This paper explores medical students' perceptions of failure through a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews to gather insights from six students across different academic years at Queen Mary University of London. The study aims to understand how students define failure, its causes, and its impact on their academic and personal lives. Key findings reveal that failure is perceived as multifaceted, influenced by internal and external expectations, and evolves throughout medical school.

Viscoelastic tests (VETs) have transformed assessment of haemostasis and transfusion practices in trauma, cardiac and liver transplantation centres. Impaired haemostasis is a common problem on the general intensive care unit (ICU), but routine use of VETs is rare. We have accordingly reviewed the evidence to determine whether there is evidence to support the use of VETs as a standard point of care test on all ICUs in assessing and managing patients.

Background This study was conducted to determine the wound-related complications, such as wound dehiscence, delayed post-operative stay, and reinterventions in both groups, and compare the incidence of surgical site infection in elective laparotomy wounds in two groups - those with closing subcutaneous fat tissue and those without. Methods At the Government Medical College, Thrissur, 248 patients undergoing elective abdominal surgeries during the period from August 2019 to August 2020 participated in this one-year prospective cross-sectional study. The institutional ethics committee approved the study, and participants provided written informed consent.

Recent advances in computed tomography have resulted in new applications of CT scans in musculoskeletal imaging. Dual-energy CT technology involves the acquisition of data at high and low kilovolts, allowing differentiation and quantification of materials with different X-ray absorption. Newer CT scanners with a variety of post-processing options allow interesting applications of dual-energy CT in musculoskeletal and trauma imaging.

Background The spleen is one of the most common solid organs injured in blunt abdominal trauma with significant mortality. The management of splenic injury has significantly changed over the last few decades, ranging from certain splenectomies to non-operative management (NOM). Although several retrospective studies have been published on the NOM of minor spleen injuries, few studies have analyzed the results of NOM for high-grade splenic injuries.

Late clinical presentation is a hallmark of retroperitoneal sarcomas. The symptoms are often nonspecific, and nodal metastases are rare.

Introduction: Current practice following injury within the United Kingdom is to receive surgery, at the institution of first contact regardless of ability to provide timely intervention and inconsiderate of neighbouring hospital resource and capacity. This can lead to a mismatch of demand and capacity, delayed surgery and stress within hospital systems, particularly with regards to elective services. We demonstrate through a multicentre, multinational study, the impact of this at scale.

Introduction: Cognitive activity and awareness during cardiac arrest (CA) are reported but ill understood. This first of a kind study examined consciousness and its underlying electrocortical biomarkers during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Methods: In a prospective 25-site in-hospital study, we incorporated a) independent audiovisual testing of awareness, including explicit and implicit learning using a computer and headphones, with b) continuous real-time electroencephalography(EEG) and cerebral oxygenation(rSO) monitoring into CPR during in-hospital CA (IHCA).

Osteoporosis is an important public health concern, with secondary fragility fractures carrying a poor prognosis. The role of a Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) is to identify fragility fracture patients via investigation and risk assessment. This serves to address the osteoporosis treatment care gap that exists where the majority of patients with a new fragility fracture over 50-years-old fail to receive a bone mass density (BMD) scan and osteoporosis treatment, ultimately receiving inadequate care.

Following dislocation of the glenohumeral joint with an isolated greater tuberosity fracture, closed reduction in the emergency department can lead to fracture propagation or iatrogenic fractures. This article assesses the evidence regarding when anterior dislocations of the shoulder with an isolated fracture of the greater tuberosity can be safely reduced in the emergency department, as there is currently no clear guidance on this. A total of eight articles described 172 cases which underwent closed reduction, which resulted in 22 cases of iatrogenic fractures.

This retrospective case series aimed to identify whether trans-articular screws, dorsal bridging plates or if a 4-corner compression plate offers better functional outcome after B2 Lis Franc injuries. Thirty-eight patients underwent surgical fixation for these injuries over 5 years in a Level 1 Trauma Centre. Patients were treated in 1 of 3 treatment arms: trans-articular screw, dorsal bridge plate, or 4-corner compression plate fixation.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is defined as the ability to perceive and manage the emotions of oneself and others. Despite being one of the most highly used psychological terms in popular nomenclature, its understanding in the context of clinicians remains poor. There is a dearth of literature on this topic, and this submission examines the relationship between a clinicians' EI and the key domains of "Good Medical Practice" guidelines from the General Medical Council, United Kingdom.

Despite many significant changes as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and reductions in overall trauma workload, patients with fragility hip fractures continued to present to hospital. As we plan for ongoing service provision during future waves of the pandemic, valuable lessons can be learned from patients that have been treated surgically during the "first wave." All patients admitted to our center (a busy District General Hospital in London, United Kingdom) with a hip fracture during a 13-week period representing the initial rise ("United Kingdom first wave") in COVID-19 cases, from February 17 to May 17 , 2020 (study group) were compared with hip fracture patients from the equivalent 13-week period in February to May 2019 (control group).

We observed frequent use of abbreviations in the consent forms in our department that can result in misunderstanding and miscommunication when consenting patients for orthopaedic procedures.
Methods: We completed an audit cycle starting by reviewing a total of 350 consent forms retrospectively in level one trauma centres in October-November of 2019 for different orthopaedic trauma procedures.
