Background: Increasing the temperature of intrathecal local anesthetics has been shown to increase the speed of onset and block height of spinal anesthesia. However, how this influences dose requirement has not been fully quantified. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the effective dose for anesthesia for cesarean delivery in 50% of patients (ED 50 ) of intrathecal bupivacaine given at temperatures of 37 °C (body temperature) or 24 °C (room temperature).

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a widely spread DNA virus that is ubiquitous and persistent with primary infection occurring in early childhood, with reactivation of the infection a common phenomenon in severely immunocompromised hosts, including hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients, influencing morbidity and mortality. A wide spectrum of clinical presentations is reported in the literature with HHV-6 reactivation including post-transplant limbic encephalitis (PALE). We report the unusual case of a 6-year-old female 107 days postallogenic HSCT due to transfusion dependent beta thalassemia major who developed acute cerebellitis with secondary supratentorial hydrocephalus that required invasive surgical intervention.

Background: Dysregulation in histone acetylation, a significant epigenetic alteration closely associated with major pathologies including cancer, promotes tumorigenesis, inactivating tumor-suppressor genes and activating oncogenic pathways. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a cellular energy sensor that regulates a multitude of biological processes. Although a number of studies have identified the mechanisms by which AMPK regulates cancer growth, the underlying epigenetic mechanisms remain unknown.

The properties of absorbable scaffold harvested with human amniotic fluid stem cells on rat model: an innovation for pelvic reconstruction surgery.

Sci Rep

June 2024

Division of Urogynecology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Linkou, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou Medical Center, 5, Fu-Hsin Street, Kwei-shan, 333, Taoyuan, Taiwan.

The current practice of restoring the anatomical structure in the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction includes implantation of synthetic sling, which carries potential complications. This study aimed to develop biological substitutes to improve tissue function using scaffolds as a support to the host cells, through formation of new tissue. Human amniotic fluid stem cells (hAFSCs) were seeded on synthetic mesh-scaffold of AlloDerm Regenerative Tissue Matrix (RTM), Poly-DL-lactico-glycolic acid (PLGA) mesh (VICRYL) and Polydioxanone (PDS) meshes.

Article Synopsis
  • Ventricular septal defects (VSD) with outflow tract malalignment are common congenital heart issues that vary in severity, making their development hard to comprehend due to the complexity of heart formation.
  • Recent imaging advancements like high-resolution episcopic microscopy have shed light on the normal processes of heart chamber septation and outflow tract alignment.
  • Our study using lightsheet microscopy identified endocardial cushion hypoplasia and insufficient outflow tract rotation as key factors in the development of VSD, potentially improving understanding and treatment of congenital heart diseases.

The most encountered anomalous systemic venous drainage is a persistent left superior vena cava that drains into the right atrium through the coronary sinus. A much rarer anomalous systemic venous drainage is that of isolated anomalous drainage of a normally positioned right superior vena cava (RSVC) into the left atrium (LA). This has been reported in approximately 20 patients, with the diagnosis usually made by cardiac catheterization.

Introduction: Accelerated senescence of trophoblast may cause several diverse pregnancy outcomes; however, the cause of accelerated trophoblast senescence remains unclear. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is closely related to organ senescence. Therefore, in the present study, we hypothesized that angiotensin (Ang)II, one of the most important RAS family members, accelerates trophoblast senescence through the transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF-β1) pathway.
