Prevalence of overweight and obesity in Nigeria: Systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies.

In Nigeria, several studies have assessed the prevalence of overweight/obesity with different reports. The purpose of this study was to use a systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze these overweight and obesity reports from different locations in Nigeria over the last ten years. In addition, there was a dearth of systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the prevalence, trends, and demographic characteristics of overweight and obesity in the country.

A 26-year-old man, who was training in bad weather for a mountain ultramarathon, became hypothermic after running for 4 h. He deteriorated and was unable to continue. His running partner went for help.

Abdominal tuberculosis masquerading as ovarian carcinoma in a Caucasian woman: a diagnostic challenge.

We present a case of a 37-year-old Caucasian woman with abdominal distension and loss of weight. She was initially presumed to be a case of ovarian malignancy due to an elevated serum cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) level and imaging of abdomen and pelvis that showed ascites and bulky ovaries. However, histological examination of biopsy later revealed it to be a case of abdominal tuberculosis (AbT).

An international genome-wide meta-analysis of primary biliary cholangitis: Novel risk loci and candidate drugs.

Backgrounds & Aims: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease in which autoimmune destruction of the small intrahepatic bile ducts eventually leads to cirrhosis. Many patients have inadequate response to licensed medications, motivating the search for novel therapies. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses (GWMA) of PBC have identified numerous risk loci for this condition, providing insight into its aetiology.

Long-term follow-up of a patient with JAG1-associated retinopathy.

Purpose: To report the long-term structural and functional changes in the posterior segments of an adult with an unusual retinal dystrophy caused by a novel mutation in JAG1.

Methods: A 33-year-old female underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examination, including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurement, dilated fundus imaging (wide-angle fundus colour and short wavelength autofluorescence imaging), macular and peripheral spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and electroretinography (ERG) at baseline and 10 years later at the age of 43. The patient also underwent systemic review with detailed cardiac, brain and renal investigations.

Systemic inflammatory markers and serum lactate dehydrogenase predict survival in patients with Wilms tumour.

Introduction: Markers of inflammation such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) have been found to be associated with survival in cancer patients. The aim of the current study was to establish the prognostic significance of simple laboratory markers of systemic inflammation in paediatric patients diagnosed with Wilms tumour (WT). Additionally, we aimed to compare the complete blood count (CBC) parameters of WT patients and the non-oncological control group.

X Chromosome Contribution to the Genetic Architecture of Primary Biliary Cholangitis.

Background & Aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease.

Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals).

Clinical and molecular characterization of the R751L-CFTR mutation.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) arises from mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator () gene, resulting in progressive and life-limiting respiratory disease. R751L is a rare CFTR mutation that is poorly characterized. Our aims were to describe the clinical and molecular phenotypes associated with R751L.

Background And Aims: Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of female reproductive cancer death. It is estimated that dietary habits accounts for 30% of all cancers. This review sets out what we know about the food, nutrition and lifestyle factors that cause ovarian cancer, affect women with ovarian cancer and the problems associated with study design that may affect its prevention and patient survival.

A Novel, non-invasive Test Enabling Bladder Cancer Detection in Urine Sediment of Patients Presenting with Haematuria-A Prospective Multicentre Performance Evaluation of ADXBLADDER.

Bladder cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the European Union. Here, we evaluate the performance of a novel, commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay utilising MCM5 antibodies (ADXBLADDER; Arquer Diagnostics Ltd, Sunderland, UK) for the detection of bladder cancer, in a blinded, prospective study of 856 patients, across seven centres, presenting with haematuria. The results were compared with the patients' clinical data and final diagnosis as defined by the results of the imaging and cystoscopy, with a prevalence of bladder cancer of 8.

Postoperative critical care and high-acuity care provision in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Background: Decisions to admit high-risk postoperative patients to critical care may be affected by resource availability. We aimed to quantify adult ICU/high-dependency unit (ICU/HDU) capacity in hospitals from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand (NZ), and to identify and describe additional 'high-acuity' beds capable of managing high-risk patients outside the ICU/HDU environment.

Methods: We used a modified Delphi consensus method to design a survey that was disseminated via investigator networks in the UK, Australia, and NZ.

Two case reports of zoledronic acid-induced uveitis.

Zoledronic acid (zoledronate) is a bisphosphonate used predominantly as a second-line treatment for post-menopausal osteoporosis. Its administration is associated with an acute phase reaction. Here, we present two cases of anterior uveitis following initial administration of zoledronate.

Osteopontin: its potential role in cancer of children and young adults.

Objective: Osteopontin (OPN) is aglyco-phosphoprotein, involved in tissue remodeling, inflammation and boneresorption. In various adult neoplasms OPN was shown to correlate with cancer progression, invasiveness and metastasis.

This article highlights the multifactorial and bidirectional interaction between cardiovascular diseases, depression and anxiety, and the need for early assessment, diagnosis and intervention.

Femoral Traction Splints in Mountain Rescue Prehospital Care: To Use or Not to Use? That Is the Question.

Objectives: To determine the incidence of femur fractures in mountain rescue in England and Wales. To investigate the attitudes of rescuers toward the use of femoral traction splints. To review the literature for evidence on the use of traction splints in prehospital medicine and test the hypothesis that femoral traction splints reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with a fractured femur.

Physiological POSSUM as an indicator for long-term survival in vascular surgery.

Objectives: We investigated whether the POSSUM physiology score, originally designed as an indicator for 30-day mortality for comparative audit, could be used as an indicator of long-term survival in vascular surgery practice.

Methods: Data from 184 different vascular procedures conducted between 1989 and 2000, containing survival data for each patient of 10 years or longer, were analysed retrospectively. Parameters collected were the pre-operative physiological and the operative severity POSSUM score, gender, and type of procedure.

Giant colonic lipoma presenting with intermittent intestinal obstruction.

Lipomas of gastrointestinal (GI) tract are the common benign tumours. They are usually small and asymptomatic; however, large colonic lipoma is a rare tumour and may cause intestinal obstruction. A similar rare case of large lipoma, treated with laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, is reported here.
