Olmesartan medoxomil (OLM) is the prodrug of olmesartan, an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker that has antihypertensive and antioxidant activities and renal protective properties. It exhibits low water solubility, which leads to poor bioavailability and limits its clinical potential. To improve the solubility of OLM, a host-guest inclusion complex (IC) between heptakis(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin (DMβCD) and the drug substance was obtained.

Novel Nanocomposites and Biopolymer-Based Nanocomposites for Hexavalent Chromium Removal from Aqueous Media.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Applied Chemistry and Engineering of Inorganic Compounds and the Environment, University Politehnica Timisoara, 2 Piata Victoriei, 300006 Timișoara, Romania.

Designing new engineered materials derived from waste is essential for effective environmental remediation and reducing anthropogenic pollution in our economy. This study introduces an innovative method for remediating metal-contaminated water, using two distinct waste types: one biowaste (eggshell) and one industrial waste (fly ash). We synthesized three novel, cost-effective nanoadsorbent types, including two new tertiary composites and two biopolymer-based composites (specifically k-carrageenan and chitosan), which targeted chromium removal from aqueous solutions.

Given the ubiquitous nature of love, numerous theories have been proposed to explain its existence. One such theory refers to love as a commitment device, suggesting that romantic love evolved to foster commitment between partners and enhance their reproductive success. In the present study, we investigated this hypothesis using a large-scale sample of 86,310 individual responses collected across 90 countries.

The study delves into the binding properties of acridine-9-amine and its selected, mainly N-substituted derivatives (A9As), with calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (CT-DNA). This investigation, conducted using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry, provides insights into the relationship between their structure and activity. The absorption spectra of the A9As exhibited a slight red shift and significant hypochromic effects, while the fluorescence emission intensities decreased in the presence of CT-DNA.

Angiotensin II receptor antagonists are tetrazole derivatives used in the treatment of high blood pressure, and are also indicated for the treatment of heart failure (NYHA class II-IV). They are used alone or in combination with other classes of antihypertensives or diuretics for the effective management of high blood pressure. In this study, we aim to evaluate the thermal stability and degradation kinetics for the principal compounds used in therapy from this class, namely telmisartan, valsartan, olmesartan medoxomil, and losartan potassium.

Background: A growing body of evidence links a high-fructose diet (HFrD) to metabolic disturbances, including inflammation, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and also endothelial dysfunction, yet its role in allergic asthma remains underexplored. Considering that obesity and hypercholesterolemia exacerbate asthma by promoting systemic inflammation, investigating interventions with dual metabolic and anti-inflammatory effects is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the potential modulatory effects of rosuvastatin in ameliorating the effects of HFrD-induced metabolic and vascular dysfunction in the context of allergic asthma.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) significantly impacts respiratory and motor function, balance, and cognition, leading to muscle weakness and impaired exercise capacity. The impairments often result in challenges with daily activities, particularly those requiring dual-tasking.

Objectives: The study investigated whether patients with severe COPD would exhibit more significant cognitive and motor performance decline during dual tasks compared to healthy controls.

Verifying patients' position and internal anatomical changes are important steps in the radiotherapy of rectal cancer. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an advanced imaging method that allows for the quantification of these modifications, ensuring the delivery of radiation dose to the tumor volume, while protecting surrounding organs at risk. The aim of this review is to discuss and analyze the benefits offered by this method of imaging on board the linear accelerator.

Background: Cardiac substructures are critical organs at risk in left-sided breast cancer radiotherapy being often overlooked during treatment planning. The treatment technique plays an important role in diminishing dose to critical structures. This review aims to analyze the impact of treatment- and patient-related factors on heart substructure dosimetry and to identify the gaps in literature regarding dosimetric reporting of cardiac substructures.

Treatment planning parameters in radiotherapy are key elements that dictate the success of treatment outcome. While some parameters are commonly evaluated irrespective of cancer type, others are site-dependent and strongly patient specific. Given the critical influence of planning parameters on personalized therapy, the aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations between the dosimetric indices (conformity, homogeneity and mismatch indices) related to tumor coverage and the patient-specific parameters which encompass parameters pertaining to organs at risk (widths and lengths of heart and ipsilateral lung included in treatment fields, mean/maximum doses to heart, ipsilateral lung, left anterior descending aorta and contralateral breast) and tumor volume.

In this study, we report the growth and comprehensive spectroscopic analysis of TmF-doped CaF crystals, grown using the vertical Bridgman method. The optical absorption and photoluminescence properties of both trivalent (Tm) and divalent (Tm) thulium ions were investigated. Optical absorption spectra in the UV-VIS-NIR range reveal characteristic transitions of Tm ions, as well as weaker absorption bands corresponding to Tm ions.

Automatic Segmentation of the Jaws Used in Guided Insertion of Orthodontic Mini Implants to Improve Their Stability and Precision.

Medicina (Kaunas)

October 2024

Department of Prosthodontics, Multidisciplinary Center for Research, Evaluation, Diagnosis and Therapies in Oral Medicine, "Victor Babes" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara, 2 Eftimie Murgu Sq., 300041 Timisoara, Romania.

With the goal of identifying regions with bicortical bone and avoiding root contact, the present study proposes an innovative technique for the simulation of the insertion of mini orthodontic implants using automatic jaw segmentation. The simulation of mini implants takes place in 3D rendering visualization instead of Multi-Planar Reconstruction (MPR) sections. The procedure involves utilizing software that automatically segments the jaw, teeth, and implants, ensuring their visibility in 3D rendering images.

Background: Left undiagnosed and untreated, the association between multiple sclerosis and mental health difficulties significantly increases the multimorbidity risk in these patients. Hence, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the prevalence of neuroticism, depression, and anxiety in MS and to explore the cumulative impact of these psychological factors on the disease expression.

Methods: A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases, according to the PRISMA guidelines.

December 2024

Faculty of Informatics & Science, University of Oradea, Oradea 410087, Romania; UniSA Allied Health and Human Performance, University of South Australia, Adelaide, SA 5001, Australia. Electronic address:

Cardio-oncology is lately gaining more attention due to radiation-induced cardiac events reported by a very large number of studies. In view of this, the current overview of the literature aimed to encompass all studies from the past 15 years to assess changes in cardiac dose due to treatment evolution, as well as the changes in treatment planning customs to incorporate not only the heart as a whole but also cardiac substructures. Modern treatment techniques, particularly proton therapy, offers superior cardiac sparing compared to more established radiotherapy, for all evaluated tumor sites.
