Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how being overweight before pregnancy (prepregnancy BMI) affects the chances of getting preeclampsia (PE) in women having twins.
  • Overweight women were more likely to report PE (11.8%) compared to non-overweight women (5.6%) and had more complications after giving birth.
  • Factors like gaining too much weight during pregnancy and low protein levels were linked to PE for both groups, while taking aspirin and having certain types of twins helped reduce risks.

Int J Neonatal Screen

March 2024

Department of Guangzhou Newborn Screening Center, Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Child Health, Guangzhou 510180, China.

The aim of this study was to observe the outcomes of newborn screening (NBS) in a certain population by using next-generation sequencing (NGS) as a first-tier screening test combined with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). We performed a multicenter study of 29,601 newborns from eight screening centers with NBS via NGS combined with MS/MS. A custom-designed panel targeting the coding region of the 142 genes of 128 inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) was applied as a first-tier screening test, and expanded NBS using MS/MS was executed simultaneously.

Association between diabetes mellitus and primary restenosis following endovascular treatment: a comprehensive meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Cardiovasc Diabetol

April 2024

Department of Pharmacology, Basic Medicine Research Innovation Center for Cardiometabolic Diseases, Ministry of Education, and Laboratory for Cardiovascular Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy, Southwest Medical University, Luzhou, 646000, China.

Importance: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is thought to be closely related to arterial stenotic or occlusive disease caused by atherosclerosis. However, there is still no definitive clinical evidence to confirm that patients with diabetes have a higher risk of restenosis.

Objective: This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effect of DM on restenosis among patients undergoing endovascular treatment, such as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) or stenting.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of high mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1) in placental development and fetal growth.

Methods: We employed the Cre-loxP recombination system to establish a placenta-specific HMGB1 knockout mouse model. Breeding HMGB1flox/flox mice with Elf5-Cre mice facilitated the knockout, leveraging Elf5 expression in extra-embryonic ectoderm, ectoplacental cone, and trophoblast giant cells at 12.

Chongqing Clinical Research Centre for Reproductive Medicine, Chongqing Health Centre for Women and Children, Chongqing, China; Chongqing Key Laboratory of Human Embryo Engineering, Centre for Reproductive Medicine, Women and Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China. Electronic address:

Research Question: Is the total duration of spontaneous blastocyst collapse to re-expansion before biopsy related to ploidy and live birth rates after single euploid blastocyst transfer?

Design: This was a retrospective cohort study of 600 preimplantation genetic testing cycles for aneuploidy (PGT-A) cycles, involving 2203 biopsied blastocysts, at a large reproductive medicine centre. Features of spontaneous blastocyst collapse from full to expanded stage, before biopsy, were observed using an embryoscope viewer for embryos cultured in a time-lapse incubator. In total, 568 cycles of frozen blastocyst transfers, either single euploid or mosaic, were performed.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy, with significant short-term and long-term implications for both mothers and their offspring. Previous studies have indicated the potential benefits of vitamin D in reducing the risk of GDM, yet little is known about this association in twin pregnancies. This study aimed to investigate maternal vitamin D status in the second trimester and examine its association with the risk of GDM in twin pregnancies.

Article Synopsis
  • A study at Sichuan Jinxin Xinan Women and Children's Hospital examined the effects of embryo cryopreservation duration on frozen embryo transfer outcomes over 47,006 cycles from 2015 to 2021, categorizing participants into three groups based on cryopreservation time: ≤1 year, 1 to 6 years, and ≥6 years.
  • Results indicated that embryos frozen for more than 1 year had lower clinical pregnancy rates and live birth rates, with significant risks for ectopic pregnancies and early miscarriages increasing after 6 years of freezing.
  • No notable differences were found in birth weight or sex ratios, but male infants were more common across all groups, reinforcing the idea that shorter cryopreservation times (

A midbrain GABAergic circuit constrains wakefulness in a mouse model of stress.

Nat Commun

March 2024

Department of Physiology, College of Basic Medical Sciences, Army Medical University, Chongqing, 400038, China.

Enhancement of wakefulness is a prerequisite for adaptive behaviors to cope with acute stress, but hyperarousal is associated with impaired behavioral performance. Although the neural circuitries promoting wakefulness in acute stress conditions have been extensively identified, less is known about the circuit mechanisms constraining wakefulness to prevent hyperarousal. Here, we found that chemogenetic or optogenetic activation of GAD2-positive GABAergic neurons in the midbrain dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) decreased wakefulness, while inhibition or ablation of these neurons produced an increase in wakefulness along with hyperactivity.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has caused significant economic losses in the swine industry. In this study, the high-throughput sequencing, microRNAs (miRNAs) mimic, and lentivirus were used to screen for potential miRNAs that can promote PRRSV infection in porcine alveolar macrophages or Marc-145 cells. It was observed that novel-216, a previously unidentified miRNA, was upregulated through the p38 signaling pathway during PRRSV infection, and its overexpression significantly increased PRRSV replication.
