Purpose: Physical activity (PA) is associated with better quality of life for cancer survivors; however, less is known about this association among individuals with advanced cancer. This study assesses whether changes in PA following an advanced cancer diagnosis are associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes.
Methods: Data were collected from 247 participants in a survey of adults with advanced cancer who visited the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center (January 2021-2023).

A post-transition state surface intersection (PTSSI) between radical and zwitterionic states that causes a bifurcation in the reaction pathway was discovered through density functional theory calculations on potential energy surfaces and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of cycloadditions between a bicyclobutane and a triazolinedione (BCB-TAD). It was predicted that changes to the solvent polarity would enable control over the dynamic selectivity in this system; indeed, experimental evidence supported this prediction. This work not only provides new insights into an unusual type of post-transition state bifurcation, but also demonstrates how the nonstatistical dynamic effects that control selectivity for such reactions can be manipulated rationally to increase the yields of synthetically useful reactions.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of protein aggregates, which are thought to be influenced by posttranslational modifications (PTMs). Dehydroamino acids (DHAAs) are rarely observed PTMs that contain an electrophilic alkene capable of forming protein-protein crosslinks, which may lead to protein aggregation. We report here the discovery of DHAAs in the protein aggregates from AD, constituting an unknown and previously unsuspected source of extensive proteomic complexity.

As instructors implement these practices, there is a need for instructors, departments, and faculty developers to measure instructor progress and to help identify next steps in improving inclusive STEM teaching. This study describes the development of the Faculty Inclusive Teaching Survey (FITS) using scale-development theory, frameworks using Clarke and Hollingsworth's interconnected model of professional growth and Dewsbury's Deep Teaching model, and higher-education STEM, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and professional development literature.

Lipases such as patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3) exist in multiple tissue types. In subcutaneous adipose tissue, PNPLA3 was not altered during the periparturient period. Here, we sought to engineer the decarboxylative aldolase UstD to perform a challenging C-C bond forming reaction with ketone electrophiles. Desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) provides direct analytical readouts of small molecules that can be used to characterize the metabolic phenotypes of genetically engineered bacteria. In an effort to accelerate the time frame associated with the screening of mutant libraries, we have developed a high-throughput DESI-MSI analytical workflow implementing a single raster line-scan strategy that facilitates the collection of location-resolved molecular information from engineered strains on a subminute time scale. Evaluation of this "Fast-Pass" DESI-MSI phenotyping workflow on analytical standards demonstrated the capability of acquiring full metabolic profiling information with a throughput of ∼40 s per sample.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in the stroma of solid tumors promote an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) that drives resistance to therapies. The expression of the protease fibroblast activation protein (FAP) on the surface of CAFs has made FAP a target for development of therapies to dampen immunosuppression. Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by lower lip pits and orofacial clefts (OFCs). With a prevalence of approximately 1 in 35,000 live births, it is the most common form of syndromic clefting and may account for ~2% of all OFCs. Residual nitrite (NO) and nitrate (NO) have been widely studied in the past few decades for their function to improve processed meat quality and their impact on human health. In this study we examined how the residual nitrite and nitrate (NO) content of major classes of processed meats products (n = 1132) produced locally from three regions (East Coast, Midwest and West Coast) and plant protein-based meat analogues (n = 53) available at retail in the United States was influenced by their composition, processing, and geographical attributes. We also conducted time-dependent depletion studies and observed different patterns of NO depletion and conversion during processing and storage and correlated them with product quality.

Tail docking and ear tagging are common husbandry practices in lambs, but little is known about subsequent wound healing or how it may be affected by performing both procedures concurrently. Our objectives were to: (1) describe wound healing following tail docking and ear tagging, and (2) compare healing of ear wounds in docked and undocked lambs.
