Background: Increasing the temperature of intrathecal local anesthetics has been shown to increase the speed of onset and block height of spinal anesthesia. However, how this influences dose requirement has not been fully quantified. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the effective dose for anesthesia for cesarean delivery in 50% of patients (ED 50 ) of intrathecal bupivacaine given at temperatures of 37 °C (body temperature) or 24 °C (room temperature).

Background: As birth policy can affect maternal and infant health, we sought to identify whether and how the introduction of the two-child policy might have affected the prevalence of placenta previa in pregnant women in mainland China.
Methods: In this update meta-analysis and systematic review, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Weipu, Wanfang, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases for studies evaluating the prevalence of placenta previa in China published between the inception of each database and March 2024, with no restrictions. Two investigators independently extracted the data from each included study.

Aims: Endometriosis is characterized by an abnormal immune microenvironment. Despite the extensive use of immune therapies, the application of immune checkpoint inhibitors in endometriosis lacks confidence due to the instability of preclinical research data. This study aims to elucidate the regulation of the immune inhibitory checkpoint VISTA and its effects on T cells from the perspective of microbiota and metabolism.

Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common surgical procedures in the pediatric population. While a rare complication, bladder injury can impose a significant burden on patients. This study outlined a case of bladder injury following selective inguinal hernia repair and summarized methods to prevent this complication, aiming to emphasize the importance of not underestimating interventions labeled as "routine surgery" in order to avoid avoidable harm to patients.

Preventing the recurrence of melanoma after surgery and accelerating wound healing are among the most challenging aspects of melanoma management. Photothermal therapy has been widely used to treat tumors and bacterial infections and promote wound healing. Owing to its efficacy and specificity, it may be used for postoperative management of tumors.

Objective: Previous observational studies have identified a correlation between elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to determine whether a causal relationship exists between Hcy and PCOS at the genetic level.
Methods: A two-sample Mendelian Randomization (TSMR) study was implemented to assess the genetic impact of plasma levels of Hcy, folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 on PCOS in individuals of European ancestry.

Introduction: Understanding the mechanisms underlying maternal postpartum depression (PPD) and its effects on offspring development is crucial. However, research on the association between maternal PPD, gut microbiota, and offspring neurodevelopment remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association of maternal PPD symptoms with early gut microbiome, gut metabolome, and neurodevelopment in infants at 6 months.

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a widely spread DNA virus that is ubiquitous and persistent with primary infection occurring in early childhood, with reactivation of the infection a common phenomenon in severely immunocompromised hosts, including hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients, influencing morbidity and mortality. A wide spectrum of clinical presentations is reported in the literature with HHV-6 reactivation including post-transplant limbic encephalitis (PALE). We report the unusual case of a 6-year-old female 107 days postallogenic HSCT due to transfusion dependent beta thalassemia major who developed acute cerebellitis with secondary supratentorial hydrocephalus that required invasive surgical intervention.

Background: Dysregulation in histone acetylation, a significant epigenetic alteration closely associated with major pathologies including cancer, promotes tumorigenesis, inactivating tumor-suppressor genes and activating oncogenic pathways. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a cellular energy sensor that regulates a multitude of biological processes. Although a number of studies have identified the mechanisms by which AMPK regulates cancer growth, the underlying epigenetic mechanisms remain unknown.

The current practice of restoring the anatomical structure in the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction includes implantation of synthetic sling, which carries potential complications. This study aimed to develop biological substitutes to improve tissue function using scaffolds as a support to the host cells, through formation of new tissue. Human amniotic fluid stem cells (hAFSCs) were seeded on synthetic mesh-scaffold of AlloDerm Regenerative Tissue Matrix (RTM), Poly-DL-lactico-glycolic acid (PLGA) mesh (VICRYL) and Polydioxanone (PDS) meshes.

The most encountered anomalous systemic venous drainage is a persistent left superior vena cava that drains into the right atrium through the coronary sinus. A much rarer anomalous systemic venous drainage is that of isolated anomalous drainage of a normally positioned right superior vena cava (RSVC) into the left atrium (LA). This has been reported in approximately 20 patients, with the diagnosis usually made by cardiac catheterization.

Target cancer therapy has been developed for clinical cancer treatment based on the discovery of CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat) -Cas system. This forefront and cutting-edge scientific technique improves the cancer research into molecular level and is currently widely utilized in genetic investigation and clinical precision cancer therapy. In this review, we summarized the genetic modification by CRISPR/Cas and CRISPR screening system, discussed key components for successful CRISPR screening, including Cas enzymes, guide RNA (gRNA) libraries, target cells or organs.

Purpose: Epidural analgesia has emerged as a commonly used method for relieving labor pain. However, epidural-related maternal fever (ERMF) is characterized by a high occurrence rate and can have detrimental consequences for the well-being of both the mother and the fetus. This study aimed to investigate the functional role and underlying mechanism of dexmedetomidine (DEX) in ERMF.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory disorders affecting the digestive tract, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ruscogenin, a prominent steroidal sapogenin present in radix ophiopogon japonicus, has shown a protective effect on attenuating the inflammatory response associated with inflammatory diseases, but the efficacy of ruscogenin in IBD remains unclear. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of ruscogenin on intestinal barrier dysfunction and inflammatory responses as well as the underlying mechanism in ulcerative colitis.

Introduction: Accelerated senescence of trophoblast may cause several diverse pregnancy outcomes; however, the cause of accelerated trophoblast senescence remains unclear. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is closely related to organ senescence. Therefore, in the present study, we hypothesized that angiotensin (Ang)II, one of the most important RAS family members, accelerates trophoblast senescence through the transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF-β1) pathway.

Background: Although the benefits of antiviral therapy for hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have been proven, researchers have not confirmed the differences in patient outcomes between patients who received preoperative antiviral therapy for a period of time (at least 24 wk) and patients who received remedial antiviral therapy just before radical resection for HBV-related HCC.
Aim: To investigate the efficacy of perioperative remedial antiviral therapy in patients with HBV-related HCC.
Methods: A retrospective study of patients who underwent radical resection for HBV-related HCC at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from January 2016 to June 2019 was conducted.

Despite its prevalence, preeclampsia (PE) remains unclear as to its etiology. Here, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms regulating differences in the gene expression of zinc-finger protein 516 (ZNF516) in the placenta. The expression of the placental ZNF516 gene and its association with critical clinical markers were verified, and a rigorous correlation analysis was conducted.
