Similar to other invasive species, stone moroko is extending its global distribution. The present study aimed to assess the reproductive potential of stone moroko fish in a new habitat in Poland based on analysing the sexual cycle and fecundity. Fish morphometric data, age, and gonadal structures were analysed.

Article Synopsis
  • Face masks were mandated in Poland starting April 10, 2020, as a measure against COVID-19, with regulations easing by May 29, 2020, focusing on indoor settings.
  • A study involving 82 medical students observed mask use in public spaces across 13 regions on three different dates in May 2020, recording behavior of 2,353 individuals.
  • Results showed mask usage was high initially (73.6%) but decreased over time (65.7%); women were more likely to wear masks correctly than men, and many were found wearing masks improperly (like having uncovered noses or masks around their necks).

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Poland assessed the uptake of meningococcal vaccination (MV) among children under five and examined parental knowledge and attitudes toward invasive meningococcal disease (IMD).
  • Conducted in 2018 with 350 parents from Szczecin, the study found a 29.5% MV uptake and that most parents received knowledge about IMD primarily from medical staff and media, but self-assessment of knowledge was low (only 18.8% rated themselves as knowledgeable).
  • The study highlighted that parents' knowledge about IMD was associated with higher education levels, prior information received, and urban residency, suggesting a need for targeted awareness campaigns to improve vaccination rates and education, especially for less informed parents.

Unlabelled: Surgical staff might be considered at most risk of accidental viral infection due to their higher exposure to blood.

Aim: To evaluate surgical staff concerns about occupational HIV infection, to determine contributing factors, to assess their sero-status regarding this pathogen, and the frequency of the Δ32 allele of the CCR5 gene.

Methods: With the use of a self-administered anonymous questionnaire a cross-sectional sero-survey was conducted from February 2009-January 2010 among doctors/nurses from the surgical/ gynaecological wards of 16 randomly selected hospitals in Western Pomerania, Poland.

The highly invasive Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) was studied to reveal the genetic relationship between three none self-sustainable population within the Polish Oder and Vistula River and Lake Vänern in Sweden. Crabs from self-sustainable populations were collected from the Elbe River (Germany), San Francisco Bay (USA) and five Asian river estuaries. Both parsimony and maximum likelihood analysis of the nuclear ITS 1 and ITS 2 regions reveal a similar topological pattern.

Carbon-modified TiO2 for photocatalysis.

Nanoscale Res Lett

April 2012

Institute of Chemical and Environment Engineering, Westpomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Pulaskiego 10, Szczecin, 70-322, Poland.

Here we present a method to produce TiO2 nanocrystals coated by thin layer of graphitic carbon. The coating process was prepared via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with acetylene used as a carbon feedstock with TiO2 used as a substrate. Different temperatures (400°C and 500°C) and times (10, 20, and 60 s) of reaction were explored.

The aim of the conducted study was to evaluate correlation between genotypes and PRKAG3 compound genotypes and milk production traits (yield of milk, milk fat and milk protein, and protein and fat content in milk). The study covered a herd of 180 Jersey cows. PCR-RFLP method was used for genotyping.

Plasma concentration of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in chinchilla with and without tooth overgrowth.

Folia Biol (Krakow)

June 2010

Department of Physiological Chemistry, Faculty of Biotechnology and Animal Breeding, Westpomeranian University of Technology, Dr. Judyma 26,71-466 Szczecin, Poland.

The aim of the study was to identify the causes underlying overgrowth of incisors in chinchillas through an analysis of selected plasma electrolyte concentrations, with particular consideration of minerals involved in the formation of osseous tissue, i.e., Ca, Mg, and P.

By-products of oxygen metabolism are the element's reactive species and their derivaties. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and particularly free oxygen radicals (FOR) are characterized by high chemical activity. They can easily react with cell macromolecules (lipids, protein and DNA), leading to change of their structure and function and finally to the cell death and tissue damage.

The study included 1083 Polish Holstein-Friesian strain Black-and-White cows. The genetic structure of the herd was determined on the basis of polymorphism within the aromatase gene (CYP19/Cfr 13I and CYP19/PvuII). Genotypes were identified by the PCR-RFLP method.

Association between leptin gene polymorphisms and growth traits in Limousin cattle.

Genetika

June 2009

Department of Genetics and Animal Breeding, Westpomeranian University of Technology, 71-466 Szczecin, Poland.

A total of 129 Limousin calves were used to investigate how leptin gene polymorphisms affect growth traits, such as body weight, average daily gain, wither height, sacrum height and chest girth in beef cattle. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped, including the Sau3AI polymorphism in intron 2 and the A59V polymorphism in exon 3. The genotype and allele frequencies for each SNP and the haplotype frequencies for both SNPs were estimated in the studied herd.
