October 2024

The James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute and Department of Urology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA; The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, MD, USA. Electronic address:

Background And Objective: Growing evidence supports the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). However, the implications of residual UTUC at radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) after NAC are not well characterized. Our objective was to compare oncologic outcomes for pathologic risk-matched patients who underwent RNU for UTUC who either received NAC or were chemotherapy-naïve.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is the most potent vasoconstrictor peptide found in nature. Its production is stimulated by thrombin. By inhibiting thrombin we have previously shown that heparin, a highly negatively-charged glycosaminoglycan (GAG), suppresses the production of ET-1 by cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC).

Asynchronous and asymmetric burst-suppression in a patient with a corpus callosum lesion.

Clin Neurophysiol

January 1999

Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of the Hudson Valley Region at Westchester County Medical Center, Department of Neurology, New York Medical College, Valhalla 10595, USA.

Introduction: Burst suppression is seen in the electroencephalograms of patients receiving high doses of pentobarbital. In such circumstances, burst suppression is characterized by bilaterally synchronous and symmetric bursts of electrical activity followed by intervals of attenuation.

Methods: We report on a case of asymmetric and asynchronous pentobarbital-induced burst suppression that occurred after a corpus callosum lesion sustained during trauma.

In vitro effects and clinical evaluation of a human chorionic gonadotrophin preparation in acute leukemia.

Leukemia

November 1998

Zalmen A Arlin Cancer Research Institute, Westchester County Medical Center, New York Medical College, Valhalla 10595, USA.

Commercial human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) preparations decrease the tumorigenicity of human tumors in immunodeficient mice and induce apoptotic cell death in animal tumor models. Preliminary studies in humans have demonstrated tumor regression in patients with Kaposi's sarcoma given intralesional injections of HCG. To further evaluate HCG's antitumor activity we conducted in vitro and clinical evaluations of HCG in acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
