. Molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of a vascular lumen of appropriate size, or tubulogenesis, are still only partially understood. protein was previously identified in a screen for proteins that interact with Abelson (Abl)-kinase.

KPTN-related disorder is an autosomal recessive disorder associated with germline variants in KPTN (previously known as kaptin), a component of the mTOR regulatory complex KICSTOR. To gain further insights into the pathogenesis of KPTN-related disorder, we analysed mouse knockout and human stem cell KPTN loss-of-function models. Kptn -/- mice display many of the key KPTN-related disorder phenotypes, including brain overgrowth, behavioural abnormalities, and cognitive deficits.

Purpose: Although biopsy is contraindicated in retinoblastoma (RB), the aqueous humor (AH) is a robust liquid biopsy source of molecular tumor information, facilitating biomarker discovery. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), promising biomarker candidates across multiple cancers, were recently identified in RB AH, but relationships between sEVs and RB clinical features are unknown.

Methods: We analyzed sEVs in 37 AH samples from 18 RB eyes of varying International Intraocular Retinoblastoma Classification (IIRC) groups and explored clinical correlations.

Background: Pregnancy is known to induce extensive biological changes in the healthy mother. Little is known, however, about what these changes are at the molecular level. We have examined systemic expression changes in protein-coding genes and long non-coding (lnc) RNAs during and after pregnancy, compared to before pregnancy, among healthy women with term pregnancies.
