Capsular contracture as a result of the foreign body response (FBR) is a common issue after implant-based breast reconstruction, affecting up to 20% of patients. New evidence suggests that tamoxifen may mitigate the FBR. C57BL/6 female mice were treated with daily tamoxifen or control injections and implanted with bilateral silicone implants in the submammary glandular plane.

Background: After internal carotid artery (ICA) injury during endoscopic skull base surgery, the majority of patients undergo ICA embolization or stenting to treat active extravasation or pseudoaneurysm development. However, management practices when embolization or stenting is not required have not been well described. The objective of this study was to determine how patients with ICA injury but no embolization, stenting, or ligation do long-term and ascertain the reconstruction methods utilized.

Coronaviruses (CoVs), a subfamily of coronavirinae, are a panel of single-stranded RNA virus. Human coronavirus (HCoV) strains (HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-HKU1, HCoV-NL63) usually cause mild upper respiratory diseases and are believed to be harmless. However, other HCoVs, associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome, Middle East respiratory syndrome, and COVID-19, have been identified as important pathogens due to their potent infectivity and lethality worldwide.

Methods: An electronic questionnaire was sent to all licensed, practicing EMS professionals in South Carolina.

Background Vascular smooth muscle cell phenotypic change and consequential intimal hyperplasia (IH) cause arterial stenosis and posttreatment restenosis. Smad3 is a master transcription factor, yet its underlying functional mechanisms in this disease context are not well defined. Methods and Results In cultured smooth muscle cells, Smad3 silencing and overexpression respectively reduced and increased the mRNA and protein of NRP2 (neuropilin 2), a recently reported pro-IH signaling factor.

Background: The 5-year survival of pancreatic adenocarcinoma with surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy is below 25%. The original Gastrointestinal Tumor Study Group (GITSG) adjuvant study demonstrated a survival benefit attributed to weekly intravenous boluses of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for 2 years in addition to chemoradiation compared to surgery alone. In theory, the prolonged exposure to therapy could maintain pressure on dormant cancer cells that remain in G0 arrest and kill them as they infrequently enter the G1/S phase.
