Glucose is a major energy substrate for cellular life activities, and its metabolic pathways include glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway, and the polyol pathway. Here, we review the glucose uptake pathways, metabolic characteristics, glucose transport, glucose metabolism-related enzymes, and biological importance in mammalian oocyte maturation, early embryo development, and embryonic stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Moreover, the interrelationships among glucose metabolism, female reproduction-related diseases and assisted reproductive technologies are focused.

Gingerenone A induces ferroptosis in colorectal cancer via targeting suppression of SLC7A11 signaling pathway.

Biomed Pharmacother

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510006, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a widespread and severe disease with few effective treatments, prompting research into Gingerenone A (GA), a ginger-derived compound known for its anti-tumor effects but whose impact on CRC is not fully understood.
  • * Experimental methods included assays to evaluate cell viability, migration, invasion, and biochemical analyses to explore GA's effects on proteins related to ferroptosis, confirming its mechanism of action through various lab techniques.
  • * Results demonstrated that GA significantly inhibited CRC cell growth and movement, and its anticancer effects relied on inducing ferroptosis by degrading the SLC7A11 protein, suggesting that targeting SLC7A11 could enhance GA's therapeutic profile against CRC.*

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to determine how the sex of the carrier affects embryo outcomes and pregnancies in couples participating in preimplantation genetic testing for structural rearrangements (PGT-SR).
  • - In a retrospective analysis of 412 couples, results showed that male carriers had a higher rate of genetically transferable blastocysts compared to female carriers (34.0% vs 31.7%), primarily due to different segregation patterns in the Robertsonian translocation subgroup.
  • - The findings suggest that while the sex of the carrier impacts embryo transfer rates, other pregnancy outcomes remained similar, and the differences were mainly observed in the RobT subgroup, with minor variations noted in the RecT subgroup.

Machine-learning diagnostic models for ovarian tumors.

Heliyon

October 2024

Department of Gynecology, Guangdong Women and Children Hospital, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A diagnostic framework was developed using machine learning to improve clinical behavior and prognosis for ovarian cancer based on multiple biomarkers from patient data.
  • Four machine learning classifiers (Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, k-nearest neighbor, and logistic regression) analyzed data from 713 ovarian tumor patients to identify which models provided the most accurate predictions for malignancy.
  • The Random Forest method yielded the highest accuracy (99.82%) for distinguishing malignant tumors, while also demonstrating strong external validation, indicating that machine learning can enhance pre-treatment diagnosis and prognosis of ovarian cancer.

ZFHX2-AS1 interacts with DKC1 to regulate ARHGAP5 pseudouridylation and suppress ovarian cancer progression.

Cell Signal

December 2024

The Key Laboratory of Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, Institute for Chemical Carcinogenesis, School of Public Health, Guangzhou Medical University, 1 Xinzao Road, Panyu District, Guangzhou 511436, China. Electronic address:

Ovarian cancer (OCa) remains a highly lethal disease, largely due to late-stage diagnosis and limited treatment options for recurrent metastatic tumors. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been recognized as key regulators of cancer hallmarks, yet their specific roles in driving OCa progression are not fully understood. In this study, we employed an integrated approach combining clinical correlation, functional assays, and mechanistic investigations to reveal that lncRNA ZFHX2-AS1 is significantly downregulated in OCa tissues and cells, with its reduced expression associated with poor clinical outcomes.

DCAF13 promotes ovarian cancer progression by activating FRAS1-mediated FAK signaling pathway.

Cell Mol Life Sci

October 2024

Department of Cell Biology, College of Medicine, Jiaxing University, 118 Jiahang Road, Jiaxing, 314001, P. R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • Cullin-RING ubiquitin ligase 4 (CRL4) is linked to ovarian cancer development, with the protein DCAF13 playing a crucial role in this process.
  • High levels of DCAF13 are associated with poor survival rates in ovarian cancer patients, and knocking it out significantly reduces cancer cell growth and movement.
  • The study reveals that DCAF13 promotes tumor growth by targeting FRAS1 for degradation, which in turn activates the FAK signaling pathway, suggesting potential therapeutic targets for ovarian cancer treatment.

Introduction: Fat grafting often yields inconsistent and suboptimal results, necessitating improved fat processing techniques. A stromal vascular fraction (SVF) gel created using mechanical emulsification demonstrates superior retention rates to conventional Coleman fat grafts.

Methods: This study investigated the mechanisms at play by transplanting fat aspirates from liposuction patients-either processed as Coleman fat grafts or further refined into an SVF gel via mechanical shear force-onto the backs of nude mice.

November 2024

Department of Abdominal Oncology, Cancer Center of West China Hospital and Institutes for Systems Genetics, Frontiers Science Center for Disease-related Molecular Network, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan 610041, China. Electronic address:

Menopause is an age-related change that persists for around one-third of a woman's life. Menopause increases the risk of metabolic illnesses such as diabetes, osteoporosis (OP), and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Immune mediators (pro-inflammatory cytokines), such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, IL-17, transforming growth factor (TGF), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF), exacerbate the challenges of a woman undergoing menopause by causing inflammation and contributing to the development of these metabolic diseases in postmenopausal women.
