Background: The UK Health and Safety Executive's Stress Management Competency Framework and associated questionnaire, the Stress Management Competency Indicator Tool (SMCIT), address line managers' behaviours across four competency areas. The application in policing remains unexplored.
Aims: This study profiled English police officers' perception of their line managers' competencies in the framework areas.

A three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network based on a rare topology has been constructed using an organic molecule synthesized in the solid state. The molecule is obtained using a supramolecular protecting-group strategy that is applied to a solid-state [2+2] photodimerization. The photodimerization affords a novel head-to-head cyclo-butane product.

The Job Demand-Control-Support (JDC-S) and Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI) models dominate psychosocial work environment research and practice, with their independent and collective contributions to employee health having been extensively demonstrated. Psychosocial risk assessment in the humanitarian aid sector is in its infancy, and there is a need to identify appropriate psychosocial work environment models to inform approaches to assessment. The aim of this study is to examine the efficacy of these models separately and in combination to identify psychological distress in humanitarian aid workers.

Measuring changes in activity and sleep over time is important for research and practice. While commercially available home monitoring systems passively track these parameters, the feasibility, acceptability, and usefulness of new products need to be evaluated. We tested a commercially available system for providing long-term data on activity and sleep with 10 single women (mean age, 86.

Most of the world's areca nut users reside in south and southeast Asia, but research is scarce. We examine areca nut use among Dai, a Chinese ethnic minority, and its implications. The history, common knowledge, traditional medical applications, social functions, and changing epidemiology of areca nut use are reviewed.

With the growing worldwide refugee crisis, there is a need for evidence-based interventions that specifically deal with the consequences of cumulative trauma-exposure in refugee youth. Refugee children have unique service needs and differ from their non-refugee peers in terms of sociocultural trauma, language, culture, and educational barriers. This article explains the complexities associated with understanding refugee youth and presents a proposal for studying the possible benefits of Tree of Life therapy.

Single-item measures of global job stressfulness are increasingly used in occupational health research, yet their construct validity remains unexplored. This study used a qualitative approach to identify frames of reference that underlie self-ratings on such a measure. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 55 adults in full-time employment who completed a single-item measure inviting a rating of the extent to which their job is generally stressful.

The formation and photoreactivity of a series of mixed co-crystals containing 4-stilbazole along with both 4,6-dichlororesorcinol and 4,6-dibromoresorcinol at various ratios is reported. In all cases, the quantitative [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction yields an identical head-to-tail photoproduct, namely rctt-1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)-2,4-bis(phenyl)cyclobutane. The selectivity in the cycloaddition reaction occurred due to a shorter distance observed between two carbon-carbon double bonds that were found between and not within the hydrogen-bonded assemblies.

Background: Oxidative stress occurs when imbalances exist between the production of oxygen free radicals and endogenous antioxidants that neutralize their harmful effects, causing irreversible tissue damage. Oxygen free radicals readily interact with DNA, proteins, and lipids, instigating conformational changes to cellular structures and leading to derangement and dysfunction. Oxidative stress is a key feature in the pathology of COPD.

We investigate a previously unobserved phase transition in an organic co-crystal containing the olefin trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene. The olefin undergoes molecular motion in the crystalline state, and converts from a disordered to ordered phase upon cooling. Ordering causes a unit cell change to occur via a reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation.

Cancer centers have adopted a holistic approach to cancer treatment to better meet the psychosocial needs of cancer survivors. However, the current number of psychosocial providers in oncology is inadequate to meet the growing demand and psychosocial providers may face barriers in accessing oncology-specific training. The current study aims to explore the career development of psychologists working in oncology to inform training and workplace supports, as well as to inform training for health psychologists interested in other sub-specialties.

Metagenomic sequencing of bacterial samples has become the gold standard for profiling microbial populations, but 16S rRNA profiling remains widely used due to advantages in sample throughput, cost, and sensitivity even though the approach is hampered by primer bias and lack of specificity. We hypothesized that a hybrid approach, that combined targeted PCR amplification with high-throughput sequencing of multiple regions of the genome, would capture many of the advantages of both approaches. We developed a method that identifies and quantifies members of bacterial communities through simultaneous analysis of multiple variable regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene.

In this editorial I introduce the possible as an emerging field of inquiry in psychology and related disciplines. Over the past decades, significant advances have been made in connected areas - counterfactual thinking, anticipation, prospection, imagination and creativity, etc. - and several calls have been formulated in the social sciences to study human beings and societies as systems that are open to possibility and to the future.

This study aimed to explore the phenomenon of suffering as viewed from the humanbecoming paradigm. The Parse research method was used for this study and answers the question: What is the structure of the living experience of suffering? The participants were 10 individuals who experienced one of the most dreadful typhoons in the archipelago of the Philippines. The central finding of the study was as follows: Suffering is penetrating disheartenment amid resoluteness, as pondering with diverse alliances surfaces with lingering glimmers of destruction.

How does the current replication crisis, along with other recent psychological trends, affect scientific creativity? To answer this question, we consider current debates regarding replication through the lenses of creativity research and theory. Both scientific work and creativity require striking a balance between ideation and implementation and between freedom and constraints. However, current debates about replication and some of the emerging guidelines stemming from them threaten this balance and run the risk of stifling innovation.

This study sought to examine stress-related working conditions-defined in terms of effort-reward imbalance (ERI)-and their association with burnout among a large, international sample of humanitarian aid workers. Descriptive statistics were applied to cross-sectional survey data (N=1,980) to profile ERI and burnout and Pearson's χ tests were used to characterise associated socio- and occupational-demographic factors. Associations between ERI and burnout were established using binary logistic regression to generate odds ratios and 95 per cent confidence intervals adjusted for potential confounding variables.

There is a paucity of research on the subjective stress-related experiences of humanitarian aid workers. Most evaluations of stress among these individuals focus on trauma and related conditions or adopt a quantitative approach. This interview-based study explored how 58 humanitarian aid workers employed by a United Nations-aligned organisation perceived the transactional stress process.

People may express a variety of emotions after committing a transgression. Through 6 empirical studies and a meta-analysis, we investigate how the perceived authenticity of such emotional displays and resulting levels of trust are shaped by the transgressor's power. Past findings suggest that individuals with power tend to be more authentic because they have more freedom to act on the basis of their own personal inclinations.
