The gut microbiome associates with behavioral outcomes in typical development, but its relationship with neurodevelopment in preterm infants is unknown. Protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) causes chronic wet cough for which seasonal azithromycin is increasingly used to reduce exacerbations. We investigated the impact of seasonal azithromycin on antimicrobial resistance and the nasopharyngeal microbiome. In an observational cohort study, 50 children with PBB were enrolled over two consecutive winters; 25/50 at study entry were designated on clinical grounds to take azithromycin over the winter months and 25/50 were not.

Apart from its role in coordinating sensorimotor integration in the adult brain, the cerebello-thalamic tract (CbT) has also been implicated in developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders. Although the development of the cerebellum, thalamus and cerebral cortex have been studied, there is no detailed description of the ontogeny of the mammalian CbT.

Childhood and adolescence provide a unique window of opportunity to prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease later in life, especially for pediatric groups at risk. The growing list of pediatric groups at risk includes individuals with chronic inflammatory disorders, organ transplants, familial hypercholesterolemia, endocrine disorders, childhood cancer, chronic kidney diseases, congenital heart diseases, and premature birth, as well as increasing numbers of children and adolescents with traditional risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia. Here, we focus on recent advances in cardiovascular risk assessment and management and their implications for pediatric practice.

Broad-spectrum antibiotics for suspected early-onset neonatal sepsis (sEONS) may have pronounced effects on gut microbiome development and selection of antimicrobial resistance when administered in the first week of life, during the assembly phase of the neonatal microbiome. Here, 147 infants born at ≥36 weeks of gestational age, requiring broad-spectrum antibiotics for treatment of sEONS in their first week of life were randomized 1:1:1 to receive three commonly prescribed intravenous antibiotic combinations, namely penicillin + gentamicin, co-amoxiclav + gentamicin or amoxicillin + cefotaxime (ZEBRA study, Trial Register NL4882). Average antibiotic treatment duration was 48 hours.
