Article Synopsis
  • The systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare treatment outcomes of shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) and ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL) for ureteral stones based on size.
  • A total of 18 eligible studies were selected from over 1300 initial articles, with findings showing that URSL had significantly higher stone-free rates (SFR) than SWL in both randomized control trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs.
  • Although URSL demonstrated better effectiveness and a lower retreatment rate, the authors noted the need for more randomized trials to draw definitive conclusions.

December 2021

Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effects of different ICU staffing models on patient outcomes, specifically comparing a closed unit model to a mandatory critical care consultation model.
  • Data collected included patient demographics, ICU length of stay, and incidences of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) among 1,526 patients before and after the staffing model change in September 2017.
  • Results indicated that the closed unit model led to lower ICU mortality rates, reduced length of stay in the ICU, and fewer complications such as VAP compared to the consultation model.

Background: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), a common spinal disorder that negatively affects quality of life, is a disabling condition accompanied by back pain, leg pain, and claudication. Lumbar foraminal stenosis (LFS) is often accompanied by lumbar central stenosis (LCS) and conservative treatment is often ineffective. A surgical approach, including a minimally invasive technique, is usually recommended for the conservative treatment of refractory conditions.

Objective: Among the pediatric population with minor head trauma, it is difficult to determine an indication for the usage of brain computerized tomography (CT). Our study aims to compare the efficiency of the most commonly used clinical decision rules: the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) and Canadian Assessment of Tomography for Childhood Head Injury 2 (CATCH2).

Methods: This retrospective study investigated whether the PECARN and CATCH2 rules were applicable to Korean children with minor head trauma for reducing the use of brain CT imaging, while detecting intracranial pathology.

The incidence of strokes in individuals in their 30-40 s-who have responsibilities towards their families-has increased. Additionally, many stroke patients suffer from post-stroke disabilities and require rehabilitation. However, especially in younger stroke patients, factors such as financial burden and the inability to be productive lead to depression and thereby, the lack of rehabilitation motivation-which affects their therapeutic outcomes.

Background And Purpose: We aimed to develop a model predicting early recanalization after intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) treatment in large-vessel occlusion.

Methods: Using data from two different multicenter prospective cohorts, we determined the factors associated with early recanalization immediately after t-PA in stroke patients with large-vessel occlusion, and developed and validated a prediction model for early recanalization. Clot volume was semiautomatically measured on thin-section computed tomography using software, and the degree of collaterals was determined using the Tan score.
