Respiratory infections with newly emerging zoonotic viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of COVID-19, often lead to the perturbation of the human innate and adaptive immune responses causing severe disease with high mortality. The responsible mechanisms are commonly virus-specific and often include either over-activated or delayed local interferon responses, which facilitate efficient viral replication in the primary target organ, systemic viral spread, and rapid onset of organ-specific and harmful inflammatory responses. Despite the distinct replication strategies, human infections with SARS-CoV-2 and highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses demonstrate remarkable similarities and differences regarding the mechanisms of immune induction, disease dynamics, as well as the long-term sequelae, which will be discussed in this review.

Several studies have pointed to retinal involvement in COVID-19, yet many questions remain regarding the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to infect and replicate in retinal cells and its effects on the retina. Here, we have used human pluripotent stem cell-derived retinal organoids to study retinal infection by SARS-CoV-2. Indeed, SARS-CoV-2 can infect and replicate in retinal organoids, as it is shown to infect different retinal lineages, such as retinal ganglion cells and photoreceptors.

Four-and-a-half LIM domains protein 2 (FHL2) is an anti-hypertrophic adaptor protein that regulates cardiac myocyte signalling and function. Herein, we identified cardiomyopathy-associated 5 (CMYA5) as a novel FHL2 interaction partner in cardiac myocytes. Type I interferons (IFN-I) exert pleiotropic biological effects during viral infections, balancing virus control versus immune-mediated pathologies, and have been successfully employed for the treatment of viral diseases. Humans express 12 IFN-alpha (α) subtypes, which activate downstream signaling cascades and result in distinct patterns of immune responses and differential antiviral responses. Inborn errors in IFN-I immunity and the presence of anti-IFN autoantibodies account for very severe courses of COVID-19; therefore, early administration of IFN-I may be protective against life-threatening disease.

The fragment was fixed by a customized sled including an angular stable tibia plate to evaluate step-offs from 0 mm to 8 mm in 1mm increments.

The major challenge in the treatment of autoimmune diseases is the restoration of the impaired peripheral immune tolerance that always accompanies the development of such diseases. Here, we show that small splenic peptides (SSPs) of whole spleen extract efficiently suppress the development of psoriatic arthritis in vivo, even in the presence of sustained levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. SSPs target dendritic cells (DCs) and convert them into tolerogenic cells, which in turn differentiate naive CD4 cells into Foxp3-expressing T regulatory cells (Tregs).
