WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering (WASM-MECE), Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia 6102, Australia.

Proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers powered by sustainable energy represent a cutting-edge technology for renewable hydrogen generation, while slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics still remains a formidable obstacle that necessitates basic comprehension for facilitating electrocatalysts' design. Here, we report a low-iridium complex oxide LaSrIrO with a unique hexagonal structure consisting of isolated Ir(V)O octahedra and true peroxide O groups as a highly active and stable OER electrocatalyst under acidic conditions. Remarkably, LaSrIrO, containing 59 wt % less iridium relative to the benchmark IrO, shows about an order of magnitude higher mass activity, 6-folds higher intrinsic activity than the latter, and also surpasses the state-of-the-art Ir-based oxides ever reported.

Laboratorio de Superficies, Departamento de Fisicoquímica, Facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México 04510, Mexico.

Bubble coalescence plays a critical role in optimizing biological and industrial processes, impacting efficiency in areas such as fermentation, wastewater treatment, and foaming control. While the relationship between chemical structure and bubble coalescence has been thoroughly explored for inorganic ions, limited data exist on organic ions and surfactants, despite their widespread use in these industries. This study addresses this gap by investigating the effects of surfactant hydrophobicity and bubble size on coalescence behavior at a flat air-liquid interface and within a bubble column.

The depletion of valuable mineral reserves has rendered effluents generated from mining and industrial processing activities a promising resource for the production of precious elements. The synthesis and improvement of new adsorbents to extract valuable compounds from industrial wastes and pregnant leach solutions, besides increasing wealth, can play a significant role in reducing environmental concerns. In this work, a new and low-cost adsorbent for the selective extraction of rhenium (perrhenate ions, ReO) was synthesized by the free-radical polymerization (FRP) of a diallyl dimethylammonium chloride monomer (quaternary amine) in the presence of a crosslinker.

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can not only reduce the potential harm caused by solid waste piles to the local environment but also provide raw materials for manufacturing new batteries. Flotation is an alternative approach to achieve the selective separation of cathode and anode active materials from spent LIBs. However, the presence of organic binder on the surface of hydrophilic lithium transition-metal oxides results in losses of cathode materials in the froth phase.

Improving the efficiency of DNA extraction from iron incrustations and oilfield-produced water.

Sci Rep

February 2024

Curtin Corrosion Centre, Western Australian School of Mines, Minerals and Energy, Curtin University, Bentley, WA, Australia.

The quantity and quality of DNA isolated from environmental samples are crucial for getting robust high-throughput sequencing data commonly used for microbial community analysis. The differences in the nature and physicochemical properties of environmental samples impact DNA yields, and therefore, an optimisation of the protocols is always recommended. For instance, samples collected from corroded areas contain high concentrations of metals, salts, and hydrocarbons that can interfere with several steps of the DNA extraction protocols, thereby reducing yield and quality.

Molecular Simulation of H/CH Mixture Storage and Adsorption in Kaolinite Nanopores for Underground Hydrogen Storage.

ACS Omega

December 2023

Western Australian School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering, Curtin University 26 Dick Perry Avenue, Kensington, Western Australia 6151, Australia.

Hydrogen has been regarded as an important type of renewable energy; however, the usage of pure hydrogen remains a challenge due to the difficulty of transportation and storage. To facilitate the hydrogen usage, it has been proposed to add hydrogen into the existing natural gas pipeline and storage systems, and therefore, the blended hydrogen is injected into the underground gas reservoirs, which is often used for the seasonal storage of natural gas. However, the mechanism of the H/CH mixture storage in the porous formations of underground reservoirs still remains unclear.

Polarization Alignment in Polycrystalline BiFeO Photoelectrodes for Tunable Band Bending.

ACS Nano

November 2023

Nanomaterials Centre, School of Chemical Engineering, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, The University of Queensland, St Lucia, Queensland 4072, Australia.

Polarization in a semiconductor can modulate the band bending via the depolarization electric field (), subsequently tuning the charge separation and transfer (CST) process in photoelectrodes. However, the random orientation of dipole moments in many polycrystalline semiconductor photoelectrodes leads to negligible polarization effect. How to effectively align the dipole moments in polycrystalline photoelectrodes into the same direction to maximize the polarization is still to be developed.

July 2023

Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation, Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD 4072, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • Ecological engineering of soil formation in iron ore tailings is a new method aimed at sustainable rehabilitation by creating stable soil aggregates from fine textured tailings.
  • The process involves microbial and rhizosphere interactions that help form aggregates through the binding of mineral particles with organic materials, initially from decomposed organic matter.
  • The stability of these aggregates is enhanced by nanosized minerals created during the weathering of iron-bearing minerals, driven by the biogeochemical activities of early plant growth, leading to a proposed model for developing resilient soil structures in tailings.

Model for Investigating Relationships between Surfactant Micropollutant Properties and Their Separation from Liquid in a Bubble Column.

ACS Omega

April 2023

Laboratorio de Superficies, Departamento de Fisicoquímica, Facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México 04510, México.

The removal of surfactant micropollutants, such as dyes, pharmaceuticals, and proteins, through foam is very important in biotechnology and wastewater treatment. The literature shows that previous models consider mass balances within the foam but not the adsorption dynamics of micropollutant surfactants on bubble surfaces in the liquid solution. Thus, the main objective of this work is to examine the removal of surfactant micropollutants in a bubble column considering both mass balance and adsorption dynamics to calculate surfactant transport from the liquid bulk to the bubble surface.
