Background: Herbst therapy is an effective treatment for Class II malocclusions. However, the maintenance of the effects after fixed appliances treatment remains questionable. This retrospective study aimed to assess, using digital dental models, the sagittal and transverse dental arch changes in young patients during two Class II Division 1 treatment phases, first with modified Herbst appliance (HA) and then with fixed appliances.

Complex wastewater is generated during biodiesel production. We propose a new solution for the treatment of wastewater from enzymatic pretreatment of biodiesel production (WEPBP) by using a hybrid system based on the photo-Fered-Fenton process with O assistance (PEF-Fered-O). We applied response surface methodology (RSM) to determine the suitable conditions for the PEF-Fered-O process: a current intensity of 3 A, an initial solution pH controlled at 6.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is a public health problem worldwide. It is estimated that 90% of the patients diagnosed with TB live in vulnerable environments with limited health resources, such as individuals living in correctional facilities. This study aimed to identify the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among prisoners diagnosed with TB and the spatial determinants and time trends of the phenomenon in southern Brazil.

Motivated by the search for healthy alimentation and sustainable technological processes, this study aimed to produce a synbiotic composed of the prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, simultaneously, using cheese whey permeate as substrate by enzymatic-fermentative method. A central composite rotatable design with center point was used to evaluate the influence of temperature and enzyme concentration in the GOS and S. boulardii production.

In this study, a biocoagulant synthesized from the association of iron oxide (FeO) nanoparticles and Moringa oleifera Lam (MO) extract was tested in different concentrations for the removal of the apparent colour and dye concentration (reactive black 5) of synthetic textile wastewater. Coagulation/flocculation process was performed and followed by magnetic sedimentation in Jar-Test equipment, the operational parameters studied were sedimentation time and biocoagulant dosage. The efficiency of the C/F/S process was determined by analysing the apparent colour and RB5 concentration, and removals of 93.

Iron bioaccumulation in basidiomycetes is an alternative to recover ferrous sulphate from titanium dioxide pigment production and to produce an iron-enriched mycelial biomass. This study aimed to evaluate iron bioaccumulation capacity in vegetative mycelium of edible and medicinal fungi grown in malt extract liquid medium with different ferrous sulphate contents. Five basidiomycetes were grown in malt extract liquid medium with different iron contents from 0.

Basidiomycetes can bioaccumulate high iron contents, but there are few studies on iron availability from the mycelial biomass in order to support their use as an iron-enriched fungal food. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro iron bioaccumulation and availability in the mycelial biomass of edible and medicinal basidiomycetes grown in two distinct culture media. Lentinus crinitus, Ganoderma lucidum, Schizophyllum commune, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus eryngii, Lentinula edodes, and Agaricus subrufescens were grown in liquid culture medium of malt extract or sugarcane molasses to obtain iron-bioaccumulated mycelial biomass.

Apple pomace was studied as a raw material for the production of xylitol and 2G ethanol, since this agroindustrial residue has a high concentration of carbohydrate macromolecules, but is still poorly studied for the production of fermentation bioproducts, such as polyols. The dry biomass was subjected to dilute-acid hydrolysis with HSO to obtain the hemicellulosic hydrolysate, which was concentrated, detoxified and fermented. The hydrolyzate after characterization was submitted to submerged fermentations, which were carried out in Erlenmeyer flasks using, separately, the yeasts Candida guilliermondii and Kluyveromyces marxianus.

A photo-electro-Fenton (PEF) reactor employing boron-doped diamond (BDD) and soft iron anodes was studied in landfill leachate (LL) treatment. The reactor operation parameters (ROP) HO concentration, current intensity and flow rate were investigated in the removal of Abs 254 nm. The PEF process with BDD anode, operating at the best operational conditions, was used as a pre-treatment and enabled biological oxidation (BO).

Background: Children with vertically transmitted hepatitis B virus develop chronic infection up to 90% of the time. This study aimed to verify the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in pregnant patients treated in a Brazilian public hospital and analyze the prophylactic measures in newborns.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by collcting data in the electronic charts of patients who attended the obstetric and maternity departments, from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2016, and evaluating the results of pregnant women's HBsAg, prophylaxis in newborns, and clinical follow-up.

Many efforts have been made to minimize the polluting effect of wastewater containing dyes that are potentially toxic to the environment. The association of the coagulation/flocculation (CF) process, using saline extract of Moringa oleifera Lam (MO) seeds and subsequently ultrafiltration (UF) in TiO-modified membranes was performed to remove reactive black 5 dye (10 ppm, RB5) from aqueous solution. The efficiency of the hybrid process was measured by the removal of the dye concentration, apparent color and fouling parameters.

Introduction: Women's sense of attractiveness and body image, and the impact of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) over these constructs, are likely influenced by social and cultural background.
Aim: To evaluate sexual function and body image in women with POP, to compare the sense of attractiveness between women with and without POP, and to translate the Body Image in the Pelvic Organ Prolapse (BIPOP) questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese and validate it in this population.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 105 Brazilian women with POP, we administered the BIPOP (scored from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating worse body image), the Female Sexual Function Inventory (FSFI) (scored from 2 to 36, with higher scores indicating lower risk for sexual dysfunction), and the Attractiveness subscale of the Body Attitudes Scale questionnaire (BAQ) (scored from 5 to 35, with higher score indicating better body image).

Leakage of transformer dielectric fluids is a concern because it may pose a risk of environmental contamination. In this study, the deleterious effects of vegetable and mineral dielectric fluids in water bodies were investigated using biodegradability and acute toxicity tests with Danio rerio and Artemia salina. Regarding biodegradability, all four tested vegetable oils (soy, canola, sunflower and crambe) were considered as easily biodegradable, presenting degradation rates significantly higher than the Lubrax-type mineral fluid.

For the photocatalytic degradation of the hydrogen sulphide (HS) in the gas-phase it was developed a rectangular reactor, coated with acrylic paint supported on fiber cement material. The surface formed by the paint coverage was characterized structural and morphologically by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray diffraction analysis. The flow rate and the inlet concentration of HS were evaluated as operational performance parameters of the reactor.
