Microtubules are essential for various cellular processes. The functional diversity of microtubules is attributed to the incorporation of various α- and β-tubulin isotypes encoded by different genes. In this work, we investigated the functional role of β4B-tubulin isotype (TUBB4B) in hearing and vision as mutations in TUBB4B are associated with sensorineural disease.

Microtubules, polymers of αβ-tubulin heterodimers, are essential for various cellular processes. The incorporation of different tubulin isotypes, each encoded by distinct genes, is proposed to contribute to the functional diversity observed in microtubules. However, the functional roles of each tubulin isotype are not completely understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric melanoma, the most common skin cancer in children, requires accurate staging for effective treatment, yet many patients undergo partial shave biopsies instead of the recommended excisional biopsy, raising concerns about the impact on diagnosis and outcomes.
  • In a study of 103 patients, partial shave biopsies were the most common method (66%), leading to more cases with compromised microstaging and a higher likelihood of invasive treatments, as over half showed positive deep margins.
  • Despite some patients being clinically suspected to have abnormal melanocytic tumors before biopsy, the findings highlight the need for improved practices in biopsy techniques to ensure better management of pediatric and young adult melanoma cases.

Preference Signaling in the Radiology Residency Match: National Survey of Applicants.

J Am Coll Radiol

January 2025

Assistant Professor, The Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland.

Objective: Two-tiered preference signaling has been implemented in the radiology residency application system to reduce congestion in the setting of high-volume applications. Signals are an indicator of strong interest that an applicant can transmit to a limited number of programs. This study assessed the impact of program signaling on interview invitations, how applicants strategically used signals based on their application's competitiveness, and applicants' attitudes toward the current signaling system.

Importance: Despite the proliferation of pharmacy standing-order naloxone dispensing across many US states before the change to over-the-counter status, few policy analyses have evaluated the implementation of pharmacy naloxone standing orders in addressing opioid overdose fatality among communities.

Objective: To determine whether the implementation of pharmacy standing-order naloxone was associated with lower opioid fatality rates compared with communities without pharmacies with standing-order naloxone.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective multisite study was conducted with an interrupted time series analysis across 351 municipalities in Massachusetts over 24 quarters (from January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2018).
