Department of Internal Medicine, Institute for Digestive Research, Digestive Disease Center, Soonchunhyang University College of Medicine, 59 Daesagwan-Ro, Yongsan-Gu, Seoul, 04401, Republic of Korea.

Background: There is a lack of national-level research on alcohol consumption and the epidemiology of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in South Korea. This study aims to address the critical public health issue of ALD by focusing on its trends, incidence, and outcomes, using nationwide claims data.

Methods: Utilizing National Health Insurance Service data from 2011 to 2017, we calculated the population's overall drinking amount and the incidence of ALD based on ICD-10 diagnosis codes.

: The analgesia/nociception index (ANI) potentially monitors nociceptive status during anesthesia, but its link to preoperative pain sensitivity is unclear. We investigated the relationship between pre-anesthetic ANI scores and propofol injection pain (PIP) in patients receiving remifentanil. : This study included 124 male patients aged 19-60 undergoing general anesthesia (ASA class I or II).

: The effects of midazolam, a benzodiazepine, on pain perception are complex on both spinal and supraspinal levels. It is not yet known whether remimazolam clinically attenuates or worsens pain. The present study investigated the effect of intraoperative remimazolam on opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) in patients undergoing general anesthesia.

Introduction: Poststroke complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is an important complication in stroke survivors. The identification of factors associated with post-stroke CRPS is important for preventive measures and early diagnosis.

Methods: A total of 141 first-ever stroke survivors in the subacute stage were retrospectively analyzed.

Background and Objectives: Different types of anesthetics affect thermoregulatory mechanisms, such as the redistribution of body temperature, loss of skin heat, or inhibition of thermoregulatory vasoconstriction. Therefore, we compared remimazolam with propofol in terms of core body temperature in patients undergoing robotic-assisted and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Materials and methods: Ninety patients were randomly assigned to either the propofol−remifentanil (PR) group or the remimazolam−remifentanil (RR) group.

Article Synopsis
  • Effective COVID-19 containment measures, including physical distancing and hygiene practices, remain crucial despite the availability of vaccines, with varying compliance levels across Asian countries influenced by awareness and motivation in the early pandemic phase.
  • The study aimed to analyze how knowledge and attitudes correlate with compliance to these measures in 14 regions through electronic surveys from May to June 2020.
  • Results showed that Southeast Asian participants were more likely to commit to physical distancing, with independent factors for high compliance including safe distancing practices, mask-wearing, preferred news sources, and psychological well-being.

Changes in plasma sclerostin level associated with use of a medium cut-off dialyzer in end-stage renal disease.

Kidney Res Clin Pract

March 2021

Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, Wonkwang University Hospital, Wonkwang University School of Medicine Hospital, Iksan, Republic of Korea.

Background: Larger middle molecules are important substances associated with cardiovascular complications in end- stage renal disease. Unfortunately, larger middle molecules are not reliably removed by a high-flux dialyzer. A medium cut-off (MCO) membrane could effectively remove larger middle molecules.

Background: Hip avulsion fractures occur mostly during adolescence when actions such as kicking or running cause forceful contraction of attached muscle. Osteochondroma is benign tumor that mostly occurs at the metaphysis of a long bone, being usually asymptomatic.

Case Summary: A 15-year-old patient experienced feeling and sound of a break while kicking a ball in soccer game three years prior to his visit to our hospital.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has reached global pandemic status as announced by the World Health Organization, which currently recommends reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as the standard diagnostic tool. However, although the RT-PCR test results may be found negative, there are cases that are found positive for COVID-19 pneumonia on computed tomography (CT) scan. CT is also useful in assessing the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia.

Intrathoracic omental herniation (ITOH) is the herniation of the omentum through the esophageal hiatus without herniation of the stomach. It is a rare disease and serious complications due to ITOH have not been reported in the literature. Here, we reported the case of 47-year old man who presented to the emergency department with dyspnea and chest pain.

Hand osteoarthritis reduces a person's ability to perform work activities and return to their occupation. We investigated the effects of a finger exercise program on hand grip strength, pain, physical function, and stiffness in automobile manufacturing workers with hand osteoarthritis. This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 29 subjects.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of diaphragm and deep abdominal muscle exercise (DDAME) on walking ability (WA) and balance ability (BA) in subjects with hemiplegia due to stroke. Study subjects consisted of twenty patients diagnosed with hemiplegia due to stroke. They were randomized into a control group (CG) (n=10) that performed traditional exercise and an experimental group (EG) (n=10) that performed DDAME.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate predictors of crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD), and the effects of CCD on functional outcomes including motor function, activities of daily living, cognitive function, and ambulation 6 months after onset in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).

Methods: A total of 74 patients experiencing their first ICH were recruited. If the asymmetric index was more than 10% using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), a diagnosis of CCD was confirmed.

Rhythmic arm swing integrated into treadmill training in patients with chronic stroke: A single-subject experimental study.

Physiother Theory Pract

August 2018

c Applied Kinesiology and Ergonomic Technology Laboratory, Department of Physical Therapy , Graduate School, Yonsei University, Wonju , Kangwon-do , Republic of Korea.

Normal walking includes coordinated and controlled movement of the legs and arms. However, patients following stroke often present with inappropriate motor control which limits coordinated movement patterns of the affected limbs. This study aimed to compare the effects of rhythmic arm swing and arm fixation during treadmill walking in patients with poststroke hemiparesis.

Diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) poses certain unique challenges beyond the scope of current guidelines. The regional heterogeneity of HCC in demographic characteristics, prevalence, surveillance, and socioeconomic status necessitates different treatment approaches, leading to variations in survival outcomes. Considering the medical practices in Korea, the Korean Society of Abdominal Radiology (KSAR) study group for liver diseases has developed expert consensus recommendations for diagnosis of HCC by gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI with updated perspectives, using a modified Delphi method.

Identification of cromolyn sodium as an anti-fibrotic agent targeting both hepatocytes and hepatic stellate cells.

Wonkwang Institute of Integrative Biomedical Science and Dental Research Institute, School of Dentistry, Wonkwang University, Iksan, Chonbuk 570-711, Republic of Korea; Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology, Seoul National University, Suwon, Gyeonggi-do 443-270, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, the late stage of fibrosis, are threatening diseases that lead to liver failure and patient death. Although aberrantly activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the main cause of disease initiation, the symptoms are primarily related to damaged hepatocytes. Thus, damaged hepatocytes, as well as HSCs, need to be simultaneously considered as therapeutic targets to develop more efficient treatments.
