A comprehensive scoping review on machine learning-based fetal echocardiography analysis.

Fetal echocardiography (ultrasound of the fetal heart) plays a vital role in identifying heart defects, allowing clinicians to establish prenatal and postnatal management plans. Machine learning-based methods are emerging to support the automation of fetal echocardiographic analysis; this review presents the findings from a literature review in this area. Searches were queried at leading indexing platforms ACM, IEEE Xplore, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, including papers published until July 2023.

Associations Between the Neural Stress Response and Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression.

Anxiety and depression disorders show high prevalence rates, and stress is a significant risk factor for both. However, studies investigating the interplay between anxiety, depression, and stress regulation in the brain are scarce. The present manuscript included 124 law students from the LawSTRESS project.

Patient perspective: Is intensive screening of women at high risk of breast cancer evidence-based medicine or ?

In 2023, a breast cancer risk assessment and a subsequent positive test for the BRCA-2 genetic mutation brought me to the uncomfortable intersection of a longstanding career as an advocate for high-quality medical evidence to support shared patient-provider decision making and a new role as a high-risk patient. My search for studies of available risk-management options revealed that the most commonly recommended approach for women with a ⩾20% lifetime breast cancer risk, intensive screening including annual mammography and/or magnetic resonance imaging beginning at age 25-40 years, was supported only by cancer-detection statistics, with almost no evidence on patient-centered outcomes-mortality, physical and psychological morbidity, or quality of life-compared with standard screening or a surgical alternative, bilateral risk-reducing mastectomy. In this commentary, I explore parallels between the use of the intensive screening protocol and another longstanding women's health recommendation based on limited evidence, the use of hormone therapy (HT) for postmenopausal chronic disease prevention, which was sharply curtailed after the publication of the groundbreaking Women's Health Initiative trial in 2002.

Minimal change disease in treatment-naïve hepatitis C virus infection: A case report and literature review.

Minimal change disease (MCD) accounts for 10 - 15% of idiopathic nephrotic syndromes in adults. Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is rarely ascribed as a cause of MCD and was previously associated with interferon-based therapy. Accessory ribs are rare anatomical variations, typically cervical or lumbar, with intrathoracic accessory ribs being particularly uncommon. These anomalies are often asymptomatic but can cause issues like thoracic outlet syndrome. This case report describes a 36-year-old woman who was incidentally found to have an intrathoracic accessory rib on a chest X-ray.

Multi-omics characterization of improved cognitive functions in Parkinson's disease patients after the combined metabolic activator treatment: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled phase II trial.

Parkinson's disease is primarily marked by mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic abnormalities. We recently reported that the combined metabolic activators improved the immunohistochemical parameters and behavioural functions in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease animal models and the cognitive functions in Alzheimer's disease patients. These metabolic activators serve as the precursors of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and glutathione, and they can be used to activate mitochondrial metabolism and eventually treat mitochondrial dysfunction.

Spontaneous cervical swelling syndrome is a rare, benign, and recurrent condition, most commonly affecting middle-aged women. Although its etiology is not fully understood, it is thought to be associated with intermittent occlusion of the thoracic duct, caused by increased pressure in the head and neck region. It occurs as an acute, limited swelling of the left supra-clavicular region and regresses, in most cases, spontaneously, in less than a week.

Objective: Globally, one in four pregnant women is classified as overweight or obese, based on their prepregnancy body mass index (BMI). Obese pregnant women are at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term cardiovascular disease that occurs earlier in life.
