The "secondhit" pathway is responsible for biallelic inactivation of many tumor suppressors, where a pathogenic germline allele is joined by somatic mutation of the remaining functional allele. The mechanisms are unresolved, but the human PKD1 tumor suppressor is a good experimental model for identifying the molecular determinants. Inactivation of PKD1 results in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, a very common disorder characterized by the accumulation of fluid-filled cysts and end-stage renal disease.

Graphical models have been widely used to explicitly capture the statistical relationships among the variables of interest in the form of a graph. The central question in these models is to infer significant conditional dependencies or independencies from high-dimensional data. In the current literature, it is common to assume that the high-dimensional data come from a homogeneous source and follow a parametric graphical model.

We discuss a case of meningitis caused by infection in a previously healthy elderly male who presented with altered mental status and new-onset seizures requiring intensive care. An open wound had served as an entry point for the infectious organism. After 25 days of treatment with meropenem, he recovered with persistent functional limitations and was discharged.

Background Preventive measures are critical in avoiding and limiting the severity of diseases. Key lifestyle behaviors include sleep hygiene, habitual exercise, a healthy diet, and avoidance of risky substances, particularly the use of tobacco. The transtheoretical model (TTM) of change suggests that patients can move towards healthful changes through education.

The urge to adopt cleaner technologies drives the search for novel and sustainable materials such as Hydrophobic Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (HNADESs), a new class of green solvents characterized by their low toxicity, biodegradability, and tunable properties, aiming to be applied in various fields for handling non-polar substances. In this work, the solubilization of hydrocarbons in type V HNADESs (non-ionic organic molecules) formed by mixing carvone, a natural monoterpenoid, with organic acids (hexanoic to decanoic acids) is examined by applying both experimental and theoretical approaches. The synthesis and physicochemical characterization of different HNADESs allowed us to tailor their properties, aiming for optimal interactions with desired hydrocarbons.

Reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels has been shown to reduce the risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Statins are the foundation of LDL-C lowering therapy with other non-statin agents used in circumstances where goal LDL-C levels are not reached or owing to intolerance to adverse effects of statins. In 2003, the discovery of the role of the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) system in promoting elevated LDL-C levels led to new avenues of drug development to achieve target LDL-C.

Background: Richter's transformation (RT) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is associated with poor prognosis and requires prompt modifications in patient care. CLL patients are susceptible to severe infections due to immune dysregulation induced by their malignancy and immunosuppressive therapies.
Case Presentation: We present a case of a 63-year-old man with CLL who previously achieved remission and presented with a right inguinal mass.

Background: The COVID pandemic accelerated the adoption of telehealth. Long-term implications for continued telehealth use on a large scale in primary care are still emerging, and the key to this understanding is how telehealth adoption impacts the delivery of health care.
Objectives: Our objective was to quantify how telehealth adoption during the pandemic impacted patients' access to healthcare and the usage patterns of different access modalities (in-office, audio, and video).

Introduction: Nursing is a moral endeavor that embodies humanitarian responses to human suffering. Nurses understand the impact of direct and indirect violence on the health of individuals and communities around the world. The intersections of health, justice, caring, and peace are important considerations for the profession.

Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC), a thin-film material, is emerging as a promising alternative for durable surfaces due to its eco-friendly application process. This study evaluated the use of thin-film DLC on the wafer surface of gravure cylinders for roll-to-roll printing of fine-line electrodes and microtext patterns, specifically for applications in flexible electronics and graphics security. Results suggested that using thin film DLC on the wafer surface allows reliable reproduction of isometric grids and line structures with widths of 15, 20, and 30 µm, as well as solid electrodes.

Purpose: To investigate the utility of a 15-minute online module to improve the self-confidence and knowledge of neurology trainees when screening an EEG.
Methods: We developed a fast, convenient, and accessible 15-minute online module to teach basic concepts of EEG screening using a five-step approach. To assess the efficacy of the module among neurology trainees, three surveys were developed.

The availability of an effective vaccine does not equate to its use; its effectiveness primarily depends on vaccine acceptance by the targeted population. Despite the rapid development and widespread access to the COVID-19 vaccine, herd immunity is yet to be achieved, with vaccine hesitancy as a major barrier. This study sought to systematically assess the beliefs, attitudes, and acceptance towards COVID-19 vaccines, including factors contributing to vaccination hesitancy in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

Background: Falls are a significant health care concern for older adults in the United States. Audiologists are health care providers who are experts in hearing and vestibular dysfunctions, two areas known to be risk factors for falls. It is not known whether audiology patients consider audiology services to be related to falls or whether they consider audiologists to be a viable resource related to fall-related health care.

Superoxide concentration and tissue regeneration in planarians exhibit a complex non-monotonic dependence on the strength of an applied weak magnetic field. While this is difficult to understand based on classical physics, a recently proposed quantum model based on a flavin-superoxide radical pair mechanism could replicate the previously observed superoxide concentrations. However, this model also predicts increased superoxide concentrations for both lower and higher fields.

Human trafficking in the child and adolescent is a global public health crisis that can be divided into sex trafficking, labor trafficking and organ trafficking. This discussion considers basic terminology in this area, sociodemographic information on these victims, negative effects or repercussions from such egregious actions forced on the victims, issues of screening for healthcare providers based on specific risk factors/indicators, and information regarding screening tools as well as management principles for healthcare professionals. These trafficked persons are seen in varied practice settings such as primary care offices, emergency departments, street medicine operations, and others.

Habitat transitions have shaped the evolutionary trajectory of many clades. Sea catfishes (Ariidae) have repeatedly undergone ecological transitions, including colonizing freshwaters from marine environments, leading to an adaptive radiation in Australia and New Guinea alongside non-radiating freshwater lineages elsewhere. Here, we generate and analyze one long-read reference genome and 66 short-read whole genome assemblies, in conjunction with genomic data for 54 additional species.
