Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the death characteristics and burden of disease (BOD) in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients in Weifang from 2010 to 2021. The findings will serve as a foundational data source and theoretical framework for public health administrative departments in the formulation of DM-related policies.

Methods: The annual percent change (APC) and average annual percent change (AAPC) of the disability-adjusted life years (DALY), years of life lost (YLL), and years lived with disability (YLD) in DM residents from 2010 to 2021 were analyzed using the Joinpoint software to reflect the changing trend of the BOD in DM patients.

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, School of Basic Medicine Peking Union Medical College, 5 Dong Dan San Tiao, Dong Cheng District, Beijing, 100005, China, 8610-65233870.

Background: The core Healthy Days measures were used to track the population-level health status in the China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance; however, they were not easily combined to create a summary of the overall health-related quality of life (HRQOL), limiting this indicator's use.

Objective: This study aims to develop a summary score based on the Chinese version of the core Healthy Days measures (HRQOL-5) and apply it to estimate HRQOL and its determinants in a Chinese population.

Methods: From November 2018 to May 2019, a multistage stratified cluster survey was conducted to examine population health status and behavioral risk factors among the resident population older than 15 years in Weifang City, Shandong Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) and big data can enhance monitoring and warning systems for respiratory diseases like influenza and COVID-19, highlighting their potential to improve public health responses.
  • Analyzing data from 2020 to 2023, three methods (ADTM, MLSM, MLUM) were evaluated for issuing disease warnings, showing different levels of sensitivity and specificity in their results.
  • The findings suggest that while machine learning methods showed promise, particularly in sensitivity and timeliness of warnings, there is a need for further validation and integration of these models with various data sources to strengthen public health efforts.

Foodborne diseases have become a serious public health problem worldwide, and foodborne disease outbreaks have placed a heavy disease burden on China. Foodborne disease outbreaks occur most frequently among families in China. The objectives of this study were to analyze the cause of household foodborne disease outbreaks in China from 2010 to 2020 and to identify where preventive measures could be targeted.

Purpose: HIV-infected immunological non-responders (INRs) failed to achieve the normalization of CD4 T cell counts despite their undetectable viral load. INRs have an increased risk of clinical progressions of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and non-AIDS events, accompanied by higher mortality rates than immunological responders (IRs). This study aimed to discover the genes, which help to distinguish INRs from IRs and explore the possible mechanism of INRs.

The spatial-temporal distribution and etiological characteristics of hand-foot-and-mouth disease before and after EV‑A71 vaccination in Kunming, China, 2017-2020.

Sci Rep

October 2022

Department of Pathology, Kunming Children's Hospital, The Affiliated Children's Hospital of Kunming Medical University, Institute of Pediatric Disease Research in Yunnan, Kunming, 650228, People's Republic of China.

After vaccination with enterovirus 71 (EV-A71), the prevalence of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) remained high, and the spatial-temporal distribution of enteroviruses changed. Therefore, it is essential to define the temporal features, spatial distributions, and epidemiological and etiological characteristics of HFMD in Kunming. Between 2017 and 2020, a total of 36,540 children were diagnosed with HFMD in Kunming, including 32,754 children with enterovirus-positive clinical samples.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, The Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, 16 Jiangsu Road, Qingdao, China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Previous research has found that patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) have an increased risk of thrombosis, such as venous thromboembolism (VT), ischemic stroke (IS)/transient ischemic attack (TIA), and cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the risk factors for stroke in patients with ITP have yet to be determined. This study aims to determine the risk factors and characteristics of ischemic stroke in patients with ITP.

Materials And Methods: This study included adults with incident primary ITP diagnosed in a tertiary medical center between 2010 and 2020.

What Is Already Known About This Topic?: Pneumococcal diseases (PDs) pose a serious health threat to children. Vaccination is the most cost-effective intervention to prevent PDs, but pneumococcal vaccines coverage among children is low in China.

What Is Added By This Report?: This study investigated the willingness of children's caregivers to have their children vaccinated with pneumococcal vaccines under an innovative policy to offer 1-dose of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines at no charge to families.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity and the risk of airflow obstruction, based on the data from the 2007-2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES). Logistic regression was applied to assess the relationships between BMI or abdominal obesity and the risk of airflow obstruction by the fixed ratio method and the lower limit of normal (LLN) method. We further used the restricted cubic splines with 3 knots located at the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentiles of the distribution to evaluate the dose-response relationship.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common risk factor for the occurrence of cervical cancer (CC). In recent years, the important roles of long non‑coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in CC have emerged, but studies on the relationship between lncRNAs and HPV‑positive (HPV+) CC remain scarce. The present study aimed to investigate whether lncRNA deleted in lymphocytic leukemia 1 (DLEU1) is associated with HPV infection and explore the clinical significance of DLEU1 in HPV+ patients with CC.

October 2020

Immunology Innovation Team, School of Medicine, Ningbo University, Ningbo, 315211, China.

To investigate the evolutionary and epidemiological dynamics of the current COVID-19 outbreak, a total of 112 genomes of SARS-CoV-2 strains sampled from China and 12 other countries with sampling dates between 24 December 2019 and 9 February 2020 were analyzed. We performed phylogenetic, split network, likelihood-mapping, model comparison, and phylodynamic analyses of the genomes. Based on Bayesian time-scaled phylogenetic analysis with the best-fitting combination models, we estimated the time to the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) and evolutionary rate of SARS-CoV-2 to be 12 November 2019 (95 % BCI: 11 October 2019 and 09 December 2019) and 9.

To investigate the evolutionary history of the recent outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in China, a total of 70 genomes of virus strains from China and elsewhere with sampling dates between 24 December 2019 and 3 February 2020 were analyzed. To explore the potential intermediate animal host of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we reanalyzed virome data sets from pangolins and representative SARS-related coronaviruses isolates from bats, with particular attention paid to the spike glycoprotein gene. We performed phylogenetic, split network, transmission network, likelihood-mapping, and comparative analyses of the genomes.
