Cytoskeleton-associated protein 2-like (CKAP2L) is a paralogue of cytoskeleton-associated protein 2 (CKAP2). We characterized the expression pattern, subcellular localization, and microtubule-stabilizing properties of human CKAP2L. The levels of both CKAP2L transcript and protein were cell cycle phase-dependent, peaking during the G/M phase and relatively high in certain human tissues, including testis, intestine, and spleen.

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) is an economically important species in the western Atlantic and its climate-driven range shift northward along the east coast of the United States is well documented. The thermal tolerance of lab-reared postlarvae of this species has been extensively investigated to better understand settlement and recruitment dynamics. However, there have been few studies focused on wild-caught postlarvae, and even fewer that have analyzed lab-rearing conditions in context of diet.

The word minority, when used incorrectly, is a condescending term that segregates, inaccurately represents groups as being smaller or less important, and fuels microaggressions. Scientific societies and other institutions have normalized using the word minority, or the "M word," to refer to members of underrepresented groups in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The message put forth using the term minority often directly conflicts with the inclusive agenda these societies seek to enact.

In recent years there has been much interest in investigating the extent to which social status or prestige are related to an individual's degree of integration in social networks. It has been shown that, among hunter-gatherers, social characteristics of an individual based on social status or prestige, such foraging reputation, friendship popularity, and pro-social reputation, can influence the extent to which an individual is embedded in a social network. However, little is known regarding the extent to which height, a physical trait that in Western societies is often associated with social status, is associated in integration in social networks among small-scale hunter gatherers.

Cholesterol Lowering in Older Adults: Should We Wait for Further Evidence?

Curr Atheroscler Rep

September 2024

New England GRECC (Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center), VA Boston Healthcare System, 150 S Huntington St, Boston, MA, 02130, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The review addresses the unclear guidelines for lipid-lowering therapies (LLT) in adults aged 75 and older, particularly focusing on low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) as a predictor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).
  • It highlights the complexity of the relationship between LDL-C levels and mortality in older adults, emphasizing the need for more geriatric-specific risk assessment tools and the importance of shared decision-making regarding LLT.
  • The review also suggests that initial LLT may be beneficial for older adults without ASCVD, with current trials needed to clarify the approach for statins and deprescribing strategies among this age group.
