Performance of contrast-enhanced mammography for detecting multifocal and multicentric breast cancer and evaluating tumour size, and implications for surgical management: Early experience in a tertiary centre.

Introduction: To compare diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) with standard 2D digital mammography (equivalent to low-energy image; LEM) for detection of multifocal and multicentric breast cancer and evaluation of tumour size and disease extent for preoperative planning.

Methods: Biopsy proven breast cancer patients who underwent CEM preoperatively between January 2021 and January 2023 were included in this study. CEM and LEM images were independently reviewed by at least two blinded readers.

A Randomized Phase III Study of Arfolitixorin versus Leucovorin with 5-Fluorouracil, Oxaliplatin, and Bevacizumab for First-Line Treatment of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: The AGENT Trial.

Purpose: Suboptimal treatment outcomes with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/folate, the standard of care for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), have generated interest in optimizing the folate. Arfolitixorin ([6R]-5,10-methylene-tetrahydrofolate) is an immediately active folate and may improve outcomes over the existing standard of care (leucovorin).

Experimental Design: AGENT was a randomized, phase III study (NCT03750786).

Global consensus on nutritional rickets: Implications for Australia.

In 2016, a global consensus on the prevention, diagnosis and management of nutritional rickets was published. The bone and mineral working group of the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group provides a summary and highlights differences to previous Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) guidelines on vitamin D deficiency and their implications for clinicians. Key points are: (i) The International Consensus document is focused on nutritional rickets, whereas the ANZ guidelines were focused on vitamin D deficiency.

Accuracy of parental estimate of child's weight in a paediatric emergency department.

Objectives: To determine the accuracy of using parental estimate of a child's weight compared to actual weight in a paediatric emergency setting.

Methods: Prospective, observational study. Age, weight and height data were collected from children aged 1 month up to 11 years with an Australian Triage score of 3 or higher.

Compromised Motor Dexterity Confounds Processing Speed Task Outcomes in Stroke Patients.

Most conventional measures of information processing speed require motor responses to facilitate performance. However, although not often addressed clinically, motor impairment, whether due to age or acquired brain injury, would be expected to confound the outcome measure of such tasks. The current study recruited 29 patients (20 stroke and 9 transient ischemic attack) with documented reduction in dexterity of the dominant hand, and 29 controls, to investigate the extent to which 3 commonly used processing speed measures with varying motor demands (a Visuo-Motor Reaction Time task, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV Symbol Search and Coding subtests) may be measuring motor-related speed more so than cognitive speed.

Use of a web-based educational intervention to improve knowledge of healthy diet and lifestyle in women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus compared to standard clinic-based education.

Background: This study introduced a web-based educational intervention for Australian women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The aim was to improve knowledge on healthy diet and lifestyle in GDM. Evaluation of the intervention explored women's knowledge and understanding of GDM, healthy diet, healthy food, and healthy lifestyle, after using the web-based program compared to women receiving standard clinic-based GDM education.

High prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in 2-17 year olds presenting with acute fractures in southern Australia.

Aim: To determine vitamin D deficiency risk and other lifestyle factors in children aged 2-17 years presenting with an acute fracture to Sunshine Hospital.

Methods: A prospective observational study was undertaken using a convenience sample data collected from children aged 2-17 years of age presenting with an acute fracture. Recruitment was undertaken over a 3-month period from February to May 2014.

Pathogenicity of non-albicans yeasts in the vagina.

Objective: It is hypothesized that vaginal non-albicans yeasts (NAYs) do not require treatment. The objective was to determine whether women (presenting with a range of vulvovaginal complaints) found to be harboring NAY, which is left untreated (no antifungals), have similar clinical outcomes to women with comparable presentations but who do not harbor NAY.

Design: This is a case-control study design comparing patient outcomes between women with untreated non-albicans Candida on vaginal swab cultures and those who were swab culture-negative.
