Comparison of Correction Techniques for the Spill in Effect in Emission Tomography.

IEEE Trans Radiat Plasma Med Sci

July 2020

Biomedical Imaging Science Department, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Leeds, UK; Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY.

In positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, accurate clinical assessment is often affected by the partial volume effect (PVE) leading to overestimation (spill-in) or underestimation (spill-out) of activity in various small regions. The spill-in correction, in particular, can be very challenging when the target region is close to a hot background region. Therefore, this study evaluates and compares the performance of various recently developed spill-in correction techniques, namely: background correction (BC), local projection (LP), and hybrid kernelized (HKEM) methods.

In the colon, long-term exposure to chronic inflammation drives colitis-associated colon cancer (CAC) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. While the causal and clinical links are well established, molecular understanding of how chronic inflammation leads to the development of colon cancer is lacking. Here we deconstruct the evolving microenvironment of CAC by measuring proteomic changes and extracellular matrix (ECM) organization over time in a mouse model of CAC.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune cells destroy their insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells leading to dysregulated glycaemia. Individuals with T1D control their blood glucose through exogenous insulin replacement therapy, often using multiple daily injections or pumps. However, failure to accurately mimic intrinsic glucose regulation results in glucose fluctuations and long-term complications impacting key organs such as the heart, kidneys, and/or the eyes.

Molecular Imaging?

J Nucl Med

October 2020

Werner Siemens Imaging Center, Department of Preclinical Imaging and Radiopharmacy, Eberhard Karls University, Tuebingen, Germany, and Cluster of Excellence iFIT (EXC 2180) "Image-Guided and Functionally Instructed Tumor Therapies, " University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany.

The important insights yielded by molecular imaging (MI) into relevant biologic signatures at an organ-specific and systemic level are not achievable with conventional imaging methods and thus provide an essential link between preclinical and clinical research. New diagnostic probes and imaging methods revealing comprehensive functional and molecular information are being provided by MI research, several of which have found their way into clinical application. However, there are also reservations about the impact of MI and its added value over conventional, often less expensive, diagnostic imaging methods.

Purpose: Androgen deprivation therapy is a standard therapy for some patients with localized and almost all patients with metastatic prostate cancer. Although several clinical cohort studies have identified an impact of androgen deprivation therapy on cognitive function, the previous reviews were not able to perform a well designed quantitative synthesis to summarize the risk of dementia and/or Alzheimer disease. Consequently there is still a lack of systematic review and meta-analysis regarding the impact of this risk including more recent studies.

Purpose Of Review: There is heightened awareness and trends towards centralizing high-risk, complex surgeries such as radical cystectomy to minimize complications and improve survival. However, after nearly a decade of mandated and/or passive centralization of care, debate regarding its benefits and harms continues.

Recent Findings: During the past decade, mandated and passive centralization has led to an increase in radical cystectomies performed in high-volume hospitals (HVHs) and, perhaps by high-volume surgeons (HVS), in addition to efforts to increase the uptake of multidisciplinary strategies in the management of radical cystectomy patients.
