A Feasibility Study of the SAFE Pilot Program: A University-School Board Partnership in Ontario.

The Support and Aid to Families Electronically (SAFE) pilot program was developed through a community-university partnership to support parents of elementary students in Ontario, while providing stable practicums for social work students in the midst of COVID-19 restrictions. The aim of the current study was to examine the feasibility of the SAFE pilot program as a mental health support to families by examining three feasibility objectives: demand, acceptably, and implementation. Qualitative data from interviews, focus groups, and qualitative surveys involving service users, social work students, referring school board and university professionals ( = 37) were examined.

Evaluation of DermSat-7 for Assessing Treatment Satisfaction in Patients with Acne.

Importance: Treatment satisfaction is important to achieving therapeutic success in patients with inflammatory dermatological diseases, such as acne.

Objective: To evaluate the structural validity, internal consistency, and construct validity of the DermSat-7, a questionnaire-based measure of treatment satisfaction, in patients with acne seen in routine clinical practice.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cross-sectional study included adults with acne who were fluent in English and treated at an outpatient clinic at Brigham and Women's Hospital between July 2022 and May 2023.

Factors Influencing Participation in Physical Activity, Sports, and Exercise in Children and Adolescents with Spinal Pain or Spinal Conditions: A Systematic Review and Meta-Ethnography.

Background: Physical activity is an effective treatment for paediatric spinal pain. However, participation rates remain low and review evidence is needed to establish why. This review identifies factors influencing participation in sports, exercise, and physical activity in those aged 18 or under with spinal pain or spinal conditions.

Biopsychosocial sequelae and recovery trajectories from whiplash injury following a motor vehicle collision.

Background Context: Five out of 10 injured in a motor vehicle collision (MVC) will develop persistent pain and disability. It is unclear if prolonged symptoms are related to peritraumatic pain/disability, psychological distress, muscle fat, lower extremity weakness.

Purpose: To test if widespread muscle fat infiltration (MFI) was (1) unique to those with poor recovery, (2) present in the peritraumatic stage, (3) related to known risk factors.

Evaluation of Psychological Wellbeing and Social Impact of Combined Facial and Truncal Acne: a Multi-national, Mixed-Methods Study.

Introduction: Half of the individuals with facial acne develop truncal acne, but the impact of combined facial and truncal acne (CA) on patients' quality of life is poorly researched.

Methods: A 60-min interview of 30 participants with CA was conducted that formed the basis for a cross-sectional survey of 694 adolescents and adults with CA.

Results: The main themes identified from the qualitative interviews among CA subjects included acceptability to self and others, social functioning and emotional wellbeing.

Projective Personification Approach to the Experience of People With Acne and Acne Scarring-Expressing the Unspoken.

Importance: The association of acne with emotional and social well-being is not limited to active acne because acne scarring can extend long after cessation of active lesions.

Objective: To explore the psychosocial burden of facial and truncal acne (FTA) and acne scars (AS) in a spontaneous manner using qualitative research.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This qualitative study recruited participants via local panels.

Mood Disturbances Across the Continuum of Care Based on Self-Report and Clinician Rated Measures in the interRAI Suite of Assessment Instruments.

Background: Mood disturbance is a pervasive problem affecting persons of all ages in the general population and the subset of those receiving services from different health care providers. interRAI assessment instruments comprise an integrated health information system providing a common approach to comprehensive assessment of the strengths, preferences and needs of persons with complex needs across the continuum of care.

Objective: Our objective was to create new mood scales for use with the full suite of interRAI assessments including a composite version with both clinician-rated and self-reported items as well as a self-report only version.

Asthma in the Americas: An Update: A Joint Perspective from the Brazilian Thoracic Society, Canadian Thoracic Society, Latin American Thoracic Society, and American Thoracic Society.

Asthma affects a large number of people living in the Americas, a vast and diverse geographic region comprising 35 nations in the Caribbean and North, Central, and South America. The marked variability in the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality from asthma across and within nations in the Americas offers a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of the risk factors and management of asthma phenotypes and endotypes in children and adults. Moreover, a better assessment of the causes and treatment of asthma in less economically developed regions in the Americas would help diagnose and treat individuals migrating from those areas to Canada and the United States.

Background: Most people with acne are at risk of developing acne scars, but the impact of these scars on patients' quality of life is poorly researched.

Objective: To assess the perspective of patients with acne scars and the impact of these scars on their emotional well-being and social functioning.

Methods: A 60-minute interview of 30 adults with acne scars informed and contextualized the development of a cross-sectional survey of 723 adults with atrophic acne scars.

The impact of financial development on carbon dioxide emissions in Jamaica.

We determine the possible impacts of changes in financial development on carbon dioxide (CO) emissions in Jamaica for the period 1980 to 2018, with special attention given to the possible existence of asymmetries in this relationship. There are three major findings. First, there is a unique cointegrating relationship among the variables where CO emissions are a function of financial development, real domestic economic activity, and trade openness.

Impact of facial and truncal acne on quality of life: A multi-country population-based survey.

Background: Acne confers an increased risk of physical, psychiatric, and psychosocial sequelae, potentially affecting multiple dimensions of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Morbidity associated with truncal acne is poorly understood.

