School social workers are integral to the school mental health workforce and the leading social service providers in educational settings. In recent decades, school social work practice has been largely influenced by the multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) approach, ecological systems views, and the promotion of evidence-based practice. However, none of the existing school social work reviews have examined the latest characteristics and outcomes of school social work services.

Ninety-million Americans suffer metabolic syndrome (MetSyn), increasing the risk of diabetes and poor brain outcomes, including neuropathology linked to lower cerebral blood flow (CBF), predominantly in anterior regions. We tested the hypothesis that total and regional CBF is lower in MetSyn more so in the anterior brain and explored three potential mechanisms. Thirty-four controls (25 ± 5 yr) and 19 MetSyn (30 ± 9 yr), with no history of cardiovascular disease/medications, underwent four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to quantify macrovascular CBF, whereas arterial spin labeling quantified brain perfusion in a subset ( = 38/53).

Central adiposity is associated with greater sympathetic support of blood pressure. β-adrenergic receptors (β-AR) buffer sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction and β-AR-mediated vasodilation is attenuated in preclinical models of obesity. With this information, we hypothesized β-AR vasodilation would be lower in obese compared with normal weight adults.

As interest in the use of copper-based nanomaterials in agriculture continue to increase, research into their exposure effects must expand from short-term, high exposure studies to long-term studies at realistic concentrations. Long-term studies can better elucidate the implications of copper nanomaterial exposure by allowing plants to mature and adapt to higher copper concentrations. In this study, sugarcane plants were grown to maturity in large nursery pots using soils amended with one of the following treatments: Kocide 3000 (Cu(OH)), a nano-sized CuO (nCuO), a bulk-sized CuO (bCuO), copper metal nanoparticles (Cu NP), or CuCl at 20, 40, and 60 mg kg.

There is a well-established, steady trend of religious disaffiliates in the USA. However, little qualitative research has been devoted to documenting the experience of religious disaffiliation or "exiting," specifically in the context of identity reconstruction and well-being. This study investigates an understudied subgroup of exiters-individuals who have left Christian fundamentalist religions.

Cyclooxygenase (COX) is proposed to regulate cerebral blood flow (CBF); however, accurate regional contributions of COX are relatively unknown at baseline and particularly during hypoxia. We hypothesized that COX contributes to both basal and hypoxic cerebral vasodilation, but COX-mediated vasodilation is greater in the posterior versus anterior cerebral circulation. CBF was measured in 9 healthy adults (28 ± 4 yr) during normoxia and isocapnic hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen = 0.

Abiotic stress has become one of the most challenging problems for agriculture as the world population keeps increasing dramatically. Crop stress management using manganese (Mn) compounds has been recently employed to reduce the negative effects caused by drought, harsh temperature, and salinity. In response to abiotic stress, an adequate supply of Mn has shown to remediate plant manganese deficiency, induce Mn superoxide dismutase at the transcriptional level to face reactive oxygen species production, and stimulate manganese-dependent proteins to maintain cell integrity.

Despite the low bond strength of the oxygen-oxygen bond, organic peroxides are often surprisingly resistant to cleavage by nucleophiles and reductants. As a result, achieving decomposition under mild conditions can be challenging. Herein, we explore the reactivity of a selection of peroxides toward thiolates, phenyl selenide, Fe(II) salts, and iron thiolates.

Aim: The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human cerebral blood flow (CBF) during hypoxia is largely unknown. Additionally, it is unknown whether ROS interact with cyclooxygenase-derived signals during hypoxia to increase CBF. We hypothesized ROS inhibition would reduce hypoxic CBF, and combined inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) and ROS would decrease hypoxic CBF more than ROS suppression alone.

Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF MS) has been used routinely over the past decade in clinical microbiology laboratories to rapidly characterize diverse microorganisms of medical importance both at the genus and species levels. Currently, there is keen interest in applying MALDI-TOF MS at taxonomic levels beyond species and to characterize environmental isolates. We constructed a model system consisting of 19 isolates of obtained from biofilm communities indigenous to diverse substrates (concrete, leaf tissue, metal, and wood) in the Fox River - Lake Winnebago system of Wisconsin to: (1) develop rapid sample preparation methods that produce high quality, reproducible MALDI-TOF spectra and (2) compare the performance of MALDI-TOF MS-based profiling to common DNA-based approaches including 16S rRNA sequencing and genomic diversity by BOX-A1R fingerprinting.

We developed adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) vectors displaying the sigma 1 protein from reovirus as mucosal vaccines. Ad5-sigma retargets to JAM-1 and sialic acid, but has 40-fold reduced gene delivery when compared to Ad5. While weaker at transduction, Ad5-sigma generates stronger T cell responses than Ad5 when used for mucosal immunization.

The high levels of preexisting immunity against Adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) have deemed Ad5 unusable for translation as a human vaccine vector. Low seroprevalent alternative viral vectors may be less impacted by preexisting immunity, but they may also have significantly different phenotypes from that of Ad5. In this study we compare species D Ads (26, 28, and 48) to the species C Ad5.

Although clotrimazole was first used against fungal infections, a body of research was later developed indicating that this drug has anticancer properties as well. The mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of mitochondrial-bound glycolytic enzymes and calmodulin, which starves cancer cells of energy. Clotrimazole and its derivatives have been shown to decrease rates of cancer cell proliferation, induce G1 phase arrest, and promote pro-apoptotic factors, which lead to cell death.
