Transplanted islet functional β-cell mass is measured by the β-cell secretory capacity derived from the acute insulin response to glucose-potentiated arginine (AIRpot), however, data are limited beyond one-year post-transplant for individuals with type 1 diabetes. We evaluated changes in β-cell secretory capacity in a single-center longitudinal analysis and examined relationships with measures of islet cell hormone metabolism and clinical measures of graft function (mixed-meal tolerance test [MMTT] C-peptide, BETA-2 score, and continuous glucose monitoring [CGM]). Eleven individuals received purified human pancreatic islets over one or two intra-portal infusions to achieve insulin-independence and were followed over a median (IQR) 6 (5-7) years.

Selective fluorescence sensors for Cu and Hg ions using acridinium-polymer complexes.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

February 2025

West Chester University of Pennsylvania, 700 South High Street, West Chester, PA 19383, United States.

The photophysical properties of two acridinium derivatives, 9-phenyl-10-methylacridinium (Ph-Arc) and 9-mesityl-10-methyl acridinium (Mes-Acr) were investigated in aqueous solutions of poly(methacrylic acids) (PMAA) at various pH values with various polymer to dye (R/D) ratios. In acidic conditions, PMAA effectively turned on the emission of both acridinium derivatives. Micromolar concentrations of copper (II) ions can selectively turn off the emission of dye/PMAA mixtures with a linear response range from 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Standard Modifiable Cardiovascular Risk Factors (SMuRF), like hypertension and diabetes, are typically significant in causing atherosclerotic disease, but this study looks at female STEMI patients who lack those risk factors.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 200,000 STEMI admissions, finding that only 6.6% of patients were without any SMuRF, and these patients were generally older and more likely to be white.
  • Interestingly, SMuRF-less patients had a higher in-hospital mortality rate (three times more likely) than those with SMuRF, even though they had fewer other heart-related conditions, highlighting the unique challenges in this group.

Trait self-report mindfulness scales measure one's disposition to pay nonjudgmental attention to the present moment. Concerns have been raised about the validity of trait mindfulness scales. Despite this, there is extensive literature correlating mindfulness scales with objective brain measures, with the goal of providing insight into mechanisms of mindfulness, and insight into associated positive mental health outcomes.

Purpose: This clinical tutorial will present the concept of applying auditory-perceptual prompts (implicit instruction) typically used in voice therapy to the anatomy and physiology of the voice production system (explicit instruction) via the Estill Voice Model (EVM) and the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS).

Methods: EVM offers an integrated implicit-explicit instructional approach to voice training allowing for isolated practice of vocal structures (explicit) that interact to produce functional voice qualities (implicit), such as modal speech and louder projected voice qualities. In EVM, voice quality is correlated with the specific anatomy and physiologic adjustments via 13 Estill Figures and Options (eg, Larynx Figure has three options: High, Mid, and Low).

Article Synopsis
  • Young patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who lack standard cardiovascular risk factors (like high blood pressure or diabetes) experience worse outcomes compared to those with these risk factors.
  • In a study involving nearly 42,000 patients, those without any traditional risk factors were more likely to be female and have congestive heart failure, but less likely to be obese.
  • The findings revealed that these SMuRF-less patients faced significantly higher rates of in-hospital mortality and other serious complications, highlighting the need for further research on non-traditional risk factors in heart issues.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examines how exposure to alcohol and cannabis (specifically THC) during pregnancy affects certain types of inhibitory interneurons in the hippocampus of rats, focusing on somatostatin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) neurons.
  • - Pregnant rats were exposed to either alcohol or air and THC or a placebo, with the effects on interneuron densities analyzed after birth, revealing sex-specific changes in neuron populations.
  • - The findings suggest that both THC and alcohol can impact brain function developmentally, particularly by altering inhibition processes in a way that varies between male and female rats.
