Background: The second victim (SV) experience limits the performance of health and care workers and places patients at risk. Peer support is recognised as the most effective, feasible and acceptable intervention to mitigate its impact.
Objective: To define a set of success factors when designing interventions to support SVs in health and care facilities based on expertise in different European countries.

The Second Victim Phenomenon (SVP) significantly impacts the well-being of healthcare professionals and patient safety. While the SVP has been explored in various healthcare settings, there are limited data on its prevalence and associated factors among nurses in Austria. This study investigates the prevalence, symptomatology, and preferred support measures for SVP among Austrian nurses.

Background: In the field of research, psychological safety has been widely recognized as a contributing factor to improving the quality of care and patient safety. However, its consideration in the curricula and traineeship pathways of residents and health care students is scarce.
Objective: This study aims to determine the extent to which health care trainees acquire psychological safety competencies during their internships in clinical settings and identify what measures can be taken to promote their learning.

Background: The second victim phenomenon refers to the emotional trauma healthcare professionals experience following adverse events (AEs) in patient care, which can compromise their ability to provide safe care. This issue has significant implications for patient safety, with AEs leading to substantial human and economic costs.
Analysis: Current evidence indicates that AEs often result from systemic failures, profoundly affecting healthcare workers.

Introduction: Second-victim phenomena may lead to severe reactions like depression or posttraumatic disorder, as well as dysfunction and absenteeism. Medical error as a cause for second victims is not limited to professionals, as family caregivers care for millions of patients at home. It remains unclear whether these are first, second, or double victims in case of error.

Several studies have shown overconfidence effects in hand hygiene practices, which can impair metacognition. We hypothesized that overconfidence might be prevalent in the early education stages of nursing students and that these effects could be reduced through frequent interactive learning formats, such as learning groups.

Objective: Patients surviving acute pulmonary embolism (PE) necessitate long-term treatment and follow-up. However, the chronic economic impact of PE on European healthcare systems remains to be determined.
Methods And Results: We calculated the direct cost of illness during the first year after discharge for the index PE, analyzing data from a multicentre prospective cohort study in Germany.

Clinical Risk Management (CRM) is an important instrument to continuously improve safety of health care delivery. In Germany, hospitals are required by law to implement CRM and incidence reporting systems. Since 2010, nation-wide surveys have been conducted periodically to evaluate implementation of CRM in hospitals.

Introduction Sports-related outcomes and the role of recreational sports activities for shoulder function after intramedullary stabilization (IMS) of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures (DMCFs) in the general population are not well known. In this study, we aimed to determine the sport-related outcomes (return-to-sports [RTS] rate, type of sports, time until RTS, and intensity) and to explore the role of sports after IMS of DMCFs. Materials and Methods This single-center, retrospective, cohort study included patients who underwent IMS of DMCFs between 2009 and 2022 at a Level II trauma center in Germany, experienced no major complications, and had completed at least 1 year of follow-up.

Introduction: Lifelong learning is the foundation for professionals to maintain competence and proficiency in several aspects of economy and medicine. Until now, there is no evidence of overconfidence (the belief to be better than others or tested) and clinical tribalism (the belief that one's own group outperforms others) in the specialty of health economics. We investigated the hypothesis of overconfidence effects and their relation to learning motivation and motivational patterns in healthcare providers regarding healthcare economics.

Background And Aims: The socio-economic burden imposed by acute pulmonary embolism (PE) on European healthcare systems is largely unknown. We sought to determine temporal trends and identify cost drivers of hospitalisation for PE in Germany.
Methods And Results: We analysed the totality of reimbursed hospitalisation costs in Germany (G-DRG system) in the years 2016-2020.

Aims: Catheter-directed treatment (CDT) of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is entering a growth phase in Europe following a steady increase in the USA in the past decade, but the potential economic impact on European healthcare systems remains unknown.
Methods And Results: We built two statistical models for the monthly trend of proportion of CDT among patients with severe (intermediate- or high-risk) PE in the USA. The conservative model was based on admission data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2016-20 and the model reflecting increasing access to advanced treatment from the PERT™ national quality assurance database registry 2018-21.

Background: The second victim phenomenon and moral injury are acknowledged entities of psychological harm for healthcare providers. Both pose risks to patients, healthcare workers, and medical institutions, leading to further adverse events, economic burden, and dysfunctionality. Preceding studies in Germany and Austria showed a prevalence of second victim phenomena exceeding 53 percent among physicians, nurses, emergency physicians, and pediatricians.

Patients benefit from the use of check valves when drugs with a particularly short half-life (e.g., catecholamines) are continually administered through a one-way valve or when an accidental retrograde bolus application must be prevented, as in the event of a rapid sequence induction and intubation.
