Background: In China, migrant workers (MWs) constitute a significant vulnerable group that may be highly susceptible to depression. However, there is a lack of empirical research exploring the correlation between subjective social status (SSS) and depressive symptoms among MWs. The objective of this study is to examine the mediating roles of job fairness and job burnout, as well as to investigate potential generational differences in this association.

Altered gray matter structural covariance networks in young adults with obesity.

Background: Overwhelming evidence showed that obesity was associated with abnormal brain functional networks. However, the changes of structural covariance networks (SCNs) based on cortical thickness (CT) and cortical surface area (CSA) in obesity is still unclear.

Methods: In this study, 243 young adults with obesity and matched 243 lean individuals were enrolled from the Human Connectome Project Release S1200 dataset.

The interpersonal neural coupling in group creative ideation.

Group creative ideation, the capacity of group to produce novel and useful ideas, is essential for navigating challenges and embracing opportunities. Despite its significance, research to decode its neurocognitive underpinnings utilizing interpersonal neuroscience paradigm has just commenced, linking group creative ideation to interpersonal neural coupling. In this perspective, we propose an interpersonal neural coupling in group creative ideation framework, which suggests that group creative ideation is supported by interpersonal neural coupling within three interrelated systems: cognitive, affective, and physical alignments.

Dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation links dark personalities to malevolent creative behavior.

Malevolent creativity refers to the ability to generate ideas that cause harm to oneself or others. While previous research has touched on how personality traits influence malevolent creative behavior, the neural mechanisms involved remain underexplored. This study investigated the brain patterns associated with malevolent creative behavior and how these patterns are mediated by dark personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) and positive traits (internalization, symbolization, and honesty-humility).

School Climate and School Identification as Determinants of Internet Gaming Disorder Among Chinese Adolescent Internet Gamers: Cross-Sectional Mediation Study.

Background: School climate and school identification are important features of the school environment and potential determinants of adolescent internet gaming disorder (IGD).

Objective: This novel study investigated their joint effects on IGD and related mediation mechanisms via the interpersonal factor of teacher-student relationship and the individual factors of academic stress and anxiety.

Methods: A large-scale cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescent internet gamers of junior, senior, and vocational middle schools in Taizhou City, China, from February to March 2022 (N=5778).

Association between interpersonal resources and mental health professional help-seeking among Chinese adolescents with probable depression: mediations via personal resources and active coping.

Background: Globally, adolescent depression is prevalent. There is, however, a dearth of studies investigating behavioral intention to professional help-seeking regarding mental health problems among adolescents having probable depression. Based on the Stress Coping Theory, the hypothesis that personal resources and active coping would mediate between interpersonal resources and behavioral intention to professional help-seeking was investigated.

University students who were men who had sex with men (MSM) in Sichuan, China had a higher prevalence of insomnia and probable depression than their non-MSM counterparts: mediation via emotional dysregulations.

Background: Men who have sex with men studying in universities (MSM-US) frequently face multiple sexual minority stressors that potentially lead to maladaptive emotional regulations and mental problems. This study compared the prevalence of depression/insomnia between MSM-US and non-MSM male university students (NUS) and hypothesized that the potential differences would be mediated via emotional dysregulation styles (rumination and catastrophizing).

Recent studies have revealed that hindlimb unloading (HU) animal models, which simulate space weightlessness, exhibited a disorder in memory and motor function associated with endogenous formaldehyde (FA) accumulation in the hippocampus and cerebellum, disruption of brain extracellular space (ECS), and blockage of interstitial fluid (ISF) drainage.

How Late Nights Influence Brain Cortical Structures: Distinct Neuroanatomical Measures Associated With Late Chronotype in Young Adults.

Chronotype is an inherent physiological trait reflecting an individual's subjective preference for their sleep awakening time, exerting a substantial influence on both physical and mental well-being. While existing research has established a close relationship between chronotype and individual brain structure, prior studies have predominantly focused on individual measurements of brain structural scales, thereby limiting the exploration of the underlying mechanisms of structural changes. This study seeks to validate previous research findings and enhance our understanding of the correlation between circadian rhythm preference and diverse cortical indicators in healthy young individuals.

Exogenous and endogenous formaldehyde-induced DNA damage in the aging brain: mechanisms and implications for brain diseases.

Exogenous gaseous formaldehyde (FA) is recognized as a significant indoor air pollutant due to its chemical reactivity and documented mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, particularly in its capacity to damage DNA and impact human health. Despite increasing attention on the adverse effects of exogenous FA on human health, the potential detrimental effects of endogenous FA in the brain have been largely neglected in current research. Endogenous FA have been observed to accumulate in the aging brain due to dysregulation in the expression and activity of enzymes involved in FA metabolism.

