Background: We investigated the pregnancy outcomes in women who were diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) by the International Association of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) criteria but not by the Carpenter-Coustan (CC) criteria.

Methods: A total of 8,735 Korean pregnant women were identified at two hospitals between 2014 and 2016. Among them, 2,038 women participated in the prospective cohort to investigate pregnancy outcomes.

Background: Women with one abnormal value (OAV) in a 100 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) during pregnancy are reported to have an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, there is limited data about whether women with OAV will progress to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) when the OGTT is repeated.

Methods: To identify clinical and metabolic predictors for GDM in women with OAV, we conducted a retrospective study and identified women with OAV in the OGTT done at 24 to 30 weeks gestational age (GA) and repeated the second OGTT between 32 and 34 weeks of GA.

Background: We investigated whether there is a difference in elastographic parameters between pregnancies with and without spontaneous preterm delivery (sPTD) in women with a short cervix (≤ 25 mm), and examined the ability of elastographic parameters to predict sPTD in those women.

Methods: E-Cervix (WS80A; Samsung Medison, Seoul, Korea) elastography was used to examine the cervical strain. Elastographic parameters were compared between pregnancies with and without sPTD.

Delphinidin inhibits epidermal growth factor-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

J Cell Biochem

June 2019

Laboratory of Molecular Oncology, Cheil General Hospital & Women's Healthcare Center, College of Medicine, Dankook University, Seoul, South Korea.

Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), important cellular process in metastasis of primary tumors, is characterized by loss of their cell polarity, disruption of cell-cell adhesion, and gain certain properties of mesenchymal phenotype that enable migration and invasion. Delphinidin is a member of anthocyanidin belong to flavonoid groups, known as having pharmacological and physiological effects including anti-tumorigenic, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiangiogenic effects. However, the effects of delphinidin on EMT is rarely investigated.

Is injury to the inferior alveolar nerve still common during orthognathic surgery? Manual twist technique for sagittal split ramus osteotomy.

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg

December 2018

Dept. of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Cheil General Hospital and Women's Healthcare Center, Dankook University, College of Medicine, South Korea. Electronic address:

The osteotomy in a bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) is made in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), so direct damage to the nerve and irreversible neurosensory deficit may result. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of injury to the nerve when a conventional osteotomy using an osteotome was made, with that after manual twist splitting. We retrospectively reviewed the casenotes of 769 consecutive patients who had bilateral SSRO either alone or with a simultaneous maxillary procedure by a single surgeon from May 2009 - October 2016.

We evaluated the dietary habits of breast cancer survivors and investigated the relationship with quality of life (QoL), with 1,156 survivors recruited from 17 institutions. We used the Questionnaire Survey of Dietary Habits of Korean Adults (Q-DH-KOR) comprising 25 questions. The following indices were derived as follows: (1) quality of healthy dietary habits (Q-HD)-eight questions on number of meals, regularity, quantity, duration, skipping breakfast, dinner with companion(s), overeating and late-night snacks; (2) habits of nutritional balance (H-NB)-questions on consuming five food categories (grains, fruits, proteins, vegetables and dairy products); and (3) habits of unhealthy foods (H-UF)-questions on consuming three food categories (fatty, instant and fast foods).

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of bevacizumab with single-agent chemotherapy for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer in a real-world setting.

Patients And Methods: We enrolled recurrent platinum-resistant ovarian cancer patients from 27 institutions. All had received bevacizumab with single-agent chemotherapy (weekly paclitaxel, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD), topotecan) between 2015 and 2017 for second- or third-line chemotherapy in routine clinical practice.

Introduction: Recently, we identified three novel fetal-specific epigenetic DNA regions (FSERs) on chromosome 21 for detection of noninvasive fetal trisomy 21 (T21). In this study, the diagnostic accuracies of the three FSERs were assessed on a larger panel of the first-trimester pregnant women.

Material And Methods: This study was conducted with maternal plasma collected from 167 pregnant women carrying 155 chromosomally normal and 12 T21 fetuses (10-13 gestational weeks).

Prediabetic subjects represent a vulnerable population, requiring special care to reduce the risk of diabetes onset. We developed and validated a diabetes risk score for prediabetic subjects using the Korea National Diabetes Program (KNDP) cohort. Subjects included in the multicenter and prospective cohort (n = 1162) had high diabetes risk at baseline (2005) and were followed until 2012.

Background: We explored the genetic variants that were associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by genome-wide association study (GWAS) and evaluated the association of genetic risk scores (GRS) of the selected genetic variants with insulin resistance and the interaction of the GRS with nutrient intake to develop insulin resistance.

Methods: The 6 genetic variants involved in brain and nervous system (acid sensing ion channel subunit 2 rs8071961, rs1988598, and rs16589, macro domain containing 2 rs7262810 CHRM3 rs1867265 and chromosome 2 open reading frame 83 rs11889798) were selected from a GWAS of the PCOS study. GRS of the 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms was calculated in 3,723 Korean women in the Ansan/Ansung cohort of KARE study.

Purpose: Urinary incontinence (UI) is associated with nursing home admission, functional decline, and risk of death among community-dwelling older adults. Little information, however, is available on sex differences in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in older Korean adults exclusively living in rural areas. This study examined sex-related differences in LUTS, factors associated with UI in older adults living in rural areas, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in incontinent older adults.

Purpose: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a standard axillary surgery in early breast cancer. If the SLNB result is positive, subsequent axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is a routine procedure. In 2011, the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Z0011 trial revealed that ALND may not be necessary in early breast cancer with one or two positive sentinel lymph nodes.

Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) provide practical guides for treatment; however, studies that have evaluated PROs of women in Korea with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) are lacking. This cross-sectional, multi-center (29 nationwide hospitals) study, performed from March 2013 to July 2014, aimed to assess PROs related to treatment satisfaction, medication adherence, and quality of life (QoL) in Korean PMO women using osteoporosis medication for prevention/treatment. Patient demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, PROs, and experience using medication were collected.

Methods: Randomized patients in all three groups (early antagonist, n=14; conventional antagonist, n=11; long agonist, n=11) received 21 days of oral contraceptive pill treatment prior to stimulation. The GnRH antagonist was initiated on the 1st day of stimulation in the early antagonist group and on the 6th day in the conventional antagonist group.
