The goal of this American Rhinologic Society Expert Practice Statement (EPS) is to provide recommendations and guidance through evidence-based consensus statements regarding pediatric septoplasty. This EPS was developed following the previously published methodology and approval process. The topics of interest included appropriate indications, safety and efficacy, timing, relevant quality of life instruments, and surgical techniques.

Effect of self-efficacy among persons who inject drugs treated with direct-acting antivirals on Hepatitis C treatment initiation, duration, completion, adherence, and cure.

Drug Alcohol Depend

Background: Self-efficacy, a patient-level factor, has been shown to facilitate patient engagement in treatment and optimize treatment-related outcomes in various health contexts. Research on interventions supporting hepatitis C virus (HCV) direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment uptake and adherence among persons who inject drugs (PWID) is needed, but whether self-efficacy factors influence DAA treatment cascade outcomes in this population has been less studied.

Methods: Using the HERO study data, we analyzed a subset of participants with any general health self-efficacy data (n=708) measured at baseline and end-of-treatment time points using a 5-items instrument (facets: 'goal setting', 'goal attainment', 'having a positive effect', 'being in control', and 'working to improve').

Article Synopsis
  • * Phase 3 clinical trials often overlook marginalized groups who are disproportionately affected by HIV, making it harder for these populations to stick to daily treatment regimens.
  • * A recent workshop discussed ways to design more inclusive clinical trials for long-acting HIV therapies, which could lead to better care, wider use of these treatments, and improved access and reimbursement policies.

Introduction Preterm prelabor rupture of membrane (PPROM) contributes to increasing rates of preterm birth, causing greater health risks for newborns. While the mechanisms driving PPROM are not well understood, one hypothesis is that it is due to systemic inflammation, which can be caused by obesity defined as a BMI [Formula: see text]30 kg/m. The specific aim of the study was to compare neonatal outcomes after PPROM between patients who were obese vs not obese in early pregnancy at a tertiary medical center serving an Appalachian population.

Cardiovascular Responses to Occupational Physical Activity Are Exaggerated by Work-Related Stress and Low Fitness.

J Occup Environ Med

October 2024

From the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, West Virginia University School of Public Health, Morgantown, West Virginia (T.D.Q., B.B.G.); Department of Occupational Medicine, West Virginia University School of Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia (T.B.); and Division of Exercise Physiology, West Virginia University School of Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia (P.D.C., B.B.G.).

Objectives: Paradoxical associations between high occupational physical activity (OPA) and cardiovascular disease may be explained by exaggerated cardiovascular responses from high work-related stress or low worker fitness.

Methods: OPA, blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and rate-pressure product (RPP; HR × BP) were measured objectively for 24 hours in 19 male workers. Work-related stress was measured using the Stress in General Scale.

The importance of culinary and lifestyle medicine education to combat the growing burden of chronic disease is gaining recognition in the United States. However, few medical schools offer in-depth training with a 4-year longitudinal track. The Culinary and Lifestyle Medicine Track (CLMT) is a 4-year curriculum thread created at West Virginia University School of Medicine to address the need for comprehensive culinary and lifestyle medicine education.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive disease without meaningful therapeutic options beyond the first salvage therapy. Targeting PDAC metabolism through amino acid restriction has emerged as a promising new strategy, with asparaginases, enzymes that deplete plasma glutamine and asparagine, reaching clinical trials. In this study, we investigated the anti-PDAC activity of the asparaginase formulation Pegcrisantaspase (PegC) alone and in combination with standard-of-care chemotherapeutics.

Background: Elective cholecystectomy (CCY) is recommended for patients with gallstone-related acute cholangitis (AC) following endoscopic decompression to prevent recurrent biliary events. However, the optimal timing and implications of CCY remain unclear.

Aim: To examine the impact of same-admission CCY compared to interval CCY on patients with gallstone-related AC using the National Readmission Database (NRD).

Preclinical evaluation of ELP-004 in mice.

Pharmacol Res Perspect

August 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology, West Virginia University School of Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia, USA.

This study provides a detailed understanding of the preclinical pharmacokinetics and metabolism of ELP-004, an osteoclast inhibitor in development for the treatment of bone erosion. Current treatments for arthritis, including biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, are not well-tolerated in a substantial subset of arthritis patients and are expensive; therefore, new treatments are needed. Pharmacokinetic parameters of ELP-004 were tested with intravenous, oral, and subcutaneous administration and found to be rapidly absorbed and distributed.

Enterobacter cloacae cardiac implantable electronic device infections are rare but can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We report an 11-year-old female with Enterobacter cloacae infection of a dual-chamber transvenous pacemaker pocket. The report is supplemented by a comprehensive review of the literature on Enterobacter cloacae cardiac implantable electronic device infections.

Wilson's disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder that impairs copper metabolism. Copper accumulates in vital organs such as the brain, liver, and kidneys. The disease typically starts with copper accumulation in the liver and can initially present as acute hepatitis and hepatomegaly.

ProEnd: A Comprehensive Database for Identifying HbYX Motif-Containing Proteins Across the Tree of Life.

bioRxiv

June 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, West Virginia University School of Medicine, 4 Medical Center Dr., Morgantown, WV USA.

The proteasome plays a crucial role in cellular homeostasis by degrading misfolded, damaged, or unnecessary proteins. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of proteasome activity is vital, particularly the interaction with activators containing the hydrophobic-tyrosine-any amino acid (HbYX) motif. Here, we present ProEnd, a comprehensive database designed to identify and catalog HbYX motif-containing proteins across the tree of life.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the link between corneal diameter and internal corneal span using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in 54 eyes from children aged 0.1 to 11.3 years, including both healthy controls and those with primary congenital glaucoma.
  • Researchers analyzed cornea images to measure diameters and distances, finding a strong positive correlation in both horizontal and vertical measurements (Pearson r values of 0.89 and 0.93, respectively).
  • The results indicate that UBM can reliably estimate corneal diameter based on angle-to-angle distance, making it a valuable tool for assessing eye health in pediatric patients, regardless of glaucoma presence.