Understanding pathways from feeding difficulties of children to mental health risks of mothers at critical stages of childrearing: Does social support make a difference?

Background: Identifying the factors influencing mental health of mothers at critical stages of childrearing is significant for the implementation of effective promotion policies and counselling activities.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between children's feeding difficulties, marital quality, parenting quality and maternal mental health risks amidst Chinese mothers with high and low social support using a multi-group structural equation modelling approach.

Participants: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Wenzhou, China and a total of 772 mothers with children aged 0-3 were surveyed by using purposive sampling.

The longitudinal relationships between problematic mobile phone use symptoms and negative emotions: a cross-lagged panel network analysis.

Background: The association between problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) and negative emotions in university students is not well understood in terms of causality and directionality. This study aims to clarify whether negative emotions trigger PMPU or whether the PMPU itself leads to increased negative emotions over time.

Methods: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted involving 5568 Chinese freshmen who were surveyed at baseline and followed up after one academic year.

Relationship between horizontal collectivism and social network influence among college students: mediating effect of self-monitoring and moderating effect of self-efficacy.

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the intrinsic relationship between cultural values and social network index among college students. In addition, the present study explored the mediating role of self-monitoring in the relationship between horizontal collectivism cultural values and social network index, as well as the moderating role of self-efficacy, to provide a theoretical approach based on the intrinsic mechanism for college students to establish a good social network.

Methods: A simple random cluster sampling method was used to investigate 376 college students with cultural values scale, self-monitoring scale, self-efficacy scale, and social network index scale, structural equation model was constructed using M-plus and SPSS.

Exploring core symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome in alcohol use disorder patients: a network analysis approach.

Background: Understanding the interplay between psychopathology of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) in alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients may improve the effectiveness of relapse interventions for AUD. Network theory of mental disorders assumes that mental disorders persist not of a common functional disorder, but from a sustained feedback loop between symptoms, thereby explaining the persistence of AWS and the high relapse rate of AUD. The current study aims to establish a network of AWS, identify its core symptoms and find the bridges between the symptoms which are intervention target to relieve the AWS and break the self-maintaining cycle of AUD.

Investigating the effects of Ginkgo biloba leaf extract on cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease.

Aims: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with limited treatment options. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (GBE) on AD and explore its potential mechanisms of action.

Methods: Key chemical components of GBE, including quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol, were identified using network pharmacology methods.

Altered structural node of default mode network mediated general cognitive ability in young adults with obesity.

Background: Obesity, characterized by excessive adiposity, is associated with brain structural abnormalities. Nevertheless, the relationships between altered structural nodes of default mode network (DMN), body mass index (BMI), general cognitive ability remained unclear in young adults.

Methods: In this study, we divided a large sample of young adults into three BMI-based groups.

Sex-specific modulating role of social support in the associations between oxidative stress, inflammation, and telomere length in older adults.

Telomere length, a biomarker of human aging, is related to adverse health outcomes. Growing evidence indicates that oxidative stress and inflammation contributes to telomere shortening, whereas social support may protect from telomere shortening. Despite sex differences in telomere length and social support, little is known about whether there are sex differences in the relationship between oxidative stress/inflammation and telomere length, and sex-specific moderating roles of social support in older adults.

Background: This work elucidated the effect of honokiol (HKL) on hippocampal neuronal mitochondrial function in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: APP/PS1 mice were used as AD mice models and exposed to HKL and 3-TYP. Morris water maze experiment was performed to appraise cognitive performance of mice.

The effect of childhood family adversity on adulthood depression among Chinese older migrant workers: gender differences in the mediating role of social-ecological systems.

Background: Older migrant workers (OMWs) in China face unique challenges rooted in their early life experiences, which increase their vulnerability to psychological and behavioral problems in adulthood. By utilizing the cumulative disadvantage model and the social-ecological systems theory, this study explored the effect of childhood family adversity on adulthood depression in the mediating roles of OMWs' social-ecological microsystem and mesosystem and further examined gender differences in these associations.

Methods: Data were collected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), involving a sample of 4,309 OMWs aged 50 and above.

Background: Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) has a neuroprotective effect on neurodegenerative diseases. In the clinic, ALA can improve cognitive impairments in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. Animal studies have confirmed the anti-amyloidosis effect of ALA, but its underlying mechanism remains unclear.
