School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou 310053, China; Department of Ophthalmology, The Quzhou Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Quzhou People's Hospital, Quzhou 324000, China. Electronic address:

Background: Resistance to senescence in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells can delay the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the mechanisms underlying RPE cell senescence remain inadequately understood, and effective therapeutic strategies are lacking. While astragaloside IV (Ast) has demonstrated anti-aging properties, its specific effects on RPE cell senescence and potential mechanisms are not yet fully clarified.

Membranes of Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity PIM-1 for Gas Separation: Modification Strategies and Meta-Analysis.

Nanomicro Lett

January 2025

Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, The University of Manchester, Manchester, M13 9PL, UK.

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have received considerable attention for making high-performance membranes for carbon dioxide separation over the last two decades, owing to their highly permeable porous structures. However, challenges regarding its relatively low selectivity, physical aging, and plasticisation impede relevant industrial adoptions for gas separation. To address these issues, several strategies including chain modification, post-modification, blending with other polymers, and the addition of fillers, have been developed and explored.

Layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are attractive cathode candidates for rechargeable secondary batteries because of their high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, LTMOs suffer from severe capacity attenuation, voltage decay, and sluggish kinetics, resulting from irreversible lattice oxygen evolution and unstable cathode-electrolyte interface. Besides, LTMOs accumulate surface residual alkali species, like hydroxides and carbonates, during synthesis, limiting their practical application.

Exploring the effect of gestational diabetes mellitus on retinal vascular morphology by PKSEA-Net.

Front Cell Dev Biol

January 2025

Quzhou Aliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Quzhou People's Hospital, Quzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a temporary metabolic disorder in which small retinal vessels may have experience subtle changes before clinical lesions of the fundus retina appear. An innovative artificial intelligence image processing technology was applied to locate and analyze the small retinal vessel morphology and accurately evaluate the changes of the small retinal vessels in GDM patients and pregnant women with normal blood glucose and non-pregnant women with normal blood glucose.

Methods: The subjects were divided into three groups:GDM group, pregnant control group (PC), and normal control group (NC).

Background: Vessel segmentation in fundus photography has become a cornerstone technique for disease analysis. Within this field, Ultra-WideField (UWF) fundus images offer distinct advantages, including an expansive imaging range, detailed lesion data, and minimal adverse effects. However, the high resolution and low contrast inherent to UWF fundus images present significant challenges for accurate segmentation using deep learning methods, thereby complicating disease analysis in this context.

Knee arthritis is a common degenerative joint disease, usually with joint swelling, chronic pain, and dysfunction as the main clinical manifestations. At present, the conservative treatment for knee arthritis is mostly using anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, but the effect is mostly temporary, and can not prevent its progress and surgery is usually the last treatment method. Total knee arthroplasty, also known as TKA, is one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis of the knee that has progressed to the end stage.

Background: Sarcopenia, a prevalent muscle disorder in the older adults, is characterized by accelerated loss of muscle mass and function, contributing to increased risks of falls, functional decline, and mortality. The relationship between dietary oxidative balance score (DOBS) and sarcopenia, however, remains unclear.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 cohort, which included 8,240 participants, aged 47.

Background: Insulin resistance (IR) plays a pivotal role in the interplay between metabolic disorders and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Various non-insulin-based indices emerge as reliable surrogate markers for assessing IR, including the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, the TyG index with body mass index (TyG-BMI), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and the metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR). However, the ability of different IR indices to predict outcome in HFpEF patients has not been extensively explored.

MFGE8 induces anti-PD-1 therapy resistance by promoting extracellular vesicle sorting of PD-L1.

Cell Rep Med

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedics of the Second Affiliated Hospital and Institute of Immunology, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou 310009, China. Electronic address:

Anti-PD-1 therapy, effective in patients with various advanced tumors, still encounters the challenge of insensitivity in most patients. Here, we demonstrate that PD-L1 on tumor cell-derived extracellular vesicles (TEVs) is critical for anti-PD-1 therapy resistance. Reducing endogenous and transferring exogenous TEVs abrogates and induces anti-PD-1 therapy resistance, respectively.

Breast

January 2025

Department of Breast Surgery, Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Intelligent Cancer Biomarker Discovery and Translation, The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. Electronic address:

Background: Ongoing discussions persist concerning the precedence of neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) relative to adjuvant therapy (AT) for patients with T1c, node-negative, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), and pertinent guidelines for these individuals are absent.

Methods: Women diagnosed with T1cN0M0-stage TNBC who received chemotherapy and surgery were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database (2010-2020). To balance baseline characteristics and mitigate selection bias, propensity score matching (PSM) was used to create the NAT and AT cohorts.
