An integrated proteomic and phosphoproteomic landscape of chronic kidney disease.

J Proteomics

January 2025

Department of General Surgery, the People's Hospital of Yuhuan, Taizhou, Zhejiang 317600, China. Electronic address:

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is gradually rising worldwide. Patients often remain asymptomatic for an extended period, leaving them unaware of their condition, which can lead to progressing to end-stage renal disease and cause significant economic burden. Improved understanding of CKD pathogenesis can enhance early detection and facilitate advances in drug development.

Objectives: This study measures the differences in inpatient performance after a points-counting payment policy based on diagnosis-related group (DRG) was implemented. The point value is dynamic; its change depends on the annual DRGs' cost settlements and points of the current year, which are calculated at the beginning of the following year.

Design: A longitudinal study using a robust multiple interrupted time series model to evaluate service performance following policy implementation.

Learning Representations from Heart Sound: A Comparative Study on Shallow and Deep Models.

Cyborg Bionic Syst

March 2024

Educational Physiology Laboratory, Graduate School of Education, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113-0033, Japan.

Leveraging the power of artificial intelligence to facilitate an automatic analysis and monitoring of heart sounds has increasingly attracted tremendous efforts in the past decade. Nevertheless, lacking on standard open-access database made it difficult to maintain a sustainable and comparable research before the first release of the PhysioNet CinC Challenge Dataset. However, inconsistent standards on data collection, annotation, and partition are still restraining a fair and efficient comparison between different works.

Effective therapies of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are lacking due to the unclear molecular pathogenesis. Previous single omics-studies have described potential molecular regulation mechanism of CKD only at the level of transcription or translation. Therefore, this study generated an integrated transcriptomic and proteomic profile to provide deep insights into the continuous transcription-translation process during CKD.

Introduction: Previous studies have suggested that the D-dimer to fibrinogen ratio (DD/Fg) could be a potential predictor for deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and stroke severity. However, the association between plasma DD/Fg and functional outcome following acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has been unclear.

Methods: Our study followed the STROBE guideline and used a prospective cohort design to investigate this association.

Inflammatory infiltration and bone destruction are important pathological features of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which originate from the disturbed niche of macrophages. Here, we identified a niche-disrupting process in RA: due to overactivation of complement, the barrier function of lining macrophages is disrupted and mediates inflammatory infiltration within the joint, thereby activating excessive osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. However, complement antagonists have poor biological applications due to superphysiologic dose requirements and inadequate effects on bone resorption.

Gastric cancer (GC) has high rates of morbidity and mortality, and this phenomenon is particularly evident in coastal regions where local dietary habits favor the consumption of pickled foods such as salted fish and vegetables. In addition, the diagnosis rate of GC remains low due to the lack of diagnostic serum biomarkers. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify potential serum GC biomarkers for use in clinical practice.

Metabolic-related markers are novel tools for assessing insulin resistance. Early identification of post-transplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) before hyperglycemia can be helpful to attenuate the rapid development of diabetic complications. This article aims to explore the convenient and inexpensive values of metabolic-related markers, including TyG, TyG-BMI, TG/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C for predicting PTDM.

Periplocin, a natural compound, has been shown to induce apoptosis in a variety of cancer cells. However, no research has been conducted to demonstrate that Periplocin has a regulatory effect on autophagy. This study is aimed to determine the effect of Periplocin treatment on autophagy in human pancreatic cancer cells, as well as the underlying mechanisms.

Purpose: An accurate and reliable target volume delineation is critical for the safe and successful radiotherapy. The purpose of this study is to develop new 2D and 3D automatic segmentation models based on RefineNet for clinical target volume (CTV) and organs at risk (OARs) for postoperative cervical cancer based on computed tomography (CT) images.

Methods: A 2D RefineNet and 3D RefineNetPlus3D were adapted and built to automatically segment CTVs and OARs on a total of 44 222 CT slices of 313 patients with stage I-III cervical cancer.

Noninvasive differentiating thyroid follicular adenoma from carcinoma preoperatively is of great clinical value to decrease the risks resulted from excessive surgery for patients with follicular neoplasm. The purpose of this study is to investigate the accuracy of ultrasound radiomics features integrating with ultrasound features in the differentiation between thyroid follicular carcinoma and adenoma. A total of 129 patients diagnosed as thyroid follicular neoplasm with pathologically confirmed follicular adenoma and carcinoma were enrolled and analyzed retrospectively.

Ultrasound (US) imaging has been recognized and widely used as a screening and diagnostic imaging modality for cervical cancer all over the world. However, few studies have investigated the U-net-based automatic segmentation models for cervical cancer on US images and investigated the effects of automatic segmentations on radiomics features. A total of 1102 transvaginal US images from 796 cervical cancer patients were collected and randomly divided into training (800), validation (100) and test sets (202), respectively, in this study.

Sex differences in microstructural alterations in the corpus callosum tracts in drug-naïve children with ADHD.

Brain Imaging Behav

August 2022

Department of Psychiatry, the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, 325003, Zhejiang Province, China.

Widespread alterations in the corpus callosum (CC) microstructure and organization have been found in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, few studies have investigated the diffusion characteristics and volume of transcallosal fiber tracts defined by specific cortical projections in ADHD, which is important for identifying distinct functional interhemispheric connection abnormalities. In the current study, an automated fiber-tract quantification (AFQ) approach based on diffusion tensor imaging identified seven CC tracts according to their cortical projections and estimated diffusion parameters and volume among 76 drug-naïve ADHD patients (53 boys and 23 girls) and 37 typically developing children (TDC) (20 boys and 17 girls) matched for age, IQ, and handedness. We found significantly lower fractional anisotropy (FA) in the occipital and superior parietal tracts and higher mean diffusivity (MD) in the posterior, superior parietal and anterior frontal tracts in children with ADHD compared with TDC.

Psychological Distress and All-Cause, Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer Mortality Among Adults with and without Diabetes.

Clin Epidemiol

July 2021

Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Departamento de Medicina Preventiva, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Aim: To examine the association of psychological distress with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer mortality in US adults, and verified whether the associations differed between participants with and without diabetes.

Methods: A total of 485,864 adults (446,288 without diabetes and 39,576 with diabetes) who participated in the National Health Interview Survey from 1997 to 2013 were linked to the National Death Index through December 31, 2015. Psychological distress was measured by the Kessler 6 distress scale (K6).

Background: The reformulated simethicone emulsion from Berlin Chemical AG might develop white flocculate precipitate covering the gastric mucosa when used before esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). We aim to investigate whether combining the reformulated simethicone emulsion with 5% sodium bicarbonate solution could prevent the development of white precipitate and improve visibility during EGD.

Methods: Our clinical study involved 523 patients.
