This study examined the relation of learning disabilities (LD) and gender with emotional intelligence in 128 college students. Fifty-four students with LD (32 men and 22 women) and 74 without LD (34 men and 40 women) attending two colleges and one university participated in the study. Emotional intelligence was assessed using the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i; BarOn,1997), a self-report instrument designed to measure interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, stress management, adaptability, and general mood.

The thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of quartz of various origins were measured under two different conditions, (1) unannealed samples and (2) samples annealed at 500 degrees C and 900 degrees C. The different glow curves obtained were analysed using first order kinetics and glow curve deconvolution (GCD) analysis. The comparison of the glow curves obtained was mainly concentrated in studying the sensitivities of the glow peaks as a function of the annealing temperature, and in obtaining the kinetic parameters of the glow peak at '110 degrees C'.

This paper explores the possibility of using commercial software for thermoluminescence glow curve deconvolution (GCD) analysis. The program PEAKFIT has been used to perform GCD analysis of complex glow curves of quartz and dosimetric materials. First-order TL peaks were represented successfully using the Weibull distribution function.

Using data from two previous studies, the current study tested the assumptions in the Triangular Theory of Love about changes in intimacy, passion, and commitment over time. Using a cross-sectional design, the study examined differences in the three components among 446 romantically involved individuals who were either casually dating, exclusively dating, engaged, or married. In support for the assumptions in the Triangular Theory specifically, analyses indicated significant negative partial correlations between intimacy and relationship length as well as between passion and relationship length.

Results of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for more than 200 nonnucleoside inhibitors of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (NNRTIs) representing eight diverse chemotypes have been correlated with their anti-HIV activities in an effort to establish simulation protocols and methods that can be used in the development of more effective drugs. Each inhibitor was modeled in a complex with the protein and by itself in water, and potentially useful descriptors of binding affinity were collected during the MC simulations. A viable regression equation was obtained for each data set using an extended linear response approach, which yielded r(2) values between 0.

Objective: To provide evidence relevant to developmentally sensitive intervention and prevention of adolescents' psychosocial distress associated with treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Methods: We used self-reports on the Diabetes Quality of Life and SCL-90-R inventories administered at baseline, 1, and 3 years following adolescents' (n = 224) entry into the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial.

Results: Initiation of intensive treatment in early adolescence was associated with increasing school dissatisfaction; initiation in later adolescence resulted in marginal elevations in psychological distress.

Controversy surrounds the use of posted restaurant inspection scores and grades. There is much debate about how well a score or grade conveys risks to potential diners, and questions remain about how the public interprets posted scores and grades, regardless of how they are derived. To determine how such scores and grades are perceived, the authors surveyed a sample of Maryland college students and food safety professionals about what a posted inspection score of 86 means and what a letter grade of C means.

A new thermoluminescence glow curve deconvolution (GCD) function is introduced which accurately describes second order thermoluminescence (TL) curves. The logistic asymmetric (LA) statistical probability function is used with the function variables being the maximum peak intensity (Im), the temperature of the maximum peak intensity (Tm) and the LA width parameter a2. An analytical expression is derived from which the activation energy E can be calculated as a function of Tm and the LA width parameter a2 with an accuracy of 2% or better.

A new thermoluminescence glow curve deconvolution (GCD) function is introduced which accurately describes first order thermoluminescence (TL) curves. The new GCD function is found to be accurate for first order TL peaks with a wide variety of the values of the TL kinetic parameters E and s. The 3-parameter Weibull probability function is used with the function variables being the maximum peak intensity (Im), the temperature of the maximum peak intensity (Tm) and the Weibull width parameter b.

Background: Gaps exist in the modern literature that describes patterns of development in living groups of actinopterygian fishes. Relatively recent descriptions of development exist for the teleost fishes, bowfin, sturgeon, paddlefish and bichirs. Such literature dealing with the gars is to be found in older work, done approximately a century ago.

Communication Department, Western Maryland College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157, USA.

The Triangular Theory of Love has created much interest among researchers in relational communication. Previous attempts at evaluating the theory have proven problematic. Specifically, the problems centered around the measurement of the theory's three components of intimacy, passion, commitment.

The previous tests of the Triangular Theory of Love have proven problematic, specifically centered on measurement of the three components of Intimacy, Passion, and Commitment. Factor analysis of a new set of measures for 123 women and 110 men indicated support for three distinct factors. Sex differences indicated that women scored significantly higher on Intimacy and Commitment than men.

A review of published studies of deaf mentally ill inpatients is reported. While there are conflicts in the findings of some of the studies, several generalizations seem fairly universal across countries and time periods. For example, the data indicate a greater overall prevalence of mental illness in the deaf population than in the general population as a whole, based on the relative number of each group who are patients in psychiatric hospitals.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in combination with a linear response approach were used to estimate the free energies of binding for a series of 12 TIBO nonnucleoside inhibitors of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. Separate correlations were made for the R6 and S6 absolute conformations of the inhibitors, as well as for the analogous N6-monoprotonated species. Models based upon the neutral unbound inhibitors produced overall better fits to experimental values than did those using the protonated unbound inhibitors, with only slight differences between the neutral R6 and S6 cases.

With a historical context as a foundation, the current trends, practices, and perspectives regarding the manual component of educating deaf children is examined, including Manually Coded English systems and American Sign Language. As decisions are considered regarding various approaches to sign communication, it is necessary to investigate issues that support and also question the appropriateness of any given language/system. In addition to the sign language/systems, an equally important aspect is the instructional strategy that supports sign usage, such as Total Communication, Simultaneous Communication, and Bilingual Education.

(Methylcarbamoyl)triazenes have been shown to be effective cancer chemotherapeutic agents in a number of biological systems. Because of their chemical stability, it is likely that their activity in vivo is the result of a metabolic activation process. Previous studies have shown that 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3-methyl-3-(methylcarbamoyl)triazene (CMM) and 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3-benzyl-3-(methylcarbamoyl)triazene (CBzM) are metabolized by rat liver microsomes in the presence of NADPH to yield the ((hydroxymethyl)carbamoyl)triazene analogs of the parent compounds.

Through a qualitative research study we developed a model of employment success based on the experiences of successful adults with learning disabilities. This model may be particularly useful to students with learning disabilities in helping them experience success both in school and beyond. We suggest that the components of the model-internal decisions comprising desire, goal orientation, and reframing, and external manifestations or behaviors of persistence, goodness of fit, learned creativity, and favorable social ecologies-can be systematically taught and then used.
