The internalization of the gold labelled monoclonal antibody RoMo-1 recognizing the CD 14 surface molecule of human monocytes was studied by electron microscopy. Monocyte enriched mononuclear cells (MNC) from the peripheral blood of healthy donors were incubated for 15, 30, 60, and 90 min with gold marked RoMo-1 in Eagle MEM at 37 degrees C. The process of internalization of RoMo-1 occurs as a receptor mediated endocytosis (RME), as described for other ligands.

In the framework of the complex rehabilitation of cleft lip and palate patients the final phase of the dental therapy is attained with the definitive prosthetic treatment. This study comprises 148 prosthetically treated patients in the period 1973 to 1986. The results show that there are good preconditions for an undisturbed professional and social development of the cleft lip and palate patients through intensive dental care.

Leukocyte malic enzyme-2 (ME2) phenotypes were studied in 313 blood samples from unselected subjects and in 241 human brain tissue samples (postmortem examinations) from the northern part of the GDR. The ME2(2) frequency was 0.34 and the same in blood and brain samples.

We produced a monoclonal antibody against human monocytes (ROMO 1) which was identified to be directed against the monocyte specific glycoprotein CD 14. For electron microscopic studies, this antibody was labelled with colloidal gold. By using a preembedding technique, we investigated the binding and internalization of gold labelled ROMO 1.

In relation to the ability of adhesiveness to HEp-2-cells the sizes of capsules on three strains of Staphylococcus saprophyticus were examined using an electron microscopic India ink technique. There was a good correlation between small amounts of capsular material and good adherence to the tissue culture cells. In contrast to this a very large capsule could be demonstrated on a strain which adhered only in a poor manner.

It is reported about 4 female patients aged from 3 to 31 years (average age 18 years) with gonadal dysgenesis and hyperprolactinemia. Beside one all these females were not treated with synthetic sexual steroids. In 3 of the 4 patients both hyperprolactinemic and hypergonadotropic serum levels were observed.

The prostate epithelium of rats which received repeated cadmium chloride (CdCl2) injections showed a gradual disruption of structural differentiation. Electron microscopy studies revealed severe changes in the ultrastructure affecting all epithelial cell organelles, particularly the nuclei, rough endoplasmatic reticulum, the golgi apparatus, and mitochondria. The cells infiltrating the stroma contained secretory vacuoles and their nuclear evaginations on the invasion front showed similarities to ultrastructural pathological changes in man.

Electrical and mechanical restitution was tested in ventricular preparations of adult NWR and SHR. As in atrial preparations we found a positive correlation between force and action potential duration in the late repolarization phase (APD90), though the effect of test interval prolongation on APD90 was less in papillary muscle compared to atrial preparations. These relationships as well as the differences between NWR and SHR-responses may be interpreted in part by the altered activity of the Na/Ca exchange.

Determining the relative percentage of LMC in PBL histograms of RDT patients during hemodialysis we observed a temporary decrease of the LMC proportion during the first 15 minutes of hemodialysis using Cuprophan in contrast to AN 69S and MC Cellulose. These results correlate with the increase of C3a plasma concentration and the decrease of total count of granulocytes. In all investigated RDT patients higher proportions of LMC could be found in relation to healthy donors already before dialysis treatment.
