: Despite its estimated high prevalence among women and increasing awareness, lipedema remains under-investigated. Ignoring its debilitating nature, surgical treatment for this condition is frequently covered by health insurance only in advanced stages and after the exhaustion of conservative therapies. : A total of 1015 patients with lipedema were recruited via social media platforms.

(1) Background: In this study, the intraoperative fluorescence behavior of brain metastases after the administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) was analyzed. The aim was to investigate whether the resection of brain metastases using 5-ALA fluorescence also leads to a more complete resections and thus to a prolongation of survival; (2) Methods: The following variables have been considered: age, sex, number of metastases, localization, involvement of eloquent area, correlation between fluorescence and primary tumor/subtype, resection, and survival time. The influence on the degree of resection was determined with a control MRI within the first three postoperative days; (3) Results: Brain metastases fluoresced in 57.

Objective: This study investigates whether psychological well-being in post-bariatric patients seeking body contouring procedures differs from those who do not seek body contouring procedures, those who have already undergone body contouring procedures, and those who are unsure about body contouring procedures.
Methods: An anonymous, nonrandomized, cross-sectional survey study was designed. Psychological well-being of four groups of post-bariatric-patients (undergone body contouring procedures, seeking body contouring procedures, not seeking body contouring procedures, unsure about body contouring procedures) were compared.

(1) Background: Infections in deep brain stimulation (DBS) hardware, while an undesired complication of DBS surgeries, can be effectively addressed. Minor infections are typically treated with wound revision and IV antibiotics. However, when visible hardware infection occurs, most centers opt for complete removal, leaving the patient in a preoperative state and necessitating post-removal care.

Rice is a staple food and known to accumulate inorganic arsenic (iAs), which is a class 1 carcinogen to humans. Arsenic field-deployable method kits, designed for water testing, are able to screen iAs in rice, to assure food safety and quick decision-making without the need for laboratory analysis. For the arsenic extraction within the field method, nitric acid is used.

Conduction restoration in second- and third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block after revascularization in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) setting is well established, however this is not the case in non-ACS setting. We present a case of a patient referred for permanent pacemaker implantation, due to high degree AV block (HAVB), who restored his conduction possibly due to targeted revascularization. Thus, this case sheds insight in the reversibility potential of HAVB after revascularization in non-ACS patients, which although signified in current literature, is still far from being a recommendation, due to lack of robust scientific confirmation.

Influenza A virus (IAV), like any other virus, provokes considerable modifications of its host cell's metabolism. This includes a substantial increase in the uptake as well as the metabolization of glucose. Although it is known for quite some time that suppression of glucose metabolism restricts virus replication, the exact molecular impact on the viral life cycle remained enigmatic so far.

Background: Lipedema is a common chronic fat distribution disorder often aligned with pain and reduced quality of life affecting 6-10% of the female population. Although lipedema has acquired more scientific attention in the last decade, validated diagnosis and treatment still remain challenging for specialists.
Patients And Methods: In this article we evaluate the effect of liposuction on appearance, pain and coexisting diseases of 860 patients with lipedema.

Orthomyxo- and bunyaviruses steal the 5' cap portion of host RNAs to prime their own transcription in a process called "cap snatching." We report that RNA modification of the cap portion by host 2'-O-ribose methyltransferase 1 (MTr1) is essential for the initiation of influenza A and B virus replication, but not for other cap-snatching viruses. We identified with in silico compound screening and functional analysis a derivative of a natural product from , called trifluoromethyl-tubercidin (TFMT), that inhibits MTr1 through interaction at its -adenosyl-l-methionine binding pocket to restrict influenza virus replication.

Respiratory infections with newly emerging zoonotic viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of COVID-19, often lead to the perturbation of the human innate and adaptive immune responses causing severe disease with high mortality. The responsible mechanisms are commonly virus-specific and often include either over-activated or delayed local interferon responses, which facilitate efficient viral replication in the primary target organ, systemic viral spread, and rapid onset of organ-specific and harmful inflammatory responses. Despite the distinct replication strategies, human infections with SARS-CoV-2 and highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses demonstrate remarkable similarities and differences regarding the mechanisms of immune induction, disease dynamics, as well as the long-term sequelae, which will be discussed in this review.

Female sex is increasingly associated with a loss of bone mass during aging and an increased risk of developing nonunion fractures. Hormonal factors and cell-intrinsic mechanisms are suggested to drive these sexual dimorphisms, although underlying molecular mechanisms are still a matter of debate. Here, we observed a decreased capacity of calvarial bone recovery in female rats and a profound sexually dimorphic osteogenic differentiation in human adult neural crest-derived stem cells (NCSCs).

Background: Central airway obstruction (CAO) is one of the most challenging, potentially lethal complications in malignant and benign respiratory diseases. Worsening dyspnea is also a relevant cause for reduced quality of life in such patients. Here, we present our data on the application of covered, self-expanding Y-carina nitinol stents due to benign and malignant diseases.

Although breast surgeries for aesthetic or reconstructive purposes are regularly performed, no focus has been laid on establishing an adequate and reliable volumetry method. While CT and MRI scan represent methods that are already in clinical use, the 3D scan is a novel and promising tool, easy to use with the possibility to measure the anatomic breast volume in an upright position. Nevertheless, its reliability is broadly underinvestigated.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing posttraumatic step-offs after lateral tibial plateau fracture reduction on the intra-articular pressure.
Materials And Methods: In eight fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees with intact menisci, a standardized sagittal osteotomy of the lateral tibial condyle was performed as an OTA/AO type 41-B1 fracture-model. The fragment was fixed by a customized sled including an angular stable tibia plate to evaluate step-offs from 0 mm to 8 mm in 1mm increments.

Respiratory viruses are known to be the most frequent causative mediators of lung infections in humans, bearing significant impact on the host cell signaling machinery due to their host-dependency for efficient replication. Certain cellular functions are actively induced by respiratory viruses for their own benefit. This includes metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, fatty acid synthesis (FAS) and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, among others, which are modified during viral infections.

Introduction: We reported on the superiority of preoperative Duplex mapping ("Duplex") over audible Dopplers ("Doppler") in anterolateral thigh perforator (ALT) free flaps for upper extremity reconstruction. To corroborate our findings on a larger cohort, we conducted this present study focusing on surgical efficiency and patient safety.
Methods: 150 consecutive ALT free flaps were divided into 65 cases of preoperative Duplex versus 85 Doppler controls.
