Introduction: In patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip, occurrence of lymph node metastasis (LNM) is more frequent than in other cutaneous head and neck SCCs. The aim of this study was to identify predictive factors for LNM in SCC of the lip and to establish a prediction model identifying patients at high LNM risk.
Materials And Methods: Tumor characteristics of 326 patients with lip SCC were analyzed retrospectively to assess differences between the LNM group and controls.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Traditionally and nowadays preparations from two xerophytic plants, the ice plant and cactus pear are used in dermatologic and cosmetic preparations. In spite of their daily use, little is known concerning the bioactivity of such extracts on skin cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pressed juices from ice plant (McP) and two cactus pear polysaccharides (cold water soluble, NwPS; non swelling pectin, NPec) on the cell physiology of normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and HaCaT-keratinocytes due to composition, concentration and incubation time.

This review summarizes current knowledge about the role of hereditary hypercoagulation factors predisposing to thrombophilia-associated recurrent fetal loss. Thrombophilias are a major cause of adverse pregnancy outcome, playing a role in the etiology of up to 40% of cases worldwide. Hereditary thrombophilic predispositions to recurrent pregnancy wastage include genetic lesions in blood coagulation factors II and V as well as natural anticoagulants antithrombin, protein C, and protein S.

Polycystin-1 is the gene product of PKD1, the first gene identified to be causative for the condition of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Mutations in PKD1 are responsible for the majority of ADPKD cases worldwide. Polycystin-1 is a protein of the transient receptor potential channels superfamily, with 11 transmembrane spans and an extracellular N-terminal region of approximately 3109 amino acid residues, harboring multiple putative ligand binding domains.

Unlabelled: The software tool MAPSP allows the combinatorial prediction of novel short peptides such as hormones with common sequence features. In addition, it assists in de novo sequencing in general. The tool was designed for use in conjunction with the analytical identification method of mass spectrometry (MS) and it can considerably speed-up the analysis of unknowns.

During a routine dissection course at the University of Muenster (Germany) an unusual course of the lingual nerve was found with entrapment of the nerve between a widely ossified pterygospinous ligament and the medial pterygoid muscle. Furthermore, the nerve's mobility was restricted by a more distal anastomosis with the inferior alveolar nerve. Although incomplete or complete ossification of the pterygospinous ligament is not uncommon, the combination with a medial course of the lingual nerve has not been described before.

Osteochondromas can be complicated by mechanical irritation, compression or injury of adjacent structures, fracture, malignant transformation, and postoperative recurrence. Magnetic resonance imaging represents the most valuable imaging modality in symptomatic cases, because it can demonstrate typical features of associated soft tissue pathology, which can be differentiated from malignant transformation. Reactive bursae formation presents as an overlying fluid collection with peripheral contrast enhancement.
