Understanding Catalyst 'Volcano' Dependence Through Fermi-Level Controlled Kinetics Using Electronic Theory.

Entropy (Basel)

November 2024

Catalysis and Transient Kinetics Group, Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho Falls, ID 83415, USA.

The ubiquitous two-step Michaelis-Menten and Temkin-Boudart reaction mechanisms are extended to include the influence of the catalyst electronic subsystem in a 5-step mechanism. The resulting kinetic equation provides an alternative explanation for the well-known volcano-shaped dependence found in catalysis. The equilibrium constants of fast electronic steps are highlighted for their influence on adsorption and desorption through the relative concentration of charged versus neutral intermediates.

The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who implement a CRE within an established iREC and to explore how this identity contributes to the success of these programs.

Centre for Organizational Health and Development, Division of Psychiatry and Applied Psychology, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Belonging and identity are fundamental human needs, with positive experiences closely correlated with affirmative mental health. This paper investigates how these concepts are experienced by Muslim women in Switzerland, a minority group targeted in the political campaign nicknamed the "burka ban." There were two research questions: How do Muslim women construct their identity in Switzerland? How do Muslim women experience a sense of belonging in Switzerland? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants, and data was analyzed using thematic analysis.

Saint Louis University, Department of Physics 3511 Laclede Avenue St Louis MO 63103 USA

The chirality selective production of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) continues to represent one of the most important technological challenges. In this study, an extended model which considers all steps of the SWCNT growth process, including adsorption, decomposition, diffusion, and incorporation, is applied, for the first time, to obtain chirality selection in the SWCNT populations. We show that the dependence of the population distribution on chirality, defined as a product of the nucleation probability and the growth rate, has a volcano-shape.

Over the past few years, there has been increased visibility of, and attention paid to, enduring issues such as racial discrimination toward Black Americans. Black psychologists have been called upon to explain various race-related mental health issues to the public, as well as their colleagues and students. Discussions about how to heal from persistent, intergenerational, oppressive attacks on the African psyche are important, but the theories and treatments in which most practitioners are trained and considered "best practices" are Eurocentric in nature.

Can civic-minded individuals fight against a pandemic? In this paper, we show that civic capital plays an important role when assessing the level of compliance with COVID-19 vaccination recommendations. Analyzing data on a large sample of municipalities from the Italian region of Lombardy, we show that the share of vaccinated individuals is significantly higher in municipalities with higher pre-determined levels of civic capital. These findings are robust to the possibility of spatial spillovers across neighboring municipalities.
