Spray coating is an industrially mature technique used to deposit thin films that combines high throughput with the ability to coat nonplanar surfaces. Here, we explore the use of ultrasonic spray coating to fabricate perovskite solar cells (PSCs) over rigid, nonplanar surfaces without problems caused by solution dewetting and subsequent "run-off". Encouragingly, we find that PSCs can be spray-coated using our processes onto glass substrates held at angles of inclination up to 45° away from the horizontal, with such devices having comparable power conversion efficiencies (up to 18.

In the vat photopolymerisation 3D printing technique, the properties of the printed parts are highly dependent on the degree of conversion of the monomers. The mechanisms and advantages of vat photopolymerisation at elevated temperatures, or so called "hot lithography", were investigated in this paper. Two types of photoresins, commercially used as highly accurate castable resins, with different structural and diluent monomers, were employed in this study.

Nowadays, repair and replacement of hyaline articular cartilage still challenges orthopedic surgery. Using a graft of decellularized articular cartilage as a structural scaffold is considered as a promising therapy. So far, successful cell removal has only been possible for small samples with destruction of the macrostructure or loss of biomechanics.

Quantitative analysis of fibre orientation in a random fibrous network (RFN) is important to understand their microstructure, properties and performance. 2D fibre orientation distribution presents an in-plane fibre orientation without any information on fibre orientation in thickness direction. This research introduces a fully parametric algorithm for computing 3D fibre orientation as thickness is important for high-density or thick fibrous networks.

Seeds sense temperature, nutrient levels and light conditions to inform decision making on the timing of germination. Limited light availability for photoblastic species results in irregular germination timing and losses of population germination percentage. Seed industries are therefore looking for interventions to mitigate this risk.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) show immunosuppressive effects both cell-to-cell contact (direct) with immune cells and by producing paracrine factors and extracellular vesicles (indirect). A key challenge in delivering this therapeutic effect is retaining the MSCs at the site of injection. One way to address this is by encapsulating the MSCs within suitable biomaterial scaffolds.

At present, underwater electric pulsed discharges are used in a wide range of modern applications. During the development of a system for generating underwater acoustic pressure pulses, a numerical model is an essential tool for guiding the design and interpreting the data. Developing a complex one-dimensional numerical code, like those presented in the literature, requires a substantial dedicated effort.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are foreseen as a leading candidate to harvest mechanical energy from ambient sources such as human body movements. However, wearable TENGs, which are used for this purpose, require adequate wearability for long durations, in addition to sufficient electrical outputs. So far, it has been difficult to achieve this through the predominantly plastic-based wearable TENGs constructed using conventional nanogenerator fabrication methods.

Contribution of finite element method (FEM) as a modelling and simulation technique to represent complex tribological processes has improved our understanding about various biomaterials. This paper presents a review of the advances in the domain of finite element (FE) modelling for simulating tribology, wear, cutting and other processes involving high-strain rate plastic deformation of metals used in bio tribology and machining. Although the study is largely focused on material removal cases in metals, the modelling strategies can be applied to a wide range of other materials.

Mitochondria are intracellular organelles that utilize nutrients to generate energy in the form of ATP by oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in humans is a 16,569 base pair double-stranded circular DNA that encodes for 13 vital proteins of the electron transport chain. Our understanding of the mitochondrial genome's transcription, translation, and maintenance is still emerging, and human pathologies caused by mtDNA dysfunction are widely observed.

In this article, we show that significant deviations from the classical quasi-steady models of droplet evaporation can arise solely due to transient effects in the gas phase. The problem of fully transient evaporation of a single droplet in an infinite atmosphere is solved in a generalized, dimensionless framework with explicitly stated assumptions. The differences between the classical quasi-steady and fully transient models are quantified for a wide range of the 10-dimensional input domain and a robust predictive tool to rapidly quantify this difference is reported.

Using an atomic force microscope, a nanoscale wear characterization method has been applied to a commercial steel substrate AISI 52100, a common bearing material. Two wear mechanisms were observed by the presented method: atom attrition and elastoplastic ploughing. It is shown that not only friction can be used to classify the difference between these two mechanisms, but also the 'degree of wear'.

The growing interest to the use of collagen films for biomedical applications motivates the analysis of their fracture behaviour in different environments. Studies revealed the decreased mechanical strength and stiffness as well as increased plasticity in water compared to collagen specimens tested in air. However, the fracture behaviour of pure collagen films in both air and water has not been reported so far.

The control of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK has necessitated restrictions on amateur and professional sports due to the perceived infection risk to competitors, via direct person to person transmission, or possibly via the surfaces of sports equipment. The sharing of sports equipment such as tennis balls was therefore banned by some sport's governing bodies. We sought to investigate the potential of sporting equipment as transmission vectors of SARS-CoV-2.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may severely impair pulmonary function and cause hypoxia. However, the association of COVID-19 pneumonia on CT with impaired ventilation remains unexplained. This pilot study aims to demonstrate the relationship between the radiological findings on COVID-19 CT images and ventilation abnormalities simulated in a computational model linked to the patients' symptoms.

Electronic waste produced by plastic, toxic, and semiconducting components of existing electronic devices is dramatically increasing environmental pollution. To overcome these issues, the use of eco-friendly materials for designing such devices is attaining much attention. This current work presents a recycled material-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) made of plastic waste and carbon-coated paper wipes (C@PWs), in which the PWs are also collected from a waste bin.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the capabilities of finite-element (FE) models to predict contraction of wounds managed with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). The features of wounds and surrounding tissues were analysed to gain insights into the mechanical effects of NPWT on them. 3D digital image correlation (DIC) measurement of soft tissue phantoms was used to investigate the effect of wound thickness, size, and shape, which were further compared with results of FE simulations.
