Water justice-equitable, reliable access to clean, sufficient water, and the knowledge and mechanisms related to its management-is a key global social justice and environmental issue. Cape Town, South Africa, is an important context to explore water justice due to its 2018 water crisis. Water scarcity intersects with other issues, including health disparities, food insecurity, and gender inequity, in turn requiring citizen engagement in water-related issues and knowledge sharing to produce sustainable, contextually relevant solutions.

Introduction: Disparities of power between high-income (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have long characterised the structures of global health, including knowledge production and training. Historical case study analysis is an often-overlooked tool to improve our understanding of how to mitigate inequalities.

Methods: Drawing from the contemporary experience of collaborators from Canada and Ethiopia, we chose to examine the historical relationship between Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie and Canadian Jesuit Lucien Matte as a case study for international collaborations based on the model of an 'invited guest'.

Background: Peritumoral edema on staging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is associated with higher local recurrence in soft tissue sarcoma (STS). This may relate to the presence of satellite malignant cells that are difficult to distinguish from benign atypia, leading to over- or undertreatment. This study evaluated a novel targeted molecular approach to identify malignancy in STS peritumoral planes as a means to improve personalized care.

Breast cancer and ATM mutations: treatment implications.

Hered Cancer Clin Pract

November 2024

Women's College Research Institute, Women's College Hospital, 76 Grenville Street, Toronto, ON, M5S 1B2, Canada.

Genetic testing for breast cancer predisposing genes has expanded beyond BRCA1 and BRCA2 and now includes panels of 20 or more genes. It is now recommended that all women diagnosed with breast cancer at age 65 or below be offered testing for an extended gene panel. The rationale for testing includes personalizing the management of breast cancer according to the mutation found.

Objective: The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) criteria for osteoarthritis (OA) obviate the need for physical exam or imaging, and their use may improve timely diagnosis of OA. However, they have not been validated.

Methods: Within a larger study of individuals with type 2 diabetes, participants with and without self-reported knee pain underwent assessment of the NICE criteria for knee OA by questionnaire (index test), and clinical evaluation for established or possible knee OA by a rheumatologist (reference standard).

Background: Racism has been shown to impact the health of Black persons through its influence on health care, including its expression through implicit biases in provider training, attitudes, and behaviours. Less is known about the experiences of racism in contexts outside of the USA, and how race and racism interact with other social locations and systems of discrimination to shape Black patients' experiences of racism in health care encounters. To help address this gap, this study examined diverse Black individuals' perceived experiences of, and attitudes towards, anti-Black racism and racial discrimination in Canadian health care, specifically in Montreal, Quebec.

Evaluating prevalence and trajectory of functional disability in older surgical patients: An observational cohort study.

J Clin Anesth

December 2024

Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management, Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada; Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, ON, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and changes in functional disability among older surgical patients before and after surgery, as well as identify risk factors and compare clinical outcomes between patients with and without functional disability.
  • A total of 307 patients aged 65 and older undergoing non-cardiac surgery were assessed using a disability measurement tool, revealing that a significant number had preoperative functional disability, but many showed improvement post-surgery.
  • Patients with preoperative functional disability had a higher likelihood of persistent disability after 180 days, and factors like preoperative functional status and depression significantly increased the odds of long-term disability.

Multi-centre modified Delphi exercise to identify candidate items for classifying early-stage symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis Cartilage

January 2025

Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada; Research and Innovation Institute, Women's College Hospital, Toronto, Canada. Electronic address:

Objective: To generate a list of candidate items potentially useful for discriminating individuals with Early-stage Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis (EsSKOA) from those with other conditions and from established osteoarthritis (OA), and to reduce this list based on expert consensus.

Design: We conducted a three-round online international modified Delphi exercise with OA clinicians and researchers ("OA experts"). In Round 1, participants reviewed 84 candidate items and nominated additional item(s) potentially useful for EsSKOA classification; those nominated by ≥3 participants were added.

It is thirty years since the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes were discovered and genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 was introduced. Despite increasing awareness of the genetic basis of cancer and our evolving knowledge of effective means of prevention, screening, and treatment for hereditary breast and ovarian cancers, genetic testing is underutilized, and most mutation carriers remain unidentified. In this commentary, we explore possible reasons for why this might be so.
