Microbiome diversity and diet composition concomitantly influence species health, fitness, immunity, and digestion. In environments where diet varies spatially and temporally, microbiome plasticity may promote rapid host adaptation to available resources. For northern ungulates in particular, metabarcoding of noninvasively collected fecal pellets presents unprecedented insights into their diverse ecological requirements and niches by clarifying the interrelationships of microbiomes, key to deriving nutrients, in context of altered forage availability in changing climates.

Background: The optimal heart rate (HR) in dogs with atrial fibrillation (AF) is unknown. Impact of HR on survival needs elucidation.

Hypothesis/objectives: Dogs with a 24 hours Holter-derived meanHR ≤125 beats per minute (bpm; rate controlled) survive longer than dogs with higher meanHR.

Article Synopsis
  • Illicit opioids, especially fentanyl and synthetic opioids, are the main cause of overdose deaths in the U.S., and xylazine, a veterinary drug, is increasingly found in overdose cases.
  • A study investigated clinical outcomes in emergency department patients with opioid overdoses, comparing those who tested positive for xylazine to those who did not.
  • Results showed that patients with xylazine exposure had significantly lower odds of experiencing severe outcomes like cardiac arrest and coma after an overdose.

A 1-year-old Bernese Mountain dog presented with an acute onset of left thoracic limb lameness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the left shoulder was performed, showing a subchondral bone defect in the caudomedial aspect of the humeral head. In addition, several round hypointense structures were visible in the biceps tendon sheath.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate long-term treatment outcomes in feline corneal sequestrum (FCS), compare the recurrence rates between different surgical techniques, identify possible recurrence risk factors and monitor the development of FCS in the contralateral eye.

Methods: The medical records of 72 cats (79 eyes) with FCS treated between 2009 and 2017 were retrospectively analysed.

Results: The most commonly affected breeds were Persian, domestic shorthaired and Burmesecats.

Introduction: This retrospective multicentric study aims to evaluate the ability of CRP concentration to differentiate between dogs diagnosed with IMPA and SRMA. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation widely used in two of the most commonly diagnosed immune-mediated diseases in dogs-Immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA) and steroid responsive meningitis arteritis (SRMA).

Materials And Methods: Data collected from medical records of 167 client-owned dogs included age, breed, gender, neuter status, body weight, body temperature, CRP concentration, month and season of diagnosis.

February 2023

Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, Alton, UK (Calleja); Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia (Shiel); Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service, Solihull, UK (Bree); Ryan Veterinary Hospital - PennVet, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (Silvestrini); North Downs Specialist Referrals, Bletchingley, UK (Trehy); Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, Winchester, UK (McMahon); University College Dublin, School of Veterinary Medicine, Dublin, Ireland (Murtagh).

Objectives: The primary goals of this retrospective study were to describe a population of dogs with portal hypertension secondary to liver disease, and to assess whether prognosis could be inferred from historical, clinical, and clinicopathological data.

Animals And Procedures: Dogs (N = 76) diagnosed with intrahepatic portal hypertension between 2011 and 2020 were included; dogs with known congenital hepatic anomalies were excluded. Effect on survival was assessed using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models for historical, clinical, and clinicopathological variables.

Background: After a strong epidemiological link to diet was established in an outbreak of pancytopenia in cats in spring 2021 in the United Kingdom, 3 dry diets were recalled. Concentrations of the hemato- and myelotoxic mycotoxins T-2, HT-2 and diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS) greater than the European Commission guidance for dry cat foods were detected in the recalled diets.

Objectives: To describe clinical and clinicopathological findings in cats diagnosed with suspected diet induced pancytopenia.

Hepatic ciliated foregut remnants or cysts are congenital abnormalities resulting from retention of embryonic ciliated foregut within the liver. These structures are rarely reported in the human medical literature and have not been reported in the veterinary literature previously, to our knowledge. We describe here a case of an 8-wk-old male French Bulldog with a congenital patent hepatic ciliated foregut remnant resulting in an umbilicobiliary sinus tract.

Objective: There is limited knowledge regarding the safety and accuracy of ultrasound-guided retrobulbar nerve blocks in horses. The aim of this study was to compare these parameters between blind and ultrasound-guided injection techniques for the dorsal retrobulbar nerve block in horses.

Methods: Equine cadaver heads were used to inject the retrobulbar space with contrast medium (CM).

Phosphorus (P) is an essential plant nutrient that can limit plant growth due to low availability in the soil. P-solubilizing bacteria in the roots and rhizosphere increase the P use efficiency of plants. This study addressed the impact of plant species, the level of plant association with bacteria (rhizosphere or root endophyte) and environmental factors (e.

Purpose: To quantify the surgical blood loss during canine enucleation and to investigate the relationship between this and any patient, surgical, and anesthetic factors.

Methods: A prospective observational analysis was conducted on 121 client-owned dogs (130 eyes) undergoing enucleation at a referral ophthalmology clinic. Blood loss was estimated by the gravimetric method (weight difference between dry and blood-containing surgical materials) to provide absolute blood loss (ABL) in milliliters, expressed as a percentage of circulating blood volume, to establish relative blood loss (RBL).

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal changes associated with ischemic stroke are typically described as T2w and FLAIR hyperintense, and T1w isointense lesions. Intralesional T1w hyperintensity is generally attributed to either a hemorrhagic stroke, or an ischemic stroke with hemorrhagic transition, and has an associated signal void on gradient echo (GE) sequences. Cases of ischemic stroke with T1w hyperintense signal in absence of associated signal void on GE sequences have been sporadically demonstrated in human stroke patients, as well as in dogs with experimentally induced ischemia of the middle cerebral artery.

Intervertebral disc disease, including intervertebral disc extrusions and protrusions, is the most common spinal cord disorder in dogs. Atypical and uncommon intervertebral disc herniations include intradural/intramedullary disc extrusion, intervertebral foraminal disc extrusion and intervertebral disc herniation (Schmorl's node). Intradural/extramedullary disc extrusion is the least common type of intervertebral disc herniation in veterinary medicine, characterized by extruded disc material within the intradural space.

J Small Anim Pract

January 2023

Highcroft Veterinary Referrals, Bristol, BS14 9BE, UK.

Objectives: The objective was to compare sharp staphylectomy and staphylectomy using harmonic focus shears, assess surgical time, intraoperative haemorrhage and outcome. Our hypothesis was that harmonic staphylectomy would result in reduced surgical time, decreased intraoperative haemorrhage and greater relative improvement.

Materials And Methods: Dogs that were presented to Highcroft Veterinary Referrals between July 2020 and September 2021 with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome and underwent surgical correction were prospectively enrolled.
