Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children. mRNA vaccines based on the lipopolyplex (LPP) platform have been previously reported, but they remain unapplied in RSV vaccine development. In this study, we developed a novel LPP-delivered mRNA vaccine that expresses the respiratory syncytial virus prefusion protein (RSV pre-F) to evaluate its immunogenicity and protective effect in a mouse model.

Spheroids, as three-dimensional (3D) cell aggregates, can be prepared using various methods, including hanging drops, microwells, microfluidics, magnetic manipulation, and bioreactors. However, current spheroid manufacturing techniques face challenges such as complex workflows, the need for specialized personnel, and poor batch reproducibility. In this study, we designed a support-free, 3D-printed microwell chip and developed a compatible low-cell-adhesion process.

Inactivation of antibiotic resistant bacteria by nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots through spontaneous generation of intracellular and extracellular reactive oxygen species.

Mater Today Bio

February 2025

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Visual Science, School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, School of Biomedical Engineering, Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, 325027, China.

The widespread antibiotic resistance has called for alternative antimicrobial agents. Carbon nanomaterials, especially carbon quantum dots (CQDs), may be promising alternatives due to their desirable physicochemical properties and potential antimicrobial activity, but their antimicrobial mechanism remains to be investigated. In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were synthesized to inactivate antibiotic-resistant bacteria and treat bacterial keratitis.

Mechanically regulated microcarriers with stem cell loading for skin photoaging therapy.

Bioact Mater

April 2025

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, 325035, China.

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation compromises skin structural integrity and results in disruption of normal physiological functions. Stem cells have gained attention in anti-photoaging, while controlling the tissue mechanical microenvironment of cell delivery sites is crucial for regulating cell fate and achieving optimal therapeutic performances. Here, we introduce a mechanically regulated human recombinant collagen (RHC) microcarrier generated through microfluidics, which is capable of modulating stem cell differentiation to treat photoaged skin.

The acidic tumor microenvironment, a hallmark of many solid tumors, is primarily induced by the high glycolytic rate of tumor cells. To avoid acidosis, tumor cells ingeniously maintain an acidic extracellular pH while keeping a relatively alkaline intracellular pH. Overturning the unique pH gradient of tumor cells has exhibited to be a viable approach for cancer therapy.

Phototherapy presents an effective approach for treating localized methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections; however, the tradeoff between therapeutic efficacy and negative off-target effect persists. To address these issues, we have developed a nanoparticle-hydrogel superstructure comprising phototherapeutic liposomal nanobubbles (NB) and fat extract (FE) encapsulated by F-127 hydrogel. After local administration to sites of MRSA infection, the superstructure effectively neutralizes high levels of MRSA toxins to protect against toxin-mediated cytotoxicity through loaded, which can also be leveraged to enhance anti-MRSA efficacy via toxin-regulated on-demand phototherapy upon near-infrared irradiation.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors, and radiotherapy plays a pivotal role in its therapeutic regimen. However, radiotherapy resistance is the main cause of therapeutic failure in patients. Our previous study revealed that Adiponectin Receptor 1 (AdipoR1) is involved in regulating radiation resistance in liver cancer patients treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou 310053, China; Department of Ophthalmology, The Quzhou Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Quzhou People's Hospital, Quzhou 324000, China. Electronic address:

Background: Resistance to senescence in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells can delay the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the mechanisms underlying RPE cell senescence remain inadequately understood, and effective therapeutic strategies are lacking. While astragaloside IV (Ast) has demonstrated anti-aging properties, its specific effects on RPE cell senescence and potential mechanisms are not yet fully clarified.

Knee arthritis is a common degenerative joint disease, usually with joint swelling, chronic pain, and dysfunction as the main clinical manifestations. At present, the conservative treatment for knee arthritis is mostly using anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, but the effect is mostly temporary, and can not prevent its progress and surgery is usually the last treatment method. Total knee arthroplasty, also known as TKA, is one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis of the knee that has progressed to the end stage.
