In niche-based community assembly theory, it is presumed that communities in habitats with high natural disturbance regimes are less likely to be structured by competitive mechanisms. Laurentian Great Lakes (hereafter Great Lakes) coastal wetlands can experience drastic diel fluctuations in dissolved oxygen levels, severe wave action, ice scour, and near complete freezing during the winter such that conditions are inhospitable for most organisms. The high natural disturbance levels are thought to cause high interannual turnover for aquatic macroinvertebrate communities and support the hypothesis that these communities are less likely to experience less competitive interactions and negative co-occurrence structure.

Meniere's disease (MD) is a complex inner ear disease related to endolymphatic hydrops and with multiple other etiologies suggested including autoimmunity and vascular insufficiency. Statins are lipid-lowering medications with additional effects including reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation. We performed a cross-sectional study comparing patients with MD on statins to those not on statins to see if there is any difference in disease activity (major vertigo spells) and hearing stage utilizing linear and logistic regression.

Background: Transcatheter patent foramen ovale (PFO) occluder device is a procedure mostly performed to prevent secondary stroke as a result of paradoxical emboli traversing an intracardiac defect into the systemic circulation. The complications and outcomes following the procedure remain poorly studied. We aimed to investigate morbidity and mortality associated with occluder device procedures using hospital frailty index score stratification.

Background: Disparities in acute myocardial infarction (AMI)-related outcomes have been reported before the COVID-19 pandemic. We studied in-hospital outcomes of AMI across demographic groups in the United States during the early COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was queried for 2020 to identify AMI-related hospitalizations based on appropriate ICD-10-CM codes categorized by sex, race, and hospital region categories.

Introduction: Around 15-20% of lesions necessitating percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) are attributed to coronary bifurcation lesions. We aim to study gender-based differences in PCI outcomes among bifurcation stents.
Methods: 3 studies were included after thorough systematic search using MEDLINE (EMBASE and PubMed).

Background: The incidence of premature myocardial infarction (PMI) in women (<65 years and men <55 years) is increasing. We investigated proportionate mortality trends in PMI stratified by sex, race, and ethnicity.
Methods And Results: CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) was queried to identify PMI deaths within the United States between 1999 and 2020, and trends in proportionate mortality of PMI were calculated using the Joinpoint regression analysis.
Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has been highly increased as the recommended option for patients with a high surgical risk. This study aims to commit a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the outcomes in severe aortic stenosis patients following emergency transcatheter aortic valve replacement (emergent TAVR) compared to elective TAVR or eBAV followed by elective TAVR.
Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL, Science Direct, and Google Scholar.

Background: Permanent pacemaker implantation is increasing exponentially to treat atrio-ventricular block and symptomatic bradyarrhythmia. Despite being a minor surgery, immediate complications such as pocket infection, pocket hematoma, pneumothorax, hemopericardium, and lead displacement do occur.
Methods: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample was queried from 2016 to 2018 to identify patients with pacemakers using ICD-10 procedure code.
Objective: To determine whether injection laryngoplasty (IL) resolves thin liquid aspiration among children with unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) after cardiac surgery.
Study Design: Retrospective case-control.
Setting: Tertiary children's hospital.
Background And Aim: Etrolizumab is a gut-targeted anti-β7 integrin monoclonal antibody. However, the evidence of etrolizumab efficacy and safety in ulcerative colitis remains inconclusive. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of etrolizumab as an induction and maintenance therapy for active moderate to severe ulcerative colitis.

Quantifying the various strategies implemented by prey species to avoid adverse interactions with predators can lead to a better understanding of potential population-level repercussions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine predator-prey interactions by quantifying the effect of predator species presence on detection rates of prey species, using coyotes () and white-tailed deer () in Central Appalachian forests of the eastern United States as a model predator-prey system.

Objectives: To determine the incidence of A-frame deformity and suprastomal collapse after pediatric tracheostomy.
Study Design: Retrospective cohort.
Methods: All patients (<18 years) that had a tracheostomy placed at a tertiary institution between 2015 and 2020 were included.
Deconstructing surgeries into steps and providing instructions with illustrations has been the staple of surgical textbooks for decades. However, it may be difficult for the novice surgeon to interpret 2-dimensional (2D) illustrations into 3D surgeries. The objective of this study is to create operable models that demonstrate the progression of surgery in 3D and allow for mastering the final steps of the operation first.

The present study evaluated whether cognitive dispersion on neuropsychological testing improved prediction of objectively assessed daily functioning using unobtrusive monitoring technologies. Hierarchical linear regression was used to evaluate whether cognitive dispersion added incremental information beyond mean neuropsychological performance in the prediction of objectively assessed IADLs (i.

Background: Right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) and end-diastolic volume (RVEDV) are not readily assessed through traditional modalities. Deep learning-enabled ECG analysis for estimation of right ventricular (RV) size or function is unexplored.
Methods And Results: We trained a deep learning-ECG model to predict RV dilation (RVEDV >120 mL/m), RV dysfunction (RVEF ≤40%), and numerical RVEDV and RVEF from a 12-lead ECG paired with reference-standard cardiac magnetic resonance imaging volumetric measurements in UK Biobank (UKBB; n=42 938).
Background: Data on national trends in mortality due to infective endocarditis (IE) in the United States are limited.
Methods And Results: Utilizing the multiple causes of death data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database from 1999 to 2020, IE and substance use were identified using codes. Between 1999 and 2020, the IE-related age-adjusted mortality rates declined.

Objective: Morbid obesity may influence candidacy for venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VVECMO) support. Indeed, body mass index (BMI) >40 is considered to be a relative contraindication due to increased mortality observed in patients with BMI above this value. There is scant evidence to characterize this relationship beyond speculating about the technical challenges of cannulation and difficulty in optimizing flows.

We assessed the association between the change in Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire 12 (KCCQ-12) score after transcatheter aortic valve replacement and mortality. Methods and Results We included patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement at Mayo Clinic between February 2012 to June 2022 and who completed a KCCQ-12 before and 30 to 45 days after the procedure.
