Front Oncol

July 2024

Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease of Zhejiang Province, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Pneumonia (PJP) poses a serious risk for immunocompromised patients, particularly those with lung cancer treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), which have shown survival benefits but may also increase mortality.
  • A retrospective study compared mortality rates in lung cancer patients with PJP, revealing that ICI-treated patients experienced higher mortality within 28 days of infection (33.3% vs. 0% in non-ICI patients).
  • The study suggests the need for further research, advocating for larger, multi-center studies to confirm findings on the impact of ICI on PJP mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • Flatfoot, caused by factors like age and genetics, is a common issue, and studies suggest custom-made insoles might help improve symptoms and foot pressure.
  • This study tested the effectiveness of these insoles during gait analysis on different slopes with 10 subjects, comparing custom-made to ordinary insoles.
  • Results showed that the custom insoles helped redistribute pressure, improving gait stability and reducing fatigue, especially during uphill and level walking, while potentially preventing injuries during downhill walking.

Thyroid cancer has emerged as the most rapidly proliferating solid neoplasm. In this study, we included a cohort of patients who underwent sonographic assessment and surgical intervention at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, associated with the School of Medicine at Zhejiang University, spanning from January 2019 to June 2020. Stratification of cases was based on a combination of preoperative ultrasonographic evaluations and postoperative histopathological diagnoses, resulting in three distinct groups: high-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) labeled as C1, low-risk PTC designated as C2, and a control group (N) composed of benign thyroid tissue adjacent to the carcinoma.

Background: Physical activity during pregnancy has been recommended as an effective measure to prevent various pregnancy complications. However, global physical activity participation during pregnancy is not optimal, and the factors influencing physical activity participation during pregnancy need to be further investigated. In China, where there are no localized guidelines for physical activity during pregnancy, the prevalence of meeting recommended physical activity levels among Chinese pregnant women is still unclear.

Electronic address:

Background: Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is the most fatal form of inherited primary immunodeficiency disease. Known molecular defect mutations occur in most children with SCID.

Methods: Herein, we report Adenosine Deaminase-SCID (ADA-SCID) using whole-exome sequencing (WES), explore exome mutational landscape and significance for 17 SCID samples, and verify the mutated exon genes using the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets.

Gastric‑type endocervical adenocarcinoma: A report of two cases.

Oncol Lett

August 2024

Department of Ultrasound Medicine, and State Key Laboratory of Precision Diagnosis and Therapy for Major Gynecological Diseases, Women's Hospital School of Medicine Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310000, P.R. China.

Gastric-type endocervical adenocarcinoma (GEA) is an uncommon and highly aggressive malignancy, characterized by non-specific clinical manifestations. The limited number of documented cases poses significant challenges in achieving an early preoperative diagnosis. In the present study, two cases of GEA in female patients, aged 46 and 39 years, who presented with the chief complaint of profuse vaginal discharge are described.

Objective: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common chronic morbidity in extremely preterm infants. Mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes (MSC-Exos) therapies have shown prospects in animal models of BPD. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of adipose mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes (AMSC-Exos) on BPD and the role of the NF-κB signaling pathway in this process.

Background: Probiotic supplementation has a positive effect on endurance exercise performance and body composition in athletes, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Gut microbiota can provide measurable markers of immune function in athletes, and microbial composition analysis may be sensitive enough to detect stress and metabolic disorders caused by exercise.

Methods: Nineteen healthy active amateur marathon runners (15 male and 4 female) with a mean age of 29.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the quality and experiences of women participating in Centering-Based Group Care (CBGC) in Zhejiang, China, highlighting its popularity as a supportive prenatal care model for women with low medical needs.
  • Women's feedback indicated a high average quality score of 4.43 for CBGC, emphasizing its benefits in enhancing knowledge, social connections, and psychological support.
  • The research suggests that while CBGC shows promise, further studies are necessary to assess its effectiveness and quality, as current findings were based on a limited sample size.

Introduction: The potential role of the endometrial microbiota in the pathogenesis of endometrial polyps (EPs) warrants further investigation, given the current landscape of limited and inconclusive research findings. We aimed to explore the microecological characteristics of the uterine cavity in patients with EPs and investigate the potential of endometrial microbiota species as novel biomarkers for identifying EPs.

Methods: Endometrial samples were collected from 225 patients who underwent hysteroscopies, of whom 167 had EPs, whereas 58 had non- hyperproliferative endometrium status.

The aim of this study as to unveil changes in serum inflammatory factors in pregnant women with genital tract group B (GBS) infection and their predictive value for premature rupture of membranes (PROM) complicated by chorioamnionitis (CS) and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The value of serum inflammatory factor levels in predicting PROM complicating CS and adverse pregnancy outcomes in GBS-infected pregnant women was evaluated by ELISA. Serum IL-6, TNF-α, PCT and hs-CRP levels were higher in pregnant women with GBS infection.

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the most common chronic diseases among women, which can endanger their physical and mental health and incur a heavy financial burden on both individuals and society. Web-based interventions (WBIs) have been applied to manage women's UI, but their effectiveness has remained inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to explore the effectiveness of WBIs on self-reported symptom severity, condition-specific quality of life, adherence to pelvic floor muscle training (primary outcomes) and other extensive secondary outcomes among women with UI.

Currently, the precise causes of over 40 % of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) cases cannot be identified, leading to the term "unexplained RSA" (URSA). Through an exploration of the gut microbiota, metabolites, and immune cell subsets in URSA, this study establishes a link between gut microbiota-derived metabolites and immune cells. The results indicate reduced diversity in the gut microbiota of URSA.
