Depression treatment preferences of older white and Mexican origin men.

Objective: Among older white and Mexican origin male primary care patients, we examined preferences for features of depression care programs that would encourage depressed older men to enter and remain in treatment.

Method: Sixty-three (45 white, 18 Mexican origin) older men were recruited in six primary care clinics. All had clinical depression in the past year and/or were receiving depression treatment.

The association of access to medical care with regular source of care and sociodemographic characteristics in patients with HIV and tuberculosis.

Purpose: To examine satisfaction with access to health care in two populations, one with HIV and one with TB, and examine the effect of having a regular doctor and sociodemographic characteristics.

Design: Cross-Sectional survey.

Patients: A sample of HIV inpatients hospitalized at seven Los Angeles sites (N = 217) and TB outpatients chosen randomly from the Los Angeles County TB Registry Census (N = 313).

Leptin-induced decrease in food intake is not associated with changes in gastric emptying in lean mice.

Chronic treatment with leptin regulates body weight and energy balance and reduces food intake in obese and lean mice. In 18- to 20-h fasted lean mice (C57BL/6, +/+), we examined the acute effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of recombinant mouse leptin (0.12 mg/kg) on food intake and gastric emptying.

Economic reform and health sector policy: lessons from structural adjustment programs.

From a purely economic perspective, structural adjustment programs (SAPs) and economic reform policies are viewed as short-term austerities that lead to long-term growth and development. These intertemporal trade-offs, however, are not always acceptable in health. Unique biologic events such as intrauterine development and neural development cannot be postponed even for a short period.
