Department of Pediatrics, Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, USA; The Alpert Medical School of Brown University, USA; Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry, Brown University, Providence, RI, USA. Electronic address:

Therapeutic hypothermia is the standard of care for hypoxic-ischemic (HI) encephalopathy. Inter-alpha Inhibitor Proteins (IAIPs) attenuate brain injury after HI in neonatal rats. Human (h) IAIPs (60 mg/kg) or placebo (PL) were given 15 min, 24 and 48 h to postnatal (P) day-7 rats after carotid ligation and 8% oxygen for 90 min with (30 °C) and without (36 °C) exposure to hypothermia 1.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study analyzed data from over 22,000 pregnant participants and found that those living in food insecure areas tended to have lower birth weights and higher chances of having small-for-gestational-age babies.
  • * Individual food insecurity did not show a significant association with birth outcomes, suggesting that neighborhood food access may be a more critical factor during pregnancy.

Neonatal Outcomes Are Similar between Patients with Resolved and Those with Persistent Oligohydramnios.

Am J Perinatol

July 2024

Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.

Objective: Oligohydramnios (defined as amniotic fluid volume < 5 cm or deepest vertical pocket < 2 cm) is regarded as an ominous finding on prenatal ultrasound. Amniotic fluid, however, is not static, and to date, there have been no studies comparing perinatal outcomes in patients who are diagnosed with oligohydramnios that resolves and those who have persistent oligohydramnios.

Study Design: This is a secondary analysis of a National Institutes of Health-funded retrospective cohort study of singleton gestations delivered at a tertiary care hospital between 2002 and 2013 with mild hypertensive disorders and/or fetal growth restriction (FGR).

Prior research has identified epigenetic predictors of attention problems in school-aged children but has not yet investigated these in young children, or children at elevated risk of attention problems due to preterm birth. The current study evaluated epigenome-wide associations between neonatal DNA methylation and attention problems at age 2 years in children born very preterm. Participants included 441 children from the Neonatal Neurobehavior and Outcomes in Very Preterm Infants (NOVI) Study, a multi-site study of infants born < 30 weeks gestational age.

Objective: To assess the impact and potential mechanistic pathways of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on longitudinal growth and nutritional status in early childhood.

Study Design: A cohort of 296 mother-infant dyads (32% with PAE vs 68% unexposed) were recruited in Leyte, the Philippines, and followed from early gestation through 24 months of age. PAE was assessed using serum phosphatidylethanol (PEth) captured twice prenatally and in cord blood and supplemented with self-reported alcohol consumption.

Fertility preservation (FP) is the use of a specific medical intervention to protect the fertility of individuals whose disease or disease treatment may lead to infertility. These medical interventions include the cryopreservation of oocytes, embryos, ovarian tissue, sperm, and testicular tissue; oocyte and embryo cryopreservation are the most widely used interventions in the United States. Although guidelines recommend FP prior to undergoing gonadotoxic treatments, cost barriers are high.

Significant ethnic and racial disparities exist in the utilization and outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in the United States. The popularity of fertility preservation (FP) procedures, a specific application of ART for those desiring to delay childbearing, has increased; however, many minority populations have seen a less rapid uptake of these services. Minority patients pursuing ART are more likely to have poorer in vitro fertilization (IVF) and pregnancy outcomes.

Objective: To compare the rates of death or survival with severe neurodevelopmental impairment (sNDI) at 2 years among extremely preterm infants in relation to pre-pregnancy or first-trimester maternal body mass index (BMI).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included extremely preterm infants (gestational age 22-26 weeks). The study was conducted at National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network sites.

Objectives: To study the expression of HER2 in high-grade FIGO3 endometrial endometroid carcinoma (EEC) and to correlate our findings with the clinicopathologic characteristics of this tumor.

Methods: HER2 expression by immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed on 10% formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue on cases diagnosed as FIGO3 EEC. HER2 expression was interpreted as negative (0), low (1+ and 2+) or positive (3+) using similar criteria as in the breast.

Although abnormally fertilized zygotes with three or multiple pronuclei (3 PN/MPN) are commonly believed to be associated with improper maturation of the oocyte cytoplasm in conventional IVF cycles, no studies investigated the association between the proportion of MPN zygotes and the maturation state of the oocyte cohort. We compared the cytoplasmic maturity of oocytes from conventional IVF cycles with different proportions of 3 PN/MPN zygotes. A total of 1428 conventional IVF patients with ≥6 oocytes retrieved and fresh embryos transferred were divided into 4 groups according to the proportions of 3 PN/MPN zygotes.

Objective: To evaluate changes in prevalence and severity of cerebral palsy (CP) among surviving children born at <27 weeks of gestation over time and to determine associations between CP and other developmental domains, functional impairment, medical morbidities, and resource use among 2-year-old children who were born extremely preterm.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study using prospective registry data, conducted at 25 centers of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network. Participants were children born at <27 weeks of gestation and followed at 18 through 26 months of corrected age from 2008 through 2019.

Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) of the endometrium shows a variety of morphologic appearances, including small glands, tubules with eosinophilic materials in the lumen, prominent papillary patterns, spindled cells, solid formations, and corded and hyalinized patterns. Unique morphology, characteristic immunohistochemical staining patterns, molecular alterations, and awareness of the pathologists make it possible to identify this tumor accurately. This report of two additional morphologic patterns, intestinal goblet cells mimicking intestinal-type mucinous carcinoma and squamous differentiation with spindle and epithelioid cells mimicking carcinosarcoma of the endometrium will expand the literature on MLA.

Objectives: Comprehensive counseling on prenatal genetic screening and diagnostic testing is challenging for clinicians. We sought to identify baseline clinician knowledge of prenatal genetic screening and diagnostic testing and needs to promote counseling aligned with ACOG recommendations.

Methods: We performed an anonymous, cross-sectional survey of clinicians at two unaffiliated, tertiary academic institutions to assess the knowledge of, confidence in, and time spent counseling on prenatal genetic screening and diagnostic testing.
