A controlled new oxidant sulfate radical anion (SO4(·-)) was found and it can be easily prepared by mixing Na2S2O4 and TBHP with stirring. In this new metal-free oxidation system (Na2S2O4/TBHP), SO4(·-) can be used as a controllable oxidant to oxidize various aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes in good yields without any acid formation at room temperature. SO4(·-) was determined by a DMPO (5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide) spin-trapping EPR method at room temperature on a Bruker E500 spectrometer and the results suggested that SO4(·-) was generated in this transformation.

A new type of NADH model compound has been synthesized by an efficient and convenient method. This model compound exhibits high reactivity and enantioselectivity in asymmetric reduction reactions. The results show that chiral NADH model S could be effectively combined with Mg(2+) to form ternary complexes.

Alcohols and alkenes are the most abundant and commonly used organic building blocks in the large-scale chemical synthesis. Herein, this is the first time to report a novel and operationally simple coupling reaction of vinylarenes and aliphatic alcohols catalyzed by manganese in the presence of TBHP (tert-butyl hydroperoxide). This coupling reaction provides the oxyalkylated products of vinylarenes with good regioselectivity and accomplishes with the principles of step-economies.

An efficient multi-component reaction to synthesize multi-substituted 1,3-oxazolidine compounds of high optical purity was described. All the products were well-characterized and the absolute configuration of one chiral center was determined. The plausible mechanism was proposed and a kinetic resolution of epoxides process was confirmed.

A novel copper/manganese cocatalyzed direct oxidative coupling of terminal vinylarenes with ketones via C(sp(3))-H bond functionalization following C-C bond formation has been developed using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the radical initiator. Various ketones underwent a free-radical addition of terminal vinylarenes to give the corresponding 1,4-dicarbonyl products with excellent regioselectivity and efficiency through one step. A possible reaction mechanism has been proposed.

An innovative approach was developed for the discovery of new natural products by combining mass spectrometric metabolic profiling with genomic analysis and resulted in the discovery of the columbamides, a new class of di- and trichlorinated acyl amides with cannabinomimetic activity. Three species of cultured marine cyanobacteria, Moorea producens 3L, Moorea producens JHB, and Moorea bouillonii PNG, were subjected to genome sequencing and analysis for their recognizable biosynthetic pathways, and this information was then compared with their respective metabolomes as detected by MS profiling. By genome analysis, a presumed regulatory domain was identified upstream of several previously described biosynthetic gene clusters in two of these cyanobacteria, M.

Background: Lead smelter/refinery workers in the US have had significant exposure to lead and are an important occupational group to study to understand the health effects of chronic lead exposure in adults. Recent research found evidence that studies of lead smelter/refinery workers have been conducted but not published. This paper presents further evidence for this contention.

NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool in describing protein structures and protein activity for pharmaceutical and biochemical development. This study describes a method to determine weak binding ligands in biological systems by using hierarchic diffusion coefficient clustering of multidimensional data obtained with a 400 MHz Bruker NMR. Comparison of DOSY spectrums of ligands of the chemical library in the presence and absence of target proteins show translational diffusion rates for small molecules upon interaction with macromolecules.

The goal of the current analysis was to examine the maturation of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) from three months of age to eight years of age. The superior frontal positive-negative-positive sequence (P1, N2, P2) and the temporal site, negative-positive-negative sequence (possibly, Na, Ta, Tb of the T-complex) were examined. Event-related potentials were recorded from 63 scalp sites to a 250-ms vowel.

The purpose of this article was to describe a successful academic collaboration of 4 New Jersey state colleges and universities. The aim of the collaborative is to prepare and graduate students in a dual role as advanced clinical/practice nurses and nurse faculty within an innovative master of nursing educational program. This effort was funded by a 4-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation NJ Nursing Initiative and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

A survey was sent to a random sample of two groups: traditional baccalaureate graduates and graduates of the accelerated program who had previous degrees in another major and completed the nursing curriculum in a shorter time frame than the traditional students, resulting in a total sample of 73 graduates. Outcome variables included demographics, NCLEX passing rates, transitioning to the professional role, employment, professional development, certifications and self-reported reasons the respondents entered the nursing profession and why they remained.

This study shows that the BTBR T+tf/J mouse, a model for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), has increased levels of the stress hormone corticosterone, when compared to C57BL/6J mice. In addition, we have shown that tail suspension of the BTBR produces a heightened anxiety response in the elevated plus maze. These results suggest that the BTBR mouse is stressor-reactive exhibiting hormone responses that might predispose it to ASD.

Anuran metamorphosis is characterized by rapid and drastic changes in the body form and function under the influence of thyroid hormones. We evaluated the involvement of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defenses during intestinal remodeling and tail regression of tadpoles of Xenopus laevis. Oxidative stress resulting from depletion in catalase and reduced glutathione, and simultaneous increase in lipid peroxidation during intestinal remodeling as well as tail regression are probably responsible for cell death and differentiation in these organs.

Assessment in educational institutions is mandated by the public and by accrediting organizations. Faculty must plan for program assessment within the context of the college or university goals and assessment projects. Within the department or college of nursing, student learning outcomes must be assessed at the total program level and at the course and classroom levels.

A Roy adaptation model-based support and education intervention for women with early-stage breast cancer was tested in a three-group, three-phase randomized clinical trial of a sample of 125 women. The experimental group received 13 months of combined individual telephone and in-person group support and education, Control Group 1 received 13 months of telephone-only individual support and education, and Control Group 2 received one-time mailed educational information. The experimental group and Control Group 1 reported less mood disturbance at the end of all three phases, less loneliness at the end of Phases II and III, and a higher-quality relationship with a significant other at the end of Phase II than did Control Group 2.

Around the globe, older relatives, largely grandparents, have become the surrogate parents to children and adolescents orphaned by parental death from HIV/AIDS and to those whose infected parents are too ill to serve as their primary caregivers. Largely invisible to research, programme and policy initiatives, these older surrogate parents face compounded stress and the risk of neglected and compromised health. An exploratory study of third- and fourth-generation relatives (n=20, mean of 59 years) found an average of 3.

The effects of external Ca(++) on metamorphosis of Rana catesbeiana tadpoles were assessed. Treatment of tadpoles with Ca(++) (0.05 mM) during early prometamorphic stages induced precocious metamorphic events such as tail regression, shortening of the intestine, forelimb emergence, and keratinization of body epidermis within 23 days of treatment compared to control tadpoles still in mid-prometamorphic stages.

In the United States today, thousands of grandmothers and other third- and fourth-generation relatives are raising children and adolescents whose primary parent, usually the mothers, has died from acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or is too ill to serve as the primary parent. More than 100,000 children below the age of 18 are expected to lose their mothers to AIDS by the year 2000, most in poor communities. Isolated by the demands of caregiving, child care, and the stigma of AIDS on even uninfected family members, this group of older surrogate parents is at risk not only for chronic conditions and stress-related somatic complaints, but for neglected health.
