Long Non-Coding RNAs in Diabetic Cardiomyopathy: Potential Function as Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets of Exercise Training.

J Cardiovasc Transl Res

January 2025

College of Sports, YanShan University, No.438, West Hebei Street, Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province, China.

Recent studies emphasize the beneficial effects of exercise on diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), adding to the growing body of evidence that underscores the role of exercise in improving health outcomes. Despite this, a notable gap persists in the number of healthcare providers who actively prescribe exercise as a therapeutic intervention for DCM management. In addition, exercise modulates the expression of lncRNAs, which play a pivotal role in DCM progression.

Background: Laparoscopic gastrectomy lacks hand-direct tactile sense and has a limited surgical field compared to laparotomy. Apart from textbook classification, there are anatomical variations in the gastric arteries. Laparoscopic gastrectomy presents technical difficulties and necessitates a more comprehensive comprehension of regional anatomy than open surgical procedures.

Department of neurology, Weihai Municipal Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Weihai 264200, Shandong, China.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, and the main clinical characteristics are bradykinesia and muscle stiffness. Cognitive impairment (CI) is a prevalent non-motor manifestation observed in individuals with PD. According to disease severity, it can be divided into PD with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and PD dementia.

Background: Recent phase III randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that first-line immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) improve prognosis in advanced HER-2-negative gastric cancer patients with programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) combined positive score (CPS) higher than 5. However, these findings are not confirmed in real-world settings, and the benefits in PD-L1 CPS < 5 patients remain controversial.

Methods: In this multicenter, retrospective cohort study, data from across thirteen medical centers were analyzed by inverse probability of treatment weighting for matching, alongside univariate and multivariate COX proportional hazard regression models.

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis, a severe condition causing many deaths worldwide, requires effective biomarkers for predicting its progression to septic shock, which current methods have struggled to provide.
  • Researchers developed a machine learning model named SepxFindeR using data from several transcriptomics datasets to better distinguish between sepsis and septic shock.
  • The model identified six key genes related to immune response, demonstrating high accuracy in predicting disease stages, and allows for effective patient identification using blood samples.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate if enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) improves overall survival and disease-free survival for patients undergoing laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer compared to conventional care.
  • 527 patients participated in the multicenter trial, which assessed outcomes like complications, recovery time, and medical expenses, with a follow-up of about 42 months.
  • Results showed that ERAS patients had a significantly higher 3-year overall survival (86.56%) and disease-free survival (79.57%), and experienced fewer complications and shorter hospital stays than those receiving conventional care.

Versatile roles for neutrophil proteinase 3 in hematopoiesis and inflammation.

Immunol Res

December 2024

Clinical Laboratory Center, Weihai Municipal Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Weihai, Shandong, 264200, PR China.

Neutrophil proteinase 3 (PR3), cathepsin G, elastase, and neutrophil serine protease 4 constitute the neutrophil serine protease family. These four members share varying sequence homology and functional similarities with each other. However, PR3 stands out as a unique autoantigen, serving as a primary autoantigen in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis.

Work Reward Moderates the Association Between Work Effect and Workplace Violence Among Medical Staff in China.

J Multidiscip Healthc

December 2024

Centre for Health Management and Policy Research, School of Public Health, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: Workplace violence (WPV) against healthcare workers is a significant public health issue in China and globally. Although the effort-reward imbalance theory claimed that work rewards may moderate the relationship between work effort and WPV, the quantitative evidence is limited. This study aimed to examine if work reward could moderate the associations between work effort and WPV against medical staff based on the effort-reward imbalance theory.

Despite the considerable progress in mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs)-based novel intervention of multiple sclerosis (MS), yet the disease-modifying effect of VCAM-1 MSCs and novel VCAM-1 counterpart is largely obscure. In this study, we took advantage of the EAE mouse model and VCAM-1 human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) for the evaluation of the therapeutic effect of systematic MSCs infusion. On the one hand, we compared the protective effect of VCAM-1 and VCAM-1 hUC-MSCs against the clinical symptoms, demyelination, active glia cells and neuroinflammation in EAE mice by conducting multifaceted detections upon spinal cord and brain tissues.

Background: Existing studies have shown that transferrin receptor (TfR) is highly expressed on the surface of lung cancer cells, and nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely used as delivery vehicles. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the targeted delivery of FeO NPs modified with transferrin (Tf) compared with photothermal treatment for lung cancer.

Methods: The morphology and properties of Fe3O4 NPs modified with Tf were tested by internal morphological characterization experiments including transmission electron microscopy, particle size meter infrared spectrometer and other experiments.

Accurate segmentation of the optic disk (OD) and optic cup (OC) regions of the optic nerve head is a critical step in glaucoma diagnosis. Existing architectures based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) still suffer from insufficient global information and poor generalization ability to small sample datasets. Besides, advanced transformer-based models, although capable of capturing global image features, perform poorly in medical image segmentation due to numerous parameters and insufficient local spatial information.

October 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Weihai Municipal Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Weihai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a reliable gastric cancer (GC) screening score system for urban residents and assess its effectiveness using data from two groups: a derivation cohort of 3,406 individuals and a validation cohort of 868.
  • Three distinct GC-risk scoring systems were developed, incorporating various risk factors like age, plateletocrit, and carcinoembryonic antigen, with different scoring ranges and optimal cut-off points for each system, demonstrating strong discrimination capabilities.
  • The results confirmed that the scoring systems significantly aid in identifying individuals at higher risk for GC, with the third scoring system showing the highest screening efficiency among urban residents.

Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the most common gynecologic malignancies with increasing morbidity. The prognosis for patients diagnosed with early-stage EC remains favorable; however, for patients with recurrent or metastatic EC, the prognosis is poor and treatment options, until recently, are limited. Antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) represent innovative strategies in cancer treatment; however, there are less investigations regarding their efficacy in EC.