Objective: To determine how severity and location of acne lesions impact the HRQoL of those who suffer from it.

A long-term record of early to mid-Paleozoic marine redox change.

The extent to which Paleozoic oceans differed from Neoproterozoic oceans and the causal relationship between biological evolution and changing environmental conditions are heavily debated. Here, we report a nearly continuous record of seafloor redox change from the deep-water upper Cambrian to Middle Devonian Road River Group of Yukon, Canada. Bottom waters were largely anoxic in the Richardson trough during the entirety of Road River Group deposition, while independent evidence from iron speciation and Mo/U ratios show that the biogeochemical nature of anoxia changed through time.

Achieving Influenza Vaccine Uptake Target in Canada via a Pharmacy-Led Telephone Discussion during the 2019-2020 Season.

Older adults (≥65 years) are at elevated risk of influenza-related morbidity and mortality. Many developed countries do not achieve the World Health Organization influenza immunization target of 75% in people ≥65 years. We aimed to determine whether a brief pharmacy phone call could increase vaccine uptake of standard and enhanced influenza.

Implicit biases describe mental associations that affect our actions in an unconscious manner. We can hold certain implicit biases regarding members of certain social groups. Such biases can perpetuate health disparities by widening inequity and decreasing trust in both healthcare and medical education.

Reliability and concurrent validity of three-dimensional ultrasound for quantifying knee cartilage volume.

Objective: The goal of this study was to test the reliability and validity of a handheld mechanical three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound (US) device for quantifying femoral articular cartilage (FAC) against the current clinical standard of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Design: Bilateral knee images of 25 healthy volunteers were acquired with 3D US and 3.0 T MRI.

Cost impact of introducing a treatment escalation/limitation plan during patients' last hospital admission before death.

Objective: A recent study found that the use of a treatment escalation/limitation plan (TELP) was associated with a significant reduction in non-beneficial interventions (NBIs) and harms in patients admitted acutely who subsequently died. We quantify the economic benefit of the use of a TELP.

Design: NBIs were micro-costed.

Simultaneous δ H and δ O analyses of water inclusions in halite with off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy.

Stable isotope compositions of ancient halite fluid inclusions have been recognized to be valuable tools for reconstructing past environments. Nevertheless, in order to better understand the genesis of halite deposits, it could be of great interest to combine both δ H and δ O measurements of the water trapped as inclusions in the defects of the mineral lattice. We developed a method combining off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) connected on line with a modified elemental analyzer (EA-OA-ICOS) to perform those measurements.

Virus interruptus: An Arendtian exploration of political world-building in pandemic times.

Building upon a series of blog posts and conversations, two feminist scholars explore how political community, trust, responsibility and solidarity are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We explore the ways in which we can engage in political world-building during pandemic times through the work of Hannah Arendt. Following Arendt's notion of the world as the space for human togetherness, we ask: how can we respond to COVID-19's interruptions to the familiarity of daily life and our relationship to public space? By extending relational accounts of public health and organizational ethics, we critique a narrow view of solidarity that focuses on individual compliance with public health directives.

Trends in Glaucoma Filtration Procedures: A Retrospective Administrative Health Records Analysis Over a 13-Year Period in Canada.

Background: Glaucoma surgical management has evolved significantly with the introduction of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. Our aim was to evaluate trends in Canadian glaucoma surgery billing code usage as a surrogate index of the current impact of this new technology in Canada's publicly funded health-care system.

Methods: Retrospective administrative health records analysis of all patients who underwent a publicly funded glaucoma filtration procedure from January 2003 to December 2016 in the 6 largest Canadian provinces.

The Embodiment of Objects: Review, Analysis, and Future Directions.

Here we offer a thorough review of the empirical literature on the conditions under which an object, such as a tool or a prosthetic (whether real or virtual), can be experienced as being in some sense a part or extension of one's body. We discuss this literature both from the standpoint of the apparent malleability of our body representations, and also from within the framework of radical embodied cognition, which understands the phenomenon to result not from an alteration to a representation, but rather from the achievement of a certain kind of sensory/motor coupling. We highlight both the tensions between these frameworks, and also areas where they can productively complement one another for future research.

Methods for Post Hoc Quantitative Computed Tomography Bone Density Calibration: Phantom-Only and Regression.

Quantitative computed tomography (qCT) relies on calibrated bone mineral density data. If a calibration phantom is absent from the CT scan, post hoc calibration becomes necessary. Scanning a calibration phantom after-the-fact and applying that calibration to uncalibrated scans has been used previously.

A new clinical model for facilitating the development of pattern recognition skills in clinical pain assessment.

Common, enigmatic musculoskeletal conditions such as whiplash-associated disorder, myofascial pain syndrome, low back pain, headache, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and rotator cuff pathology, account for significant social, economic, and personal burdens on a global scale. Despite their primacy (and shared sequelae) there remains a paucity of available and effective management options for patients with both acute and chronic conditions. Establishing an accurate prognostic or diagnostic profile on a patient-by-patient basis can challenge the insight of both novice and expert clinicians.
