Objective: To investigate the correlation of sperm mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) with routine semen parameters and the effect of MMP on the outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on 727 IVF cycles, including 231 fresh transplantation cycles, in our hospital from November 2018 to October 2019. According to the MMP level determined by JC-1 staining and flow cytometry, we divided the patients into a low MMP (≤52%) and a high MMP (> 52%) group and compared the rates of fertilization, clinical pregnancy, abortion and live birth between the two groups.

Background: In the period immediately after birth, preterm infants are highly susceptible to lung injury. Ventilator-induced lung injury has been recognized as a major contributing factor for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. Noninvasive respiratory support (NIRS) could decrease lung injury, and early respiratory support management might affect pulmonary outcomes.

Effect of early-life exposure to PM on childhood asthma/wheezing: a birth cohort study.

Pediatr Allergy Immunol

June 2022

Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, School of Medicine, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

Background: Although studies have investigated the association between early-life exposure to fine particulate matter (PM ) and childhood asthma/wheezing, results are inconsistent and the susceptible exposure window remains largely unknown.

Methods: A prospective birth cohort study was conducted to recruit pregnant women during their early pregnancy, and to follow up them and their children up to 3-4 years old. Diagnosis of asthma/wheezing was extracted from children's medical records.

In recent years, the development and optimization of biodegradable coronary stents have become the research focus of many medical device manufacturers and scientific research institutions since they can be completely degraded and absorbed, and they restore vascular function. However, there is a lack of in situ quantification of these stents spatially in tissue in vivo. In this study, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT ICR) and time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometric imaging (MSI) were used to analyze the time-dependent distributions of a biodegradable vascular scaffold, which consisted of copolymers of lactic acid and glycolic acid (PLGA) and its degradation products in cross-sections and longitudinal sections of blood vessels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find a way to reduce the negative effects of chemotherapy in children with low-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) while still achieving high cure rates.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 2396 patients in the CCCG-ALL-2015 study, comparing outcomes between those receiving a single dose and those receiving a double dose of daunorubicin during the remission-induction phase.
  • Results showed no significant differences in overall survival or early death rates between the groups, but the double-dose group had better event-free survival and lower relapse risk, indicating the possibility of dosage reduction for specific low-risk patients with positive or hyperdiploid ALL.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has a role in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (S-AKI), so the restoration of normal mitochondrial homeostasis may be an effective treatment strategy. Transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2 p45-related factor 2 (NRF2) is a main regulator of cell-redox homeostasis, and recent studies reported that NRF2 activation helped to preserve mitochondrial morphology and function under conditions of stress. However, the role of NRF2 in the process of S-AKI is still not well understood.

Background: This study sought to examine whether candesartan induces tumor vascular normalization in a narrow therapeutic window to increase perfusion and oxygen content, and thus enhance the effect of radiotherapy (RT).

Methods: Candesartan was administered to tumor-bearing mice to induce the normalization of tumor vessels, and the time window for normalization was determined. Then, tumor vascular density, perfusion, pericyte coverage, hypoxia of tumor-bearing mice was detected at 3, 6, 9, 12 days, respectively.

The P2X4 receptor (P2X4R) can be upregulated after nerve injury, and its mediated spinal microglial activation makes a critical contribution to pathologically enhanced pain processing in the dorsal horn. Although some studies have partly clarified the mechanism underlying altered P2X4R expression, the specific mechanism is not well understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs which control gene expression by binding with their target mRNAs.

The Chemokine Receptor CCR8 Is a Target of Chimeric Antigen T Cells for Treating T Cell Malignancies.

Front Immunol

June 2022

China-New Zealand Joint Laboratory of Biomedine and Health, State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou, China.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have been successfully used in the therapy of B cell leukemia and lymphoma, but still have many challenges in their use for treating T cell malignancies, such as the lack of unique tumor antigens, their limitation of T cell expansion, and the need for third party donors or genome editing. Therefore, we need to find novel targets for CAR T cell therapy to overcome these challenges. Here, we found that both adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) patients and ATLL cells had increased CCR8 expression but did not express CD7.
